I am thinking of buying a sports car. I wanna spend in the $20-$25 range and was thinking about possibly a COBRA. What do u all think and what would you buy if u were looking for a sports car?

Thanks,

Jordan

You would be lucky to get a cobra that cheap! If it's new anyway. I found a 95 Mazda RX-7 for 28000 with only 30000 miles on it, it was turbocharged. BUt for that cheap a new Mustang GT is about as far as you can get. Unless you want to look at the firebirds and trans ams.
If I was going to buy a sports car. I would buy a mustang saleen 281. The new ones come with their own supercharger from saleen. Not from paxton. The supercharger is built on to the engine. The one I looked at the sticker said 46000. But it was convertible. And had some other extra options. There isn't much to choose from at that price. You can get a used (1996-1998)cobra for around 27000 where I live.

Have you seen the new Honda S2000. Car-N-Driver did a test on it recently, ran it against the Porsche Boxter, BMW Z3, and Mercedes CLK. The Honