If any of you guys (or gals) are from Illinois I would reall appreciate it if you could tell me what trails you know of. I want to go for a run, but can't get to far away from school. So.. If you know of any within an hour of Chicago (in any direction), or near Macomb (where I go to school, on the wester side of the state) I would appreciate you telling me where they are and any other details.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Dave,
I know that there are some trials in Peoria, right around the river. I've never checked them out personally, but I do know a guy that goes there, and he says its pretty good. There's also a place just north of Pontiac, thats part of an offroad club. I have been there, but in an old crappy blazer. Its pretty rough on your truck, so beware!!! I'm from Bloomington, So these might be too far away for you, but maybe not!! Happy wheelin!!

I'd like to go also. Anytime on a weekend would work fine for me. Email me or just post it here and we'll get together. Peoria, Macomb, Chicago, It's all plenty close enough for me. I live by Freeport so I'm in the same neck of the woods as you guys.

P.S. The sooner the better

I'm gonna need to do some scouting before we go, just so I konw what we're getting into. Unfortunatley, I just got really stuck this past weekend and blew my auto hubs. Thats going to put off the whole thing for me until I can get new ones. I don't suppose you guys have any manual or auto ones lying around, do you?

OK!!!! My hubs are on!! I just ran this trail (kinda small, but challenging) and it performed wonderfully!!! I am planning to go to the one trail by the Illinois river this weekend to check it out. When I get back, I'll make sure and let you know how it was and see who wants to go.

Are you all still interested? I hope so!

Riff,

I am still interested let me know what dates that you had in mind. I may also need directions from Macomb. One question though... Do you think that I will have any problems with this trail with a completely stock setup. I want to make sure that I am not going to get stuck to bad. Email me and let me know.

Thanks,

Its kinda a long story, but I'll make it short....the past two weekends i've been trying to get out there, but blizard like conditions prevented me from getting there. Then i was driving around on the lake bed of lake bloomington here (the water is like 12 feet low now) and there was about 8 inches of snow on the ground. Basically, after driving for a while, i found myself sliding towards the lake, and eventually slightly...er....um.....in it!!!! No one got hurt, and my truck is fine (THANK GOD!!!!) And since this trail is near the Illinois river, i figured that we might want to let the snow get down a little bit....ya know...so we can see exactly what kind of surface we're on....Let me know what you think. And I'll try to get out there as soon as I can.... cool?

Scott,

I'm glad to here that you (and your truck) are okay. Unless I was real familiar with the trail I wouldn't want to try it when there is a lot of snow on the ground. Hopefully in a couple of weeks the weather will warm up a bit. Keep us updated!

All I know is that if I don't go 4 wheeling soon, I'm going to have a conniption fit. This past week, the weather has been awesome in Illinois and I got the Spring Time itch real bad. Let's stop procrastinating and get together already. What do ya say gang? Let's pick a date. What about Saturday March 11th?

I've moved to Carpentersville about a year and a half ago and don't know any trails around here yet. Someone in the area know anything? Thanks,

Ok, its officail...im a slacker. Sorry its taken me soooooo long to get back on this whole trail thing. But as it stands now, Im gonna run the trail tomorrow (saturday, the 4th) with mine (a sligthtly over stock explorer) and my buddy's (a stock Cherokee). Im gonna take pictures and get them online hopefully by tomorrow night, if not then, then probably by sunday night. I'll post them on my web page, and you all can view them and decide if its worth the drive. If it is, i was thinking that next weekend would be a great time. probably saturday early in the day, then i hear that there is another part of that trail that we could do after lunch or somthing......I'll konw for sure tomorrow evening.

Again...sorry its taken me soo long to get back....hope you are all still interested...

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!

In case you couldn't already tell, I ran the trails today, and they basically rocked!!! The whole story is that there are actually 2 sites. One is really really short, but is a good warm up for first time offroaders. It also has a little more hill and bump type things than the other one. The stock Cherokee made it through with little trouble. Just one spot, and you'll see that on my web page, as soon as i get it written.

Then, just down the road from that one are trials that pretty much run for a long time along the illinois river. I didn't get to explore all of those, becuase we were starting to loose light. There was a small creek that would have to be passed to go any further than we did, but i didn't feel like getting stuck in the dark. As far as skill level goes, those are mostly ruts, mud, hills, water, sand, trees, blah blah blah. This one was neat, because on all of the deep puddles, there were always ways around them, if you didn't want to risk it. As you will see in some of the pictures (If i can get to a scanner soon), water went all the way through my engine area, and splashed the bottom of my hood. There are some places that I went through that i didn't want the Cherokee, or a stock explorer to go through. I'll try to get the pics online as soon as possible.

basically, if you are like me, and like outdoors, this place is really neat. there is some trash on the trails...beer cans, etc. but it isn't really horrible. Its right next to the river, and there is a psuedo beach, so we could break there for lunch or whatever. The other thing is, is that there are a bunch of trails running off of each other, and going in a bunch of different directioins. so if you felt like exploring, then you can. Overall, it was a fun day, and would be for anyone who just enjoys driving in adverse conditions.

I'll try to get the rest of the stuff online soon. let me know when you all think would be a good time to go. cool?

All right, I'm ready.

My suggestion is everybody tell what days they can make it this month and when everybody has their 2 cents posted we'll go for the day most people can make it.

I can go any sat/sun this month EXCEPT the 19th.

Riff, figure out the directions so we can all meet up somewhere thats easy to find.

If my fingers still work properly we should have six rigs and I might have a guy to come with in his ranger. It should be fun.

I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Riffman,

Great pics. Can’t wait to try out the trails. It will be my first time off roading so I hope its not too challenging. By the looks of the pictures and the way you describe it, it doesn’t seam too tough.

