View Full Version : Gas Mileage JackStraw_1969 02-26-2004, 04:36 PM Just filled up today for the 2st time since the Dealer topped it off when I bought it. 20gal and 250 miles = 12.5 MPG......does that sound about right for gettin' around town in a '97 5.0? double_take 02-26-2004, 04:41 PM That is what I was getting on my '00 V8. Since I changed the Oil and put in a K&N air filter on Sat I have been getting 14.5MPG JackStraw_1969 02-26-2004, 04:47 PM Changed the oil on Sat......prolly get a K&N.....need to flush the rad as well......I was figuring 12-15 depending on my lead-foot! :D splodo49 03-04-2004, 11:29 AM i get about 11 mpg on a 94 with stock 3.73s and 34's. I fill up so much its really ridiculous.Any one got some 4.56s for a poor navy man? sk1er17 03-04-2004, 11:37 AM i get 12-13 on a 98 SOHC sport w/4.10's and 32's. -K&N -Flowmaster -New plugs/wires Ill get towards 14mpg on ski trips because im not stopping and going. X~FACTOR 03-04-2004, 11:56 AM I always get 2-3 less mpg during winter. I normally get 15-16 mpg during the warm summer days and 12-13 during the winter. Although my tires are an inch taller than stock so those numbers should really be a tad bit higher. RiverRat 03-04-2004, 01:00 PM We're a 4 V8 Family! 97 Explorer XLT AWD 5.0 V8 98 Corvette Coupe LS1 5.7 V8 00 Grand Marquis 4.6 V8 (Wifes Car) '79 IMP Aztec Deep V OMC 260 (350 chevy) V8  Sounds about right for a 5.0 in the city. hsinc 03-04-2004, 01:55 PM On my 99 AWD Mounty, V8, I've tracked my mileage over the past 6 tanks, 1653 miles, and average is 15.83. This is mostly my commute mileage, 60 miles/day, about 60% highway, some stop and go. This is north Atlanta suburbs. Then had a 690 mile trip this weekend I averaged 18.0 mpg, running 74 - 75, about 2500 rpm on tach, Kennesaw to Mobile, Al and back. I drive fairly easy, but get on it if traffic merges require. I'm hoping to improve both my commute mileage and my highway mileage. Just put in the Apten chip last night. I'll be tracking to see if it helps any. Harold JackStraw_1969 03-08-2004, 03:24 PM Just an update, The 2nd tank, with fresh oil, and a radiator flush (man was it nasty) and absolutely ZERO WOT take-offs, I filled up today .....17.2 gal and I went 261 miles on that so.......15.1MPG........not bad, not bad at all. No WOT starts and trying to keep it under 2K all the time...... spta97 03-15-2004, 10:18 AM My mileage goes from about 10 - 15 at best. 15 is only with no WOTS, no stops, and a strong tail wind  Since I installed my autostart it is worse. I got 60 miles on the first 1/2 tank ! I took it to the dealer and they found nothing wrong. I've was told to replace the plugs and wires but that is pretty expensive considering they are supposed to be good for 100K (or is it 60K?). snocross1985 03-15-2004, 10:28 AM On my 1994 I get about 18 mpg with stock tires and 3.27 gearing. A year ago I was getting about 15 mpg. Since then I have added exhaust and intake. (On my quest for 25 mpg!) Tristan 03-15-2004, 01:06 PM I just got 22 on hwy driving this morning. Kept cruise on 65mph. I just had ravin exhaust system put on, and am still evaluating. I need to do plug/wires and pcv along with a KKM filter, all of which I hope will improve the mileage. 00XLS 03-15-2004, 02:38 PM I got about 18mpg on the way up to canada with about 60% highway and the rest "city" not interstate anyway. I usually turn about 2900 rpms at 75-80 mph. Jimbo 03-15-2004, 04:15 PM 91 explorer 12.435 today but 2 weeks ago... 9.5 (WTF!) spta97 03-16-2004, 02:19 PM Originally posted by Tristan I just got 22 on hwy driving this morning. I know you didn't do that on a V8 5.0 unless you shut the engine off. Tristan 03-16-2004, 02:21 PM Haa!!!! No, just a v6....I'm hoping I can increase that to 25....we'll see. Hoffer 03-16-2004, 02:48 PM In my 2000 Explorer with V6, I had the little information display that showed MPG and such. It was always in the high 15 MPG area. I never reset the thing. So, that was over a couple year period. I've had my 2004 Explorer with the V8 now for 2 weeks. That thing is in the low 12 MPG around