View Full Version : Stitching on those oh so cushy leather seats.

Well the stitching is starting to come apart in one particular section of the seat on both the drivers and passengers side. I wonder if anybody has a method to fix this? Can you pull the covers off to get to the back side to stitch it back up? Or is this something that is best left to a professional?

I would have a professional re-upholster the seat, shouldn't cost too much.

The covers DO come off but I dont know how easy it would be to re-stitch.

I called Ford here in town and the cost of buying a brand new leather cover just like the factory one is 300 each. That is 300 bottom and 300 for the top sections. Not bad since mainly the bottoms wear out. But I was also told that if I didn't know what I was doing when it came time to put it back on, leave it to a professional cause of all the spray on glue and stuff. It has to be done right or it's a waste of money.

If it's just the stitching and not a tear in the leather, take it to an auto upholsterer. You probably don't have to replace the whole cover. I had a stitching separation on the driver's side in the crease just down from the outside of my left leg. Upholstery shop restitched it for $65.

There is a plastic piece holding the front of the leather seat down, pull that down to release the front of the seat. Fold the front of the leather up until you come to the part that the stiching is coming apart. I used dental floss as a thread because it is much stronger and will last longer then ussual thead. A common method use to sew seal, beaver or moose hides here in my part of Alaska. Now sew the part of the seat that is seperating back together strating about 1/2" to an 1" away from where the stiching is coming apart. I had to do this on my seats about a year ago and they have held together very well every since then.

$300's not bad at all. Give Torrie at Ford Parts Network a ring and see if he can do better, he usually can.

There ant a chance in hell im paying $300 for new seat covers! :nono:
I'll just pull them off and re-stitch them like anothergoatherd explained.
Thankyou by the way i'll try the dental floss too.