I’m good to go any weekend except May 27th and June 17th. The sooner the better I say!

Ok, the bug has bit me. I can't wait to get back there. I am gonna go back this weekend with the same guy. Only this time, hes not stock anymore. After the fun that he had last weekend, he went out and bought new wheels, tires, and a suspension lift!!!! Aparently he has money to burn. Anyway, if any of you feel like going this weekend, as well as later weekends...we are gonna go this sunday. Probably getting there about 1:00 or so. If any of you do want to go this weekend, let me know, and I will look for you. I'll still take some more pictures to try to give you a better idea of what the trails are actually like.

WHEW!!!!! I just got done cleaning my truck. I have never been in soo much gook and crap in my life (though I don't have a great wealth of expreience (spelling?)). Pics are coming soon. It took me about 2 hours total to get all the crap off the outside of my truck. The inside is a whole different story.

In case you couln't tell yet, this weekend w\ kampy got a little messy. I don't think that anyone in there right mind, short of having 40" boggers should try this one part of the trail.

The rest however, would be a good begining trail. Kampy, you agree, right? So pretty much if your looking for a good time to beat around a little...enjoy some company...but not get into really hard serious offroading, then i think that it would be a good place.

I actually learned a bit from kampy, too. Thanx a whole lot man!!! If you come back down, let me know, im gonna get you a frickin cake or somting...hehehe...anyway...the offer is still out there to offroad for anyone. But if you do come, then it would be quite smart to have towhooks. trust me.

I still haven't cleaned my truck.

Yea, I had fun. Ribs still hurt from laughing at Riff.

My parents said I was like that when I was his age but I don't believe them!

It's a VERY mild trail with a few three foot deep swamp holes thrown in for good measure.

Don't come without a shovel AND front and rear tow hooks.

Riff,
look for information into that farm thats open for mudding.

buy some towhooks!!!

I've got my feelers out for a place thats closer to me to go out and slop around in. Will let you know if anything turns up.

Big Dave, what happened to ya?? Thought we lost you, hadn't heard from you in quite a while.

Riff, did you ever get all the muck off your steering wheel? Did you find out anything about that farm that was in that area? Did you get tow hooks put on yet or will we have to pull your bumper all the way off before you get around to it?

I for one have been lazy, got the name of the place I was looking for but haven't called for info yet. That's how it goes when you get old, fat and lazy though.

This week I will see what I can find out about this place up here and get back with you guys.

Riff, the part number for that GM towhook kit is 999866 . It will set you back a whole $18.27 . Should be able to order it at any GM dealer. Also note the E-mail address change.

It will have to be this weekend (the 8 or 9th) or 22 or 23 and after. I have togo home and see a buddy of mine woh is graduating from OCS and will only be in town for a week before he has to go back to Quantico. I would really like to get out and go this weekend, but I know you all have busy schedules.

A little off topic, but have any of you changed your rear brake shoes before? If so, how long will it take me and how difficult is it? I need to changemy shoes, but I am wondering how much time it will take.

If it won't take too long, maybe we could do it saturday before we go out? http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif Kinda scared to do it alone the first time.

Does your Explorer have 4 wheel disk breaks? I assume it does. I have a 97 Sport and it does. Anyway, have you ever changed your front breaks? If so, it’s the same difference. If not, I’ll be happy to help you out. It should take about 30 minutes. Of course if you have drum breaks in the back, I’ve never done those before but would help you anyway, I’m sure we could figure it out. Anyway, let me know and I’ll be sure to bring the tools along.

I want to thank Riffman for finding this place.

Now she did say that there were some trails around that the local jeep club uses, and those are accessable...unfortuantely she doesn't really know about them. I left a message for the local club to give me a call, and am still waiting to here back from them.

Now, this was not intended. This weekend most likely would be the weekend to put body lift on my truck. I just got it and need to talk to you riff regarding instal. Too bad I'm leaving for Europe the next weekend. I'll be back 17th of August so might do anything after that day.

I just got this out of 4wheeler magazine.

"August 19-20
Hank's 4x4 jamboree will be held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Mendota, Illinois. contact: Hank Walsh, 815-434-4077, 815-433-3096"

Anybody Interested?

Kampy
07-23-2000, 10:11 PM
You bet, I'm interested. Mendota is only an hour away from the house and I know it's close to you also. Only 15 miles north of La Salle/Peru. I wonder whats going on? If its a real jamboree or a tough truck contest? I really don't want to pound my truck into oblivion, but I'm game to watch others do it. I didn't get my mag yet so I'll have to wait to find out.

That is the weekend before school starts for me, so I am not sure whether or not I'll be able to attend. RIff, if you can find out any details let me know via the board or email. I'm with Kampy, I don't want to mess up my truck but its always fun to watch others do it.

ok....Hank just called back, and here are the specs

its a 2 day thing, and its $15 a day or $25 for both days.

They have a truck show for everyone for free. there are a bunch of different classes too, so if you enter your clean truck, it might not be too bad.....

They also have a tought truck, that WILL beat the sh*t out of your truck. entry for that is either 15 or 20, and there are different classes for that too....

There is a mud bog contest that i think will be cool....there is an entry of 10 for the 4 and 6 cylinder class.

there is a truck pull for different classes, and that is 10 or 15....

there is a truck drag race on the track that is 10..

he said that there is gooing to be some monster trucks running...tractor pulls.....blah blah blah blah.....

It really sounds like its going to be a lot of fun. Personally, im going to run the mud bog, and probably the truck pull...maybe the drag...i dunno.....all i know is im gonna get my ass kicked, but it will be fun!!!! the only down side, is to run....you have to wear a seat belt, and a helmet. (for insurance purposes)

He has sent me a schedual of events, and i will post whats happening on what day as soon as i get it.