town. I am a little heavy with the acceleration, but I was still hoping something better than that. I took a 600 mile round trip to my parents over the weekend. I was hoping to get around 17-18 MPG on the highway, but only got around 15. :( Can I expect better gas mileage after a breakin point for the engine? After my big trip, it now has just over 1,000 miles on the odometer. It had 35 miles on it when I took delivery. :) Tristan 03-16-2004, 02:56 PM I've always heard that the mileage would improve after the break in period, but since I'm mechanically challenged...I couldn't prove it. ronnie mullins 03-16-2004, 03:05 PM My 94 got 19.5,my 96 gets 18 mostly around town with little hwy Blrob5 03-16-2004, 04:40 PM I just changed the plugs, wires, and pcv valve in my 91, at about half tank. So far, i'v gotten almost 200 miles out of it from full, but it's just about on E. Also ran Seafoam thru the intake, oil and gas. I'm going to fill up later and see what the next tank gets me. Also will change the fuel filter as well, even though ford claims the original filter should last for the life of the truck. The Ex has 137,000 miles on it now. Any suggestions to help improve gas milage would be greatly appreciated. 2NRFIXR 03-16-2004, 05:56 PM On My 5.0 AWD I have 17.4 mpg right now according to my message center; that's with a K&N filter, mostly highway, and a light foot. Electrohacker 03-17-2004, 12:37 AM I ogt a 5.0 AWD '96 and I get 17 mpg city with a heavy lead foot and 20+ highway... and yes it is a 5.0 I ain't no newb... Electrohacker 03-17-2004, 12:39 AM oh yeah... that's with 132,000 + miles mostly highway and really good upkeep... and pure stock wa4kc 03-18-2004, 12:54 AM My truck is a stock 99 EB V6 4x4. I get about 19 around town and about 23 on the highway. Around town a tank will get me about 350 miles and on the highway I get around 425. I have no idea how big my tank is but the message center normally says 19 to 20 average. Also, I have 75K and all original parts except tires and fluids. I have ran synthetic fluids in engine, trans, and diffs since it was bought. I tried higher octane gas for a while but my millage and performance went down so I stick to 87 octane. RFR2212 03-18-2004, 01:06 AM I got a 94 w/ the v-6 at 140k. I get 8 around town 12 on the road. Gotta love no power, 33's 4.10s and lockers... If you stay outta the gas on the 5.0 milage isn't horrible considering what it is. spta97 03-22-2004, 09:00 AM Originally posted by Electrohacker I ogt a 5.0 AWD '96 and I get 17 mpg city with a heavy lead foot and 20+ highway... and yes it is a 5.0 I ain't no newb... I find this hard to believe. How are you calculating your mileage? I don't go by the gauge but do it this way: - Fill up - Drive - Fill up again - Divide my miles driven by gallons put in on 2nd fill up On my last one it was: 222 miles / 17 gallons = 13.05 MPG Is this the way you are doing it or are you going by a message center or something? I think 20+ on the highway on a 5.0 V8 AWD is impossible  How many miles do you get on the tank??? I was very happy to get that as I usually only get about 10 - 11. The 13 MPG was because I did a lot of highway driving. I've tried just about everything (no WOTS, no RPMs over 2.5K, took to the dealer) but nothing is helping. I don't want to do my plugs and wires because it's only got 30K on the ODO and it seems like a lot of money to spend for a parts that shouldn't need replacing. I'm gonna try my fuel filter, tranny flush, radiator flush and thermostat, and perhaps some seafoam. My hopes aren't high though :( Electrohacker 03-22-2004, 10:20 AM yeah I manually calculate the milage... I get about 360+ per tank (but that usually includes some city) the 20+ was the result of a complex equation I did once to rip the city miles out of my pure hiway milage.... (I wrote down the miles for highway and city and used 17.5 for city and extracted the resulting data) ATX_TrunkPunk 03-23-2004, 01:31 AM yeah, on my 91 sport 5 spd i got 16 mpg on the last fill up. That whole tank was ALL IN TOWN DRIVING! I don't understand