View Full Version : New England Chapter

ok guys, weve been talking about it, and i think it should be done.

We need to start our own chapter for us new england guys and gals....

Ive been sending e-mails around attempting to join either ECX, or XtremeXplorers, or whatver its called now for a while, and have gotten few and far between replies. The replies either were that they didnt know who was in charge, or that it was disbanded, or whatever. And since most of us new englanders arent going to be driving 5 1/2 hours down to PA, or 4 hours to NJ for a day of wheeling (been there, done that, not fun), basically a membership in one of these clubs would be nothing more than a sticker on our trucks. Basicaly, the group of us that go wheeling now would be a seperate entity of the larger club in the south anyways. And since i think the name XtreamXplorers sucks, we need to start our own club. Period.

now, i have come up with a couple of different potential names for this club.

NEX (new england xplorers)
SMOR (soccer mom off road)
GGOR (grocery getter off road)
ECXwastaken (self explanitory)

or i like a spin off of a already assembiled club (baystate jeepers) that wont let us in.

Baystate Explorers.

im sure you all have much better ideas.

oh, and since i have organized the only explorer runs in new england in recorded history (/end gloating) i am nominating myslef as president. i will pay to run a website, or if anyone can explain to me like the complete retard that i am how to host it off my own computer, i would do that aswell. i will also handle admissions into the club, and do the most important part, get stickers.

whatta ya all think?

I second the club, but I feel that Bay State Explorers, while catchy, wouldn't be accurate since I'm not a Mass resident at least not permanently (don't plan to be either), Matt isn't, nor is Thunderterd, who we need to get ahold of because his buddy owns a couple hundred acres or so in Enfield, NH (near Claremont, Lebanon, Hanover, etc) that he commonly wheels on and needs to be more completely exploited. :) It would also be a good idea to see if the folks from CT want into our club as well. I wouldn't want to exlude them, but it almost seems that they either roll on their own or possibly with the NY/NJ/PA crowd. If they want in both, I say more power to them, but they should fulfill all responsibilities associated with each club.

Unfortunately I don't have time to sit and brainstorm more names, but let's keep the suggestions coming! :)

Right now I don't do either since I don't trust going out of state with my truck, even though my tranny has been behaving, I have a leak in my power steering lines and have to put fluid in it at least once a day(depends on how much driving I do), or I won't be able to steer the truck. I have to find out what the price for new lines are and get the guy at my job to fix it. But that's getting a bit off the subject. I would imagine that southern Connecticut members would rather go to NY, NJ or PA since it's closer to them. Living in Central Connecticut as I do, I have a choice which to go to, and since I'd prefer to go wheeling with my fellow New Englanders, count me in.

New England Explorers sounds like a great name for the club. I don't have any other names on my mind, but I'll post if I think of any.

I nominate Fred as the club president, since he's done a kick-ass job of planning runs for us(even though i haven't been able to attend one yet(You all remember what happened to me when I did try to get to the first run), and due to things that are happening at home right now(My older daughter is having breathing problems and the x-rays aren't showing up anything...I'm extremely worried about her), I'm not going to be able to attend the Vermont camping & wheeling trip either. :banghead:

I'm seriously wondering if someone is trying to tell me something, if all the plans I've made to come up there and meet you guys, have derailed for one reason or another.

But I remain optimistic that I will finally get to hook up with you guys.

Fred, if you need any help with your website, I'll help in the best way I know how.

Happy wheeling y'all,

This sounds sweet. Unfortunatly I have had similar issues with not being able to make any of the runs. Between a summer class, work and health issues with those close to me it has not ben possible for me to make it. I would be very interested in joining, though. As I hope to make it to some runs in the future.

OK, I'll chime in as the lurker n00b. ;) As far as a name is concerned, NEX makes sense because it follows the same style naming convention as ECX. I agree with izackary that Bay State Explorers may not work because not everyone is from the Bay State.

If you need Web space for a basic club Web site, I have a dedicated server sitting on a 10 Mbps pipe with 1 TB of bandwidth per month. I could set you guys up with a Content Management Server (CMS) like Mambo (http://www.mamboserver.com/) so no HTML ever needs to be written. All Web site updates and image uploads are done through a Web interface. I can also handle DNS.

As far as the sticker comment, all clubs need stickers! :D KC from www.rallydecals.com is one of my sponsors, and I'm sure he'd do a deal on club decals. He does all the decal work for Trunkmonkey Racing (http://www.trunkmonkeyracing.com/) and the New England Subaru Impreza Club (http://www.clutchdrop.com/).

But yeah, I'm definitely up for a local chapter so I can start getting my X dirty. Or, for some of the more technical runs, parking the X and going for a ride with some of you guys with lifts. :D

Trunkmonkey - 30 posts and already elite? YOU DA MAN!

I really like NEX - New England eXplorers, even though my truck says "Mountaineer" on the seats - it still says "Ford" on everything else :)

I have plenty of website experiance, and would be more than happy to work on it, possibly host it.

Sandy, I hope things start looking up for you and your family - you'll be able to hang out with us in no time. If not, we can just drive down to CT.

Well NEX Sounds good to me. I was an ECX member but had not heard from anyone in ages. So who is going to head up the club? Are we gonna have Chapter/State Representives in charge of their states?

FourXFred
08-09-2004, 09:21 AM
well, we can have a florida style election to decide who will head this club up. i have family in dade county and they said that during the last presidential elections the "chad" system worked well...

or, to take a quote from the movie starship troopers:

"ill do it untill i die, or they find someone better."

i can get stickers no problem, either through this guy i know, or through trunkmonkey's sponsor. ill check out both of them and see which one would be cheaper. as far as a website goes, i probally shouldent have offered to do it, because i know less than nothing about website setup and design and whatever else goes on. i could setup a stupid one with yahoo or whatever for a temporary thing, but we'll probally want something a little bit better for permanent usage.

as far as different states having different leaders and whatnot, i dont really care. it doesnt seem to me that this needs to be anywhere that complicated for the time being, since there is only like 15 of us. just a group of people, with someone to buy stickers and organize runs, and pay for a website, sounds good enough to me.

oh, and i also like NEX for a name.

i just setup a website over at geocities. the registered domain name is www.newenglandxplorers.com. itll be running soon, but im warning you guys, its gonna suck. however, it seems that geocities has to review it for a while, since i bought a real webpage and a real domain name. unitll then, i setup a free domain name website. this should only be needed for a few more hours. check it out! www.geocities.com/fourxfred/home.html

oh damn, i didn't know about this unitl just now... I like to think that im pretty good at creating websites, so ill volunteer to take over the website stuff from you fred. just tell me what to put up there and it'll be there asap... i can setup our own personal forum as well too. I can even host it all but I have a slow 30k/s max upload so the best place to host it would probably be on trunk monkey's server. not that 15 people will really even hit it that hard, and it will be easier to administrate if its local for me... so we'll see... and oh yeah i like NEX too

FourXFred
08-09-2004, 02:32 PM
damnit, i wish i didnt already buy the domain name and setup a website. now i dont know what to do. ill setup the site i already bought for the hell of it, and maybe there will be some way of transferring the name over to trunkmonkeys server. i dont know, i completely dont understand

Nick26
08-09-2004, 02:39 PM
if you only did it just today, call up and cancel it... Then again what they probably made you pay for is just a domain name(the www.newenglandexplorers.com) that will point to the free site you created I assume(popup ads). If its only a domain name we can use that to point to a different server instead. On the other hand if they gave you webspace with the domain name too then we can upload the site we create to there. But thats a waste of money in my opinion because I don't think we will need that much bandwidth, and if discover we really do need more than basic cable modem upload bandwidth (30k/s) than we can probably store it on trunkmonkeys server for no charge from what it sounded like. PM me how much it was and what the package was and I'll figure something out.

