I have warn free wheeling hubs on my 92 ex. When I lock them in the one on the drivers side grinds and does not spin when it receives traction. I think it comes from the past winter when I was pulling someone out and that wheel hit dry payment and I heard a bang. I wonder if it is as simple as just the hub broken or can it be a axle. How do you check. If it was the axle will it just fall out.

Sounds like you busted a hub. The only way to tell if it's the hub or axle is to pull off the hub. You can look in the beam and see it the u-joint is intact. When I broke a hub it 'popped' and I had a grinding noise afterwards. If it was the hub then you can send it back to Warn and get a new one.