------------------------------------------------------------

as far as a run for a celebration.....Im game...im always game....anyting anything....if it rains on friday...i might be in pekin...but im not sure...it depends on amber....(i know...im whipped....)

Did Hank send you something with the different classes on it? I know you posted it above but I wanted to double check, different classes for the mud bog and for the truck pull? How exactly is it broken down? Let me know how its all gonna pan out.

Oh and by the way, I'm beginning to see orange!!!, spent all day fabing up mount brackets for the winch. It's bolted on, just need to run the hyd lines and the electrical stuff. Still have to figure out how I'm going to put the tow hooks back on. The winch stuff took over the tow hooks' home. I took pics so if Ricks interested he will be able to post the install. I mounted it behind the bumper, I didn't care for the pushbar mounts, and I think I kept most of my approach angle.

Kampy

Yes I got a hydraulic milemarker 9000. I figured it was time to try something different.

I've had a Ramsey RE 10,000 on a fullsize Chevy, heck of a winch, worm gear drive, strong as heck.

Had an 8274 Warn on a blazer, another great winch, loved the line speed.

I wanted to get away from the bigger alternator, dual battery, overheated winch motor problems. #1 because there just isnt room under the hood and you have to pay big bucks to get a big alternator to pull long distances. If you have to pull a long way in really bad stuff you have to stop several times to let the motor cool down and it takes quite a while. Been there, done that!!!

This will pull as long as the truck will run. It might have been the wrong answer but I wanted to try. If you don't try you'll never know. Plus the hyd setup is lighter which will help my suspension.

I guess we'll see when its all together.

riffman
08-01-2000, 10:12 PM
thats the winch i wanna get. hope i get to see how it works.....

sorry...but i haven't checked on the classes yet....i'll try again tomorrow.

There is Hank's 4x4 Jamboree in metamora coming up on the 19-20 of august. I think a few of us are planning on doing the mud drag, truck pulling, blah blah blah.....check back on the page before this one to see all of the stuff.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Hank on what belongs in what class for competition....

riffman
08-04-2000, 12:59 AM
ok.....got the classes......heres how it goes....

for the dirt drag race....its one class...someone will draw 2 names out of a hat, and they will race....so you could be up against some litte zuki....or you could be up against a 3/4 ton ford with a 460 and a blower....

for the truck pull....(there will be a sled named magnum that you will pull.....oh yeah...and no ball hitches are allowed....you need to find a clevase that attaches to your hitch..) there are 2 classes....
class a. small block's and v6's
class b. big blocks and diesels

for the tough truck....anything goes..

for back to back pulling.......same as the dirt drag....but on a high note...we will be on dirt, not pavement, and he said that most trucks either get pulled right away, or niether one moves... and there is a lot of spinning tires too, so he said for that not to discourage us...cause it really is a lot of fun....

on sunday...the only classes competition is the mud bog....

it has:
class 1= 4 and 6 cyl...where we can have any tire...any lift.....blah blah blah....
class 2= v8 stock and 33" tires or under....no lifts...
class 3= mod class.....37" tires and under
class 4= super mod.....44" and under
and it goes up from there to open and pro class

on the mud drag...we can go up to a higher class....but not down into one...but since we are the lowest...then i guess we don't have to worry about it...

oh yeah...one more thing....for class 1 and 2....there are trophy prizes....from there on up there are cash prizes...

Ok...i know some of you are thinking....damn...this sounds like its really gonna be for the big built up trucks!! Well..i asked hank the same thing, and he said that the crowd seems to go for the underdog...so the litte guys (us) make it a lot of fun.....and a lot of the events are right in front of the grandstand too....so thats a lot of exposier for your truck too....

besides....how cool would it be to beat the sh*t out of some freakin s-10 or a blazer?!?!?!

he wanted me to make sure that all of you know that to run in any of these events....seatbelts and helmets are REQUIRED!! and for insurance reasons....he can't let any passengers in your truck either....

so whos going?

im gonna try like hell to get on my lift before then...

"The fairgrounds is located on the east edge of town, on 1st avenue.
If you are coming in on route 34 from interstate 39, follow the state (brown signs)
for the fairgrounds, at the corner of 1st avenue and us route 34 turn left or south,
then take first avenue 7 blocks south to the north entrance of the fairgrounds.

INTERSTATE 80 IS 12 MILES...... SOUTH OF MENDOTA
INTERSTATE 39 IS 2 MILES..... EAST OF MENDOTA
INTERSTATE 88 IS 28 MILES........ NORTH OF MENDOTA"

Good maps Riff, I talked to a guy today that lives in Mendota. The maps are right on. The easiest way will be to meet at the truckstop like was initially proposed. I believe there are two of them at the exit so someone has to pick??? And no, I cant remember the names. Might drive down on sunday to find out if no other info has been posted. Later.

2001ExpSport

I would prefer meeting at the truck stop. It's large and easy to find. If we park near the entrance, we will be easy to see for others that might be meeting up with us. As for me, I have never been in that part of the state so it's new ground for me. I will be leaving early because I live about an hour east of the fairgrounds. I think we should get there as early as possible so we can get good parking spots. As far as events like this go, parking will fill up fast. This is a state wide event so a lot of people will be coming.

Let me know what you guys think. We should come to an agreement for a meeting by Wednesday or Thursday in case any straglers to the thread want to meet us as well.

Also, we should decide how long we will wait for others before we move on. I did this a lot in California, 10 of us would meet up on our bikes and then ride the trails all day. We set up designated meeting spots and how long we would wait....etc.

Just thinking ahead.

...but if the truck drags is at 1...and we can register at 10.....if we showed up right at 10, then that would give us 3 hours to gawk at the other trucks before the competition begins.....so...maybe if we meet at the truck stop at like 9:30 then waited until like...uh.....9:50 for any scragglers...(like dave and andre..hahahaha)...then head on over to the fairgrounds....that sound good to you? i don't know the name of the truckstops, but we could all leave our cbs on like channel 25 or somthing like that, then holler out when you get near.....or somthing like that....

It's real close to the fairgrounds, I drove down to check it out tonight. For those coming in off of I-39 it's exit 72. I'll be there waiting unless plans change. i just got a reply back from a guy on the wisconsin board....here it is...

Hey Scott!
The pipeline is located about 10 miles east of Mountain WI just past Crooked Lake. It runs N-S at that point, from hwy 64 at the south to Boat Landing Road at the north. If you would like to get involved with our rehab project, we are having a work date on November 11th - meet on the Pipeline at the top of the rock hill, just south of FS 2101/Bucks Ranch Road on the Pipeline. Bring a shovel, rake, and gloves and lend a hand!!

Otherwise, there are numerous clubs in Wisconsin who frequent the area. I do suggest you go there with an experienced group....most of it is no problem, but there are some extremely deep holes that most folks wish to avoid.

Check out the Wisconsin web site at our NRTA link for some historical information on this area. http://www.wi4wda.org

Hope to see ya up there!

Riff, I posted on another board and a guy that lives up there sent this reply,

If you're free this weekend, we have our fall run fri-sun this
weekend. Even doing a "rally" (insert evil laugh).
Staying at McCaslin Mountain campground on hwy F east of Lakewood, WI.
Bring long undies, it was cold up there this past weekend. There was
frost on the tent before we even got to bed!

The Pipeline is an area on the eastern edge of the Nicolet National
Forest, an actual right-of-way for the natural gas pipeline. The pipe
is about 4 feet (is most spots) under the surface. ANR Pipeline Co.
allows the use of the property, and in turn 4wheelers help keep the
right-of-way clear by traffic. The trail head is about 8 miles east of
Lakewood, WI, and continues south past hwy 64. Not all of the area is
open, and if anybody goes there.. DO NOT CROSS THE ROCK BARRIERS!
This could result in trail closure of possible death (yup, I said
death) since the closed areas have insufficient coverage over the
pipe. A 36" pipe exploding isn't a good thing. The area is patrolled
by the Forest Service who have full law enforcement rights (since it
fringes the forest property.) There are many off-shoot trails also,
but you have to be careful since many of the closed trails aren't
marked as such. The Pipeline trail itself is really kind of boring.
Just a series of mud holes connected by a very easy (station wagon)
trail. It is the other trails in the area that make it a great place.

Cruise up there if you can, I guarantee you'll have a blast.

If moab dates are right...meaning if they hold off till the end of may, then I'll go locked and regeared.....I plan on trailering it somehow...Rent a u-haul or something...I don't need anymore miles and I'd prefer not to break down and that be my only source of transportation

Seems like they're scheduling Truckhaven for middle of January. It would be kind of nice to be able to get away from our "beautiful" cold weather but the drive scares me. I'm about to go to OKC and it's only 800 miles each way, now think about Californi,,,,, I dunno.

I'd sure love to go. Moab sounds more like a possibility for a family event (if it's moved to June).

We'll see.

Also I would hope to start early in Attica next year.

I would like to at least visit this "Pipeline" thing and see what it's all about.

I'm busy though next weekend, then it's 11th of November, 18th we're wheeling in Attica, then it's Thanksgiving weekend and later we're into December (snow, ice, cold you know- too late).

Perhaps if we just go up north and look around in Wisconsin on 18th instead of Attica?

We should really start thinking about this thing that Cameron started with the Illinois Explorer Club. Perhaps there is a chance we could get a group together and do something about these trails in Illinois? Like buying some land you know?

Just a thought......

I hear the pipe line is nothing but mud...Not ot mention....I don't know about the drive...But I like the idea of Cameron's idea about the Illinois Explorer Club...But the land buying idea? At the early stages, it seems kinda far fetched....But then again, I could be wrong
Thanks,
Pete

riffman
10-28-2000, 02:57 AM
that would be awesome! unfortunately....land that is big enough, and good enough to wheel on would take a WHOLE lot of capital...even at good prices.....we would want some kind of water on site...and at VERY VERY least about 50 acres...and thats on the small side...

now theres always the idea of knocking off a bank, or perhaps fort knox...then we could do it.....lol....

and yeah..i think the pipeline is almost all mud....with only 1 or 2 rock crawling areas...so i dunno.....

Dre
10-28-2000, 02:38 PM
I've been in Real Estate sales for the last 10 years and know for a fact that buying land somewhere in the middle of nowhere is not a problem. Especially if it's not used in agriculture. That could be cheap and if you gather a few guys to do it together, well, that's not that bad. There is a responsibility there though since you'd have to take care of it too somehow. Now, we're so busy with our lives I don't know how we would take care of the land but then again, I might be wrong.

It was just a thought. Might have to talk to Cameron as well about it.
Moab looks great but it would look even better in June when my kids are out of school.
Truckhaven might be tough since it's in January and all the way in Californi......

That's all folks.

Hey guys! I'm from the Peoria area and noticed some threads about wheeling around here. I just went today at a place near the river. There are some pretty good mud bogs and a couple of crick crossing.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere else in this area to go.

Man, I would love to go to Attica on the 18th of November. It's my birthday. But on the 11th I'm scheduled to bring my truck to DPS to start the turbocharger install. And I guarantee that it will take well over one week to do. More like a month.

On a side note, the Northern Illinois Explorer Club is not trying to buy land for off roading on it's own, we are actually will be working with other clubs such as the IFWDA (Illinois Four Wheel Drive Association) to have land set aside for recreational use. Or maybe a joint purchase by the members of many local off-road clubs but that is a logistical nightmare.

Please visit

That would be the idea. Get some land, work on it and use it for your recreational purposes. I have a friend that owns a huge chunk somewhere in WI. I'll talk to him to see how much and what's not. I know he's got woods there and a creek. That would be cool. Another think is if municipalities somewhere down state would let you use your land the way you wish. Democracy you know.

Even opening an Attica type of park would be so much cool.

Just a thought.

Yep, that's the place. It is Mendonhall Rd. or Mendonhall Boat ramps.

There was five of us. A stock Jeep Wrangler, S10, full size Blazer with 33's, and an f-150. We all got stuck a couple of time's, but that's what made it fun.

A couple of places are missleading. There are cricks that look like you could drive right through it, but as soon as you get in, you just sink. Can you say RIVER SLUDGE!!

Anyway, there is another place to get to the river. It's right off of I-74. I haven't been there in a while, but i'm thinking about checking it out soon. Maybe i'll check it out this weekend. I'll let you guys know.

OK boys and girls, I'm alive. Everybody present? OK. Here's what's happening with me. I will be lifted for the event Pete as my 2" suspension lift is sitting in my garage right now. I'm shopping for a winch. Now I just bought pretty nice set of Dunlop Rover Mud tires today but looks like it's gonna be a wrong size. Riff, do you need 35" Mud tires? These are installed on my 15X8 black AR wheels. I'd love to trade them for a set of 33's. OK now, problem is I have much more to worry about now. Coming back from work today I noticed some kind of squeeling noise coming from the front wheel. When I took the wheel off hub was very hot and hard to turn like the brakes were locked. Almost by my house I heard a knock in that wheel and now there's more noise. Looks like either something with brakes or bearings. Let's just hope it's not the hubs since I didn't even put it in 4 wheel since Attica. I'm taking the whole thing apart tomorrow as I need to put new coils in. Looks like I'll replace the brake outfits anyway as I have new sets sitting on the counter. If I have everything together I'm game for both dates. Sat. and Sun. and Lafayette looks very nice to me. Ramada there is pretty cool, a lot better then in Danville. If I can't put it all together I'll let you know so you guys can stop by my place sometime before the run and help me get it all there. OK now, at ease!

Okay, I just got done wheeling on some new trails right off I-74. It's actually right off Pinecrest Dr. It has some pretty good hills. It's in a creek bottom. We got stuck a couple of times, but that was because we bottomed. There was one good mud hole that we didn't even want to attempt because we are stock. The hill going in and out is pretty long, winedy, and rutted.

Oh ya! The only bad part is there are big cement blocks that say keep out. They have been moved off the trail. We didn't have any problems though.

If anyone is interested let me know at DR2641@home.com

on a different note, i found a park in Missouri. I realize that it would be quite a jaunt for most of you, but i would be remiss if i didn't at least mention it. this is the description i saw.

-- "St. Joe State Park - Missouri's third-largest state park - has the largest and one of the most popular off-road-vehicle areas in the Midwest, with about 2,000 acres for riding. The park is located in the heart of the Old Lead Belt in southeast Missouri, where much of the nation's lead ore was extracted. In 1975, St. Joe Minerals Corp. ceased operations here and donated the land to the state. The wooded portions of the 8,238-acre park provide horseback-riding and hiking trails, picnic areas and campsites for horseback riders and other guests. Monsanto Lake has a large swimming beach."

Its about an hour south of St. Louis. Never been there, never heard an account of the terrain from a fellow offroader. just found it one day.

There is also the Land Between the Lakes in north eastern tenesee. Quite a jaunt, but could be fun.

I want to go off-roading so bad I can taste it. I'm up to my elbows in project "turbo". I have seen that quarry in south Elgin. It doesn't look like they allow people to go off-roading in there. Too much liability. Everyone is way too sue-happy these days. To bad eh?

Anyway, I wouldn't want to go off roading in the snow. Snow has an uncanny ability to hide trail hazards. If I had a dedicated off-road truck I would be more willing to try it.

Hope to make it happen. Built from the ground up strictly for wheeling. Anyways, I hope we are all getting ready for MOAB? I know it's pretty far away but this would not hurt.

Anyone want to start planning? or perhaps it is too late already?

contact me. I'm going alone, driving there in my Un-Limited unless I can find someone to share a semi.

See YA!

hell man...i've been planning for Moab for the past 2 months!! I got a 2 car trailer lined up (sorry, both spots are taken), but i have yet to find a pull rig. grrr....i am pseudo looking at a 92 f30 xlt w\ a 7.3 powerstroke for only 6500. i think this is a pretty damn good deal, but i haven't seen the truck in person. this is what it looks like.

Oh, slots? Matt? lol;
No room for me? how come? it's still like half a year till the run, anyways, sounds like Moab is the place. Everybody's going.

If I"m looking to get on where should I search for my rooms? cabins?

HELP!!!

Scott, don't know if it matters to you or not but the 92 7.3 is an IDI motor not a DI, they don't have as much torque or power as the newer DI powerstroke, but they're still a good engine.

The DI "powerstroke" came out in the 94 model year.

Andre, you had to sign up for the trip and there were only 30 slots and they are all full. You can email GJarret to see if you can still get in.

Hey Matt, there was one last spot open so I did sign up and now I'm in the process of shopping for a room.
Where is that Silver Sage Motel everybody is staying at? I might just opt for the Super 8 or Best Western. Ramada is pretty cheap and I'm afraid that it might well be , well, cheap.

Gentlemen (if we may be called that),

I am now a college graduate. I am sorry for the long absence after the last run, but I had to focus on finishing up school. Now that I am done with school I am focused on getting a job. If any of you guys have an in with your IT departments and they are looking for Business Analysts please let me know. I really need to get a job so that I can start some serious mods to my truck. Hopefully get enough done to try and make the Moab run in May, but more realistically for later in the year. Let me know how you all are doing. Like I said, I will be in and out, email me directly if you like. I have a new address. It is wiu_sig@hotmail.com. Let me know about that Elgin spot. I would be up for exploring that (no pun intended). Later.