Up until April, my website was on Delphi Forums. When they started being down more than up, I decided to cancel my Plus account there.....after all I didn't visit any forums there anymore since the ones I visit have moved to different forum servers, and paying $40 a year for a site that was down more than up....I got fed up.......so I moved my website back to Geocities......only until I can find somewhere dependable to put it. I might look into where you have your site, Mike

I'm using www.lunarpages.com for my www.swanrivercustoms.com and have been VERY happy with them.... since this thread is now about webhosting

For the club to be successful, we need to not only help everyone out with their trucks, plan events, and stay in touch, but we also have to be organized, and give certain people tasks, so they can specialize. I.E: president, treasurer (if we have money-based whatever) webmaster, pr, merchandise, trail liason, etc...

I think its AWESOME that Fred registered a domain for us, but perhaps it was a little hasty. Lets talk about stuff, before it happens.

While crawling the web I found this very cool Vinyl Sticker site. The reason it is cool is they have an online design engine which allows you to design the lettering on the fly and overlay/place it anywhere on your actual vehicle..

Vinyl Design (http://www.speedysigns.com/lettering/vehicle_lettering_years_FORD.htm)

On the fly font viewing tip:

Put text in edit mode
click on the font selection box to highlight it.
scroll up/down with mouse wheel to see changes

aaron, i simply dont understand why we need to have such a well organized club with more political members than the bush administration. i was thinking just a group of people who go wheeling, or meeting together, with stickers on their vehicles, and a simple website to keep everybody informed. the way i was thinking about setting it up was that it wouldent cost anything to be in this club, with the exception of the price of a sticker. since there wouldent be any yearly dues to be a member, there would be no need for a treasurer. since there is under 20 of us, there wouldent really need to be people to be in charge of certain areas or districts of the new england area. if we setup a crappy website on geocities (like i already have, check it out www.newenglandxplorers.com ) then we wouldent need a webmaster. i am willing to organize runs, run my website, and collect money and send out stickers. i will pay for the site, and whatever else may come up, up to a certain percentage.

i agree we would need organization like you suggested aaron, but only if we had a much larger group of people in the club. if what i am offering to do is not good enough for the 13 of us currently saying that we are in the club, then possibly this organization would run better with someone else at the helm.

what i am offering:

1-simple website
2-sticker distribution
3-run organization, with the help and input of everyone else in the club

if that isnt good enough, then i am withdrawing from the club. you guys can do it some other way with someone else. i will give the domain name to whomever wants it, if they will explain to me like the idiot that i am how to do such a manuver.

Nick26

Fred...

The last thing I want is for you to not be apart of this - without you, I don't think we would have had half of the activities we've been on.

As for my thoughts about the "organization" of a club, it was just musings considering how other clubs are set up, it's one way to go. You're idea of 15 people who are local eXplorer enthusiats getting together is just as good - And simpler! :)

A really appreciate the TIME and ENERGY you're willing to put in here. Much thanks.

Oh... and t-shirts would be kickass too!

aaron, i simply dont understand why we need to have such a well organized club with more political members than the bush administration.

Precisely! I'm a core member of the New England Subaru Impreza Club (NESIC) (http://www.clutchdrop.com/) and that's the exact problem we're going through right now. The club founder and president was Kris Marciniak, one of the drivers for Trunkmonkey Racing, and he stepped down from the club about two years ago due to all the political BS that was forming in the club.

For 20 or 30 guys with Explorers who just want to have fun, we don't need a political organization or body. We don't need a treasurer. We just need a guy that people respect and will listen to. When that guy says, "we're having a meet", we have a meet. Simple as that. :D

NESIC hasn't had any official member-organized meets for quite a while because people are too busy fighting over who gets to run what and, whenever someone steps up to the plate to volunteer to do something, somebody else protests because they don't like the person who volunteered. Then again, NESIC has a few thousand members and is the largest and most active chapter of the North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club (http://www.nasioc.com/), so of course there's going to be a lot of crap flung around. :)

I'm 100% in Favor of Fred running a site in any manor he wants too. Lets face it, he's the reason most of us have gotten our Trucks dirty in the first place. IMO the simpler the better; while its nice to think in "Grand Scheme" terms, the reality is the site would mostly be for a core group of regulars... I don't think we need an IPO at this time. ;)

Nick26

thats what you get when you deal with monkeys i guess! :D

So Sean, whats the story with your webspace? would it cost us anything? and what can you do for us DNS wise? cost?

Fred, I still think its better to cancel that one you made before its too late(or just cancel it after this month) and I don't think its a big deal using a free URL forwarding srevice for our domain name. Thats what I do with my site and it only adds an extra word to the domain name.

sorry, yeah cardomain is fine and we'll just have links to those from our site or to where ever people have there stuff hosted. Pending the amount of web space we have we may be able to keep stuff up there for people who don't already have anywhere to host there files.

yeah, my apologies too. i missed that post.

since i only bought a 25 megabite website, im not sure if there would be roomo or not to have a writeup of the members rigs there. cardomain sounds like an excellent idea. as soon as i get out of work, ill fix up that crapbox website i already started.

nick, i already payed for the first month, unfortunately. i can cancel anytime, but i figure i might aswell just use what i already bought, and in september, if my website still totally sucks, then we will definitely have to switch over to yours. id rather have someone who knows about this stuff do it, rather than me. by the sounds of it, there are a lot better hosting companies out there than the one i hastily chose. ill set it up for the hell of it, see what happens, and i will discuss it with you either through PM's, or, much easier, through AIM. the website is currently running, which means that geocities has already processed my request and i own the domain name.

thats what you get when you deal with monkeys i guess! :D

So Sean, whats the story with your webspace? would it cost us anything? and what can you do for us DNS wise? cost?

I can provide server space and run DNS for you for free in exchange for a non-intrusive link back to me somewhere on the site. The Mambo content management software will automatically set up the Web site for you; you guys just need to add content. There are functions like integrated calendar, so that will allow you to plan events.

For an example of the content management software in action, go to www.hamorhollow.com (my wife's business) and check it out. All the menu items and everything are automatically taken care of by the software...you just need to add text and images.

Why am I offering this for free? I'm a geeky nice guy. :) Edit: I also provide free hosting and DNS for the New England Subaru Impreza Club (http://www.clutchdrop.com/).

Regarding the domain, all Fred needs to do is update his domain entry to use my DNS servers and I'll take care of the rest.

If someone else wants to host the site, no worries. I'm not here to step on any toes. Besides, I'm a n00b, why should you trust me? :D Also, if one of you guys wants to design the site, the Mambo software can use custom templates. You only have to design a single page, and Mambo applies that design to the entire site.

Trunkmonkey
08-10-2004, 01:06 PM
Also, regarding the content management software, multiple people can be assigned editor status. So, you can have one guy whose job it is to update the calendar. One guy is a news writer. One guy takes care of the core "About the Club" pages on the site. One guy takes care of the gallery (if you want one). Etc.

The software is template driven so you only need to design a single page (or choose an existing template). If you want to update the whole site, just make a single change in the template and the entire site gets updated in one shot.

Another example of the software in action is my employer: www.pepper.com

I also provide free hosting for the New England Subaru Impreza Club (although no one has updated the site since March): www.clutchdrop.com

oh, and i got the homepage of the site working. let me know what you think, either good or bad. and let me know either here, through a PM, or through AIM. my screen name is FourXFred

www.newenglandxplorers.com

I think the site looks great. The background is killer! For the shirts I need to have somone get together a Design. I dont know if everyone remembers the old ECX Shirts. I was thinking somthing Similar but to only add a 3rd Generation X on the shirt, so we have 1st 2nd and 3rd. The black T-shirts with the greay look really good. Thats what my ECX shirt was. If I remeber I will post pics of my ECX shirt or if anyone else has one they can do it also. So once we get all that solved I will go down to the shirt place and get a quote.

