I need to put a hitch on the 2000 XLT. I'm just gonna go with a class II so I can haul a small trailer for my sportbike. Any suggestions on a good one? What about the wiring for lights? Is there a factory plug like on a p/u truck that an adapter can go into?

Gotta love the tube style hitches (hidden hitch, Drawtite, etc..)

Get a class 3 hitch. Class 2 are pretty flimsy. You can buy a class 3 at Walmart for $100 and install it yourself. It's pretty easy. Just remove the spare tire first. That makes it easier.

I would go with the class III hitch as well. You'll have much easier time and a wider selection with finding accessories for your 2" receiver than for a 1 1/4".
However, don't overestimate your towing capabilities . I have a 2003 Explorer with the V8 and still can only tow 1,903 lbs safely. For details on how I came up with that number look at this web page (http://niesens.com/hobbies/cars/2003-ford-explorer/ball-mount.en.html) that I'm currently working on. It's actually a discussion about the ball mount for the standard class II hitch for the 2003 Explorer but I got off topic and included a little about the towing ratings.

My expections of what the Ex can tow aren't high for sure. One difference that caught my eye in class II and III are the max tongue weights. The class II is rated pretty low there.

If your going to get a class 11 you may as well use your stock bumper.

300lbs is low? Besides most of the weight should be carried by the trailer not the tongue.

Also remember that you want to have the trailer level with the ground. So depending on the tow vehicle you may need a ball mount with a drop or lift. My guess is that the stock bumper is to high for small trailers (and large ones just rip your bumper right out ;) )