What's this Frank crap? For over a year we've called you Scott, I have three email addresses for you, and none are even close to the same, what gives?...........

I think I might have it narrowed down to two possibilities
1. Your in the witness protection program, but I can't understand WHY anyone would want to KILL you.
2. There's actually two of you (God help us all), the first is online riffman, now known as frank, the mild mannered guy who can't spell and who talks us into doing these fun things on the weekend. Wheeling.

The second is his evil twin Scott, the doofy acting mud eating lunatic who also can't spell and is a little on the slow side. See, he can't remember how to put his case in 4L or his windows up when he attempts to mud race with the big DAWG (me).

Which one it is doesn't really matter cause either way we lose - option 1 you dissapear because you've been found out = we're sad cause we NEVER get to see you again. Option 2 there's actually two of you = we're sad because we HAVE to see you again. Both of you!

Dave, I hope the job search goes well.

jummered@hotmail.com
frank.colba.lrw8@statefarm.com
frank.colba@stltechpartners.com

My full name is Frank Scott Colba. Frank is a generational name. The first born male is named Frank Somthing, and goes by Somthing. My dad is Frank Paul, and goes by Paul. My grandpa is Frank Henry and goes by Henry. and so on and so forth.....How I got to be called Frank, was at work one time. There just so happened to be another scott working there at the time, so it was a bit confusing. Then I came in with a ticket one time. They were looking at the ticket, and saw that my first name is Frank. So they were like, thats it...from now on you are Frank. And i still work for that company. So, then know me as Frank, but everywhere else I am Scott. But neither Scott or Frank can spell, so your right Krampy...er...Kampy.....

What is this thread about?

Moab?, Multiple personalities? Employment opportunities? That’s why this thread is a year old. We can't stay focused.

So what did everyone get for Christmas? What about them Bears?

We need to seriously plan a major outing for this spring. I know it's early but it seams that each time we plan a trip a bunch of people cant go because of conflicts. If we start talking about a spring time trip now, everyone is more apt to make that date(s) available.

Just a thought.

Big Dave! Shoot me an e-mail with your qualifications and I'll send you a list of available positions. That is, if your interested in working in Chicago. I'm a systems analyst at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and they are in need of systems people. Let me know and I'll see if I can't point you in the right direction.

It's never too early. Planning in advance will sure help us get more guys together. Attica once again? any new trails? When? Memorial day is the 28th of May. It's gonna be like right after Moab so it might not be a good idea to pick this date since some of us are going to Moab. Put some dates on, we'll talk.

Speaking of Moab, let me know if you want to get together for a room at Silver Sage Motel. I got one double room reserved. Anybody want to go with me on that trip? Pete? Dave? I can sure use some company. It's gonna be a long trip.

Guys,

It's good to talk with all of you again. I'll try to answer all the questions...

Matt - I still haven't scanned the pictures (I actually have to find them again). I still have your address, and I will try to get them out to you.

Andre - I would love to go to Moab this May, but I won't have the right setup or the money to finance that trip. at least I don't think I will. I am back in the Chicago area, but things will be pretty hectic for me for a while. I have to locate employment (thank you to all that are giving me options, I really appreciate it), and I am moving sometime in January. I will still be in the Chicago area, but I am not sure yet where I will be.

Cam - I'll email you a resume. I'm not a programmer, looking more for business analyst type. Requirements gathering, making sure the users and technical people are on the same page, stuff like that.

Frank, Riff, Scott (and any other personalities that are in that person that we don't yet know about) - What is the web site for your placement company?

Kampy and Ann(e) - Not sure if it has an e or not. - How is everything? I saw that you are going to Moab. Have fun. You'll finally be able to use the winch in a wheelin' setting, if you haven't already.

Pete - I wanted to thank you for getting my truck taken care of so quickly. I never did get to say thanks. I hope that everything worked out ok with yours as well.

I hope that I didn't forget anyone. I would be up for a Spring run. Maybe we can look for something up here, for a little change of scenary (sp?). Kampy, you're out near Galena aren't you? Have you heard of any spots out that way?

Also, I like that we have a sort of central thread to converse on. It's almost getting to the point where we will have to ask Rick if there can be groups for each region in the Serious Explorations area, (i.e. Serious North Explorations, Serious South Explorations, Serious Midwest Explorations, etc.)

Keep in touch, my new email address is wiu_sig@hotmail.com, in case you wanted to email me directly.

Kinda like a mini-vacation...I bet this is out of everyone's reach since you are all goin to Moab...I am out...The parent's say I can't go since I have no stable income now, and I owe them quite a bit (mall parking lot offroading) So, I was thinkin some sorta big off road spot in the local surrounding states, no more than 2 states away.....Who knows....just a thought.... O.k. I have read this thread from beginning to end and I want to go to ATTica! I have a 98 Sport 2WD stock right now. I will hopefully be getting a torsion twist and warrior shacle job done here in the next month or two. I don't have big tires(Dayton Timberland A/Ts on stock 15" rims). Will I be able to go to Attica and have fun?

Dre
01-14-2001, 03:00 PM
It might be pretty dificult wheeling in a 2WD truck there. Most of the trails require not only a 4WD but also a lift, bigger tires and lockers. A winch is a plus. Attica is not just a flat open field. It's hills, sand, water, mud, trees, rocks and a shitload of other very interesting things. It's fun, but to enjoy it you need a set of nice "wheels". Rich (RichSport94) went to Attica but only as a passenger since he owns a 2WD truck. You're always welcome to join one of us on any of the runs but as far as taking your truck there, I would advise not to.