I think it should be kept as simple as possible. Matt, that is an awesome idea about t-shirts. Keep it up guys! :chug:

Scott...I totally understand your circumstances, but you still have to get your butt up here sometime!!! :D

So far this whole hootenanny is looking pretty good. Not to throw fuel into the political "fire" but it may not be a bad idea to just have someone looking over legal aspects of where we go or would like to go. More than one of us have been caught Trespassing with a Motor Vehicle... *cough*

Maybe Tim's photo of our recent mods (funny...I guess the camera just didn't catch Tim's airdam) can go on a T-shirt. :D I'm particularly proud of how my antenna and spoiler complement each other. Maybe I DO need a confederate flag hangin from that thing...

Isaac, I would love to, but when you only can work 2 days a week; driving to VT just isn't practical for me. I would love to meet up with you guys, but I currently lack the financial means to make any long drives. Soem day I will make it up there, but until then and since none of you have met me yet, I shall remain shrouded in my cloud of mystery :p

Probably not but that still uses the same abbreviation as New England Explorers... unless we use NEE? but that sounds kinda weird

But has NEX already been used/spoken for? If not it can mean whatever we want right? I like the NEX abbreviation, and agree NEE :thumbdwn: its just weird. As such NEX could mean New England Explorers or North East Explorers or Nick's Excellant Explorer ;)

It's not a club.... its a travel website:

And a software company:

yeah, i checked them out when i was stupidly registering our domain name. i still think grocery getter offroad would have been awesome, and maybe attracted more members (cherokees and blazers and such, which are both just as good off road as a plodah is)

We will be...the 'wheelers who say NEE. (In case "Ni" is copyrighted.)

This is a great idea. I have been following the Brookline runs and wishing that I had time to join in. I also agree with the idea of having it be an informal group rather than a formal organization. New England Explorers sounds good. Keep it simple, right. I know someone (neighbor) who is starting a small business making tee-shirts. He has no minimum and does the graphic design as well.

aaron, i simply dont understand why we need to have such a well organized club with more political members than the bush administration. i was thinking just a group of people who go wheeling, or meeting together, with stickers on their vehicles, and a simple website to keep everybody informed. the way i was thinking about setting it up was that it wouldent cost anything to be in this club, with the exception of the price of a sticker. since there wouldent be any yearly dues to be a member, there would be no need for a treasurer. since there is under 20 of us, there wouldent really need to be people to be in charge of certain areas or districts of the new england area. if we setup a crappy website on geocities (like i already have, check it out www.newenglandxplorers.com ) then we wouldent need a webmaster. i am willing to organize runs, run my website, and collect money and send out stickers. i will pay for the site, and whatever else may come up, up to a certain percentage.

Fred the site looks great! I don't have any write up for my truck yet, since the only thing that is not stock is my headunit, hopefully things will happen this spring if I get a good tax refund and nothing major comes up

I have a cardomain site and there isn't much on there yet but here's the link

Do you want me to go ahead and try and get a design for our t-shirts and then we can sort out if you want me or the other guy to get the t-shirts depending on cost. Anyone wanna get the decals started?

FourXFred
08-24-2004, 04:52 PM
yeah, if you guys want shirts, its all you man

im sorry guys, but i have been wicked wicked buisy lately at work, and dealing with other stuff aswell (like a possible solid axle swap in my ranger, and working on my fourwheeler). i may not be the best candidate for the president of this club right now, as i simply dont have time to do anything. ill still pay for the website and everything, and continue calling myself president untill someone else steps in and takes over for me. any nominees?

NEX encompasses all New England states. There are several NEX members from CT which you can connect with for local get togethers and events.