it, and i was also lead foot a lot of time and plenty of WOT starts. Here's my specs... -165k miles -Just put in Autolite Double Plat. plugs and BW 8mm wires -Ifab intake -cleaned MAF -Aluminum performance radiator -Usually shift around 3k rpm, unless racing:D -Pennzoil Dino oil 10w30 -Stock everything else Yeah, i dont get it. And then before ive driven like a grandma and gotten like 14 mpg. Hopefully my new cold air induction will help out with this too. FoxFan 03-23-2004, 07:53 AM i've got a '95 LTD w/ 3.73's and 235/75/15's. she gets 20-22mpg on the freeway at 65-69mph the best at 65. if you break 70 than it dives to 17 and worse from there the faster you go. can't remember the rpm's, but that is the key. nospeed_!2 03-23-2004, 11:44 AM My stock 95 xlt v6 got around 14 untill i changed the oil. now i get in the high 19's while drving on the hwy at about 80 mph. doesnt make much sence but im not complaining. I got 340 mi. on my last tank absentdreamerr 06-08-2004, 04:11 AM I useually get around 16.3 doing my daily 62.5 mile commute of which about 18 is city. Is it just me or do these fuel economy numbers not make sense? Not MINE, but everyones. BigR 06-08-2004, 07:57 AM OK, here's my gas mileage skinny........ Been inspired by Aldive...... 1998 Sport 4.0L, 5 speed 3.78 LSD. 109K miles..... 6 year average, mix driving, normal foot: 20 MPG. Some less, some more but 20 average. Updates in the last 60 days.......... - Bosch +2 plugs - New Autolite wires - remove roof rack cross bars - cleaned MAF - swiss cheese air box - normal 10w40 oil - windows up, A/C on - careful driving, grandma style, slow starts, 60-65 mph in hwy Net: 23.5 MPG over about 10 tanks. Left to try ($$$ items)....... - synthetic oil (doubtful it's worth it: extra cost versus gas savings) - synthetic diffy fluid - K&N or KKM - chip My fuel costs at 23.5 mpg and $2.00 per gallon are 8.51 cents/mile If I improve 1 MPG then I save 0.35 cents per mile or $3.50 every 1000 miles. So, I've gotten the cheap and easy improvements. Have to decide whether to spend the money on the more expensive ones........ Randy aldive 06-08-2004, 08:02 AM Left to try ($$$ items)....... - synthetic oil (doubtful it's worth it: extra cost versus gas savings) - synthetic diffy fluid - K&N or KKM - chip Synthetic fluids are definately worth' be sure to do motor oil, tranny, and rear end. The KKM I use is definately worth having. If you have Apten custom burn an economy chip for you, it is definately worth it. Looks like you are well on the way to 30. Goos luck..... VBVA 06-08-2004, 08:42 AM 93 XL No Front Valence No Plastic "Side Boards" K & N 3.27's 30" BFG AT/KO's 10 MPG around Harrisonburg 15 MPG around Virginia Beach 18-19 MPG highway at 70 MPH and 2100-2300 RPM I only plan on keeping the Ex for less than 20 months, so I might give it new plugs and wires, but that would be my only change... BrianB31 06-11-2004, 11:37 PM On my Ranger with a '99 Explorer 302 bored to 306, custom cam and GT-40X heads I get 18 in the city and 22 on long trips. I'm very consistant and the last two fills ups were 330 miles on 18 gallons this week and 300 on 16.5 gallons last week. Even with my increased power I have alot less weight than you guys and that's where I get it. Jonger1150 06-12-2004, 01:04 AM I have a 2001 Sport 2wheel Drive. It gets 22 MPG no matter what speed I drive. 03ExplorerSPT 06-12-2004, 01:06 AM Wow Jonger that is great!! jayhawkexplorer 06-12-2004, 02:16 AM I'm getting around 18 per gallon with about 75% highway miles at 65-70 MPH with the A/C running - its hot as hell here :) I'm happy with that, considering 19 is the rated mileage. MartyD 06-12-2004, 12:30 PM I know it's not a V-8, but since i installed a K&N FIPK on my 4.0 OHV 4x4 I have increased my milage by approx. 2.5 mpg, city and highway. This holds true even at Interstate speeds, and I have a HEAVY foot...lol. 00XLS 06-12-2004, 02:13 PM I've been getting about 16-17 wiht my 4.0 OHV, I get around 300 before I fill up and theres usually about 1-2 gals in there cuz it only takes about 18 to 19 gal to fill it up. |