Just my opinion.

Yea, thats what I told her and she just gave me a "look"(if your married you know it). Well, the hard part is over I have a 4WD. Now...
I was planning on putting a lift on my Sport and I had decided on the torsion twist and I was trying to decide on the warrior shackles or the add-a-leaf or maybe both. Money is a big issue and I don't want a monster Explorer that my wife can't get into. I want to be able to get it dirty and have fun at the same time, but I'm not looking to climb any mountains. I guess what it comes down to is I want to be able to go to Attica with you guys and keep up. Can someone tell me in plain english what I need to do to my Explorer(lift, hooks, light etc.) Thanks

RFR2212
01-16-2001, 09:46 PM
So, Splash wants to run at Attica eh? Well, right on! With money being a simple issue, I believe you can do either the shackles or add-a-leaf and the torsion twist. Add a body lift on that and you should be able to comfortably get a set of BFG 32x11.5 MT's on your truck. Toss on some tow hooks front and rear, and you're set to rip up Attica with us. Now, this is all commin from a guy who owns a pre 95 explorer...So I could be wrong....someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think I'm pretty close....Just an idea...Can't wait to see ya out there...that is if my truck stays in one piece to make it out there myself :)

I'm married and I know what the "look" is all about. Get as much lift as the budget allows for and get the tallest tires that will fit without interference. That will have to be good enough. Get rid of any plastic hanging off the bottom or Attica will do it for you, no charge.

Must haves: tow hooks front and back, so we can get your stuck butt out, and a cb so we can make fun of you, and double check the full coverage insurance and deductibles. That should cover it till the bug bites. We all look forward to running with you.

Pete, the truck will be fine if you don't let your mom keep driving it!

So, Splash! welcome to the Big World of Off Roading!!!!!!!!!!
and yeah! wifes are great. Mine complains a lot every time she gets into my rig but she does it just to tease me. Kids love it though.
Pete covered the mods for you so let me just add what's coming later. He mentioned a body lift, looks like Matt is working on one himself (he's the one with the 2001 Sport) so look for a big write up on the install. That and torsion twist plus add-a-leaf and/or warrior shackles is probably all you can do for almost nothing. Guys covered everything else. After that and your maiden trip to Attica I can assure you that you'd be itching for more!! Lockers and gears is what's next then and possibly a winch, brush guard and more lights and we can go on and on. Crazy world. Don't ever count what you spent on your rig though. It won't make your wife happy. Care to join us for a get together in February? We'll be meeting at Hooters. Plenty of rigs/mods/pretty women,,,,,,,,,, what? o yeah and fun! We might even discuss our Attica opener.

Alright, a get-to-gether in February would be great. I live in Round Lake Beach witch is a North North West suburb of Chi-town (20 min strait west of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. So all I would need is directions. I am going to ask my wife if we can afford the shackles this month so that I can get them put on. If she says yea, all I have to do is find a warm garage to put them and the twist on.
Next, everyone is talking about new tires or big tires. That is really going to be out of my budget for a while, so I'm wondering... my Sport has 245/75 R15 Dayton Timberlines and my wifes has 245/75 R15 Bridgestone Duellers (both are ATs). Which would be the better tire to have on untill I can afford BFGs?
Lastly, were would I mount tow hooks at? I saw some in the Performance Products cataloge that look good, but I have no idea where to mount them.

RFR2212
01-17-2001, 09:31 AM

Splash, if you search the archives you'll find more info than you need on everything, including tow hooks. The ones I bought were pure GM product that usually goes on their trucks. Check my web site for info, write-up and pictures on these. Also, tires are not that big of a deal. Watch For Sale or Trade forum for some great deals. Riffman just sold his set of 31X10.5 BFG's for $250.00 including rims!!!!!! You'll know all the tricks after you've been here for a while.

OK, I am siting here looking at all of the Attica pictures because I am putting a screensaver together and I am thinking,"This looks like so much fun!" Then I start looking at the trails and the Explorers and I start thinking "Can I hang?". The way money is flowing around here I am only going to be able to get the shackles next month and from there who knows. I am looking for a second job, but things are tight around here. I want to go to Attica, but I'm worried. I know I will not be able to afford new tires for a while, so that means I am going to have to run with the Bridgestone Duellers that are on it. All you guys have BFGs and I don't want to be the one that every one else gets to take turns pulling my butt out. Any $.02?

01-19-2001, 03:28 PM
hey Splash, do you think that all of us were already prepared when we went to Attica? not really. First time I went there off roading all I had on my rig were bigger tires. Dave was there with us twice in his complete "stock" truck. You might not be able to do a lot but look at Matt; all he's got on his 2001 Sport is torsion twist in the front and if I remember correctly add-a-leaf in a back and bigger tires and he went through Green trail with no big time problems. We all go crazy with mods after each run but that's simply because we want to do more. Everyone does it though whenever there's some extra money to spend. We are in for a while so don't try to get it all at once. It's a never ending story. And don't worry, there's nothing wrong with getting your ass out of a hole. Last time we went there every one of us needed that sooner or later. We were actually pulling each other through that part of the trail. Just be there and we'll figure everything there.

Darn, Darn, Darn twist my arm why don't you... I should have the torsion twist and shackles by the second or third week in february(I'm shooting for before Hooters). The next thing I think is the tow hooks and then a Safari Bar. Mean while I am making a "Run Kit" based on the list on this web page. Off this subject, my wife wants to know if anyone else is going to bring there families to the Hooters get together.

Hey, Fellow Illinoian here.

RFR2212, Gilson is right off Interstate 74 half way between Peoria and the Quad Cities. (Small town with a post office)

I'm sure you have heard of Galesburg.

