Hi

Today I have been advised by my local Ford dealer that I need a new 4WD shift motor for my 1998 Explorer. I took it to the dealer because I was experiencing a loud clunking noise from both front wheels during slow left and right hand turns, such as parking in a parking spot in a carpark.

The dealer told m,e that the vwehicle was in 4WD mode although the switch on the dash showed normal range.

The price quoted to replace the motor was $750.00 plus 2 hours labour at $80.00 per hour.

This quote is ridiculous and I am hoping someone can advise me if I can replace the motor with something else or repair the motor myself. Maybe I can remove the motor myself and take it somewhere to be repaired.

Any ideas please

How long do you think it was in 4wd? DId they say anything about damage for being in 4wd? You can check the shift motor at fordpartsnetwork.com for a price.

Check the transfer case fluid level. It is probably very low. This is a wet clutch and when it gets dry it grabs. The 4WD motor has absolutely nothing to do with this problem and is just a dealer billup. Your rear seal is probably leaking.