I am in Tuscola, IL now. That is just south of Champaign.

Anyway, good to see there are many other explorers around. I would love to get together and try out the new lift and meats.

Big Dave, I went to WIU as well. Are you still down there?

Oh DON that rings a bell.

Sorry I could not remember which thread that was. It seems like we were talking with someone from Arizona???

I went to Moab once...mountain biking. That place is the coolest. Now that I have a truck I can't wait to go back.

Hopefully, we will get to see some good pictures this week of the "MECCA" of mountain biking and 4X4.

Guys, just wanted to give you a heads up, I consolidated the pics from attica today and got rid of the bad, duplicate, and fuzzy out of focus pictures. If you had your links to my page they won't work anymore.

SplashMan
01-21-2001, 09:34 PM
On that note, I have been working on screensavers for for each of the runs on the webpage with Rick's blessing. I have 13 done and am just waiting on the Truckhaven 2001 pics to do that one. I have been working on the "Attack on Attica" screensaver and I just want to make sure you guys don't mind if I use your pics. Most of the pics are coming from Kampy's pic page, but if you have some you want added just send them to Brian.Owens@cnet.navy.mil and I will put them in. The screensavers are going to be in zip and exe format. I can also put them on disk and if I get them done in time I can make a couple copies and bring them to the Hooters Run. Sound good? Just to let you know all these are free.

OK, I have four screensavers make. One for each of the runs and a big one that features all three runs. The big one isthe one that I am figuring everyone will want is 21mg with 132 pictures. It will take 17 disks to make one set of instalation disks. So I am going to make a set and then mail it to who ever wants it. From there you can mail it on to the next person that wants it. I recomend sending addresses over e-mail instead of posting, but that is up to you. Who evers address I get first will be the one to start the chain. If you want your own set you will have to wait for a little while for me to buy some disks. I would try and e-mail the zip fle to people, but 21meg is more than my system can handle. Maybe by Hooters I will have two or three copies.

Wow! Matt! 3 inches and what a differnece now. One thing though. You're now driving without the front bumper? scary. If I were you I would definatelly call Duff and ask them to make some kind of pre-runner bumper right away. They are still working on their own design for a winch bumper. Anyway, looks good. Brian, I sent you my address. I can also drop disks over so you can make another copy. One thing though. Let me know where I can dowload the small ones from or just simply e-mail those to me one by one. OK?

just think about the possibilities now Matt simply based on what you "did" without that lift!!!

I read the last 2 pages of this thread and it felt like I entered the twilight zone. Here you all barely new eachother, and Brian was a total newbie. Now the guy wants to do a huge lift, and is obsessed, just like me and everyone else. I get(sniff) teary eyed thinking of how I went out on a limb to go wheelin with a bunch of guys I met online. Wether you liked it or not you all taught me a ton, not to mention got my ass home. I check in daily to see what is next , how Pete's swap is coming together, or what Andre is selling. I think the biggest boost was when Andre sent me an axle shaft not even a week before Attica and I got my truck together at the last minute, well sort of. You are a great group, and I think from what I have seen my truck can hang and bang a lot better( what a difference 4-6 inches makes)
I want to see if anyone wants to do the Apple Valley farms run on the 17th of Aug. About 2 hours from me, and if anyone wants to come to LaCrosse on Thurs night I can put em up for the night and we can go from there friday morning, wether you already know me or not, I love to wheel with all the guys I have met.
The site is www.rpm4x4.com

Well, if you go back all the way back to the beginning you'll see how it all started.... Dave was the guy that reached out to others from Illinois and soon we decided to go on a run. After Attica our apetites grew much bigger so we had another run and then winter interfeared with our plans. If you'd like, you can go back to my page and see the pix and read a bit about that first run......... my truck wasn't even close to what it is today.....the only mod I had on were bigger tires (street 31X10.5 Wranglers). Look where it all got me? thanks to all these guys I have loaded a few thousand dollars into my truck which otherwise could of been just another grocery getter.......

don't you love this?

I am thinking about going to Ludington for the dunes over labor day weekend with the JewelBagger. I have family up there. Also, I am getting bored running the same trail everytime knowing exactly where I am going to get stuck. Now if one of you guys wants to let me drive one of your machines that is built up, that would be another story altogether. I would even pay your offroading fees for the day at the badlands. But I don't see that happening. I am thinking that we can have the meeting at the Forest Preserve near my house. Bring what you want to grill, we can sit down, talk shop have a softball game or something.

Kick it off at about noon. The Forest Preserve is on Chicago Ave just west of Thatcher Ave in River Forest. The entrance is on the North side of the street. (Right side if you are going away from the city if you are directionally challenged.) Let me know what everyone thinks about this. I may even be able to get a grill, but I think that they have the some there.

I will post this to the NOIEC board also.

yeah, that's right! I own a 98 Sport now (which is driven by my wife) and have bought myself a 98 Audi A4 Quattro Avant...... (that's a four wheel drive - I can't live without 4X4).

Soon, I'll start at the 98 Sport, little by little I'll just upgrade it to where it's suppose to be straight out of the factory.
15X8 rims and 31" tires, new set of rear leaf springs (real ones in place of the worthless mono leaf), add-a-leaf, TT and new set of shocks.......... my wife wants me to do it......... this truck bounces way too much.....sometimes driving on 72 going west of Barrington Rd. gives my a sick stomach. Also I want it to be more stable. Once on the highway I almost flipped it when a cabbie cut me off........ I was very close then to loosing it. Good thing I replaced Firestones.......

Yeah, I'm still around.....

Cool. I just bought a 4-wheel drive car too. It’s a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4. That’s right ladies, 300-horse power twin turbocharged all wheel drive, all wheel steering, active suspension, active aerodynamics and a big insurance tab! But I love it.
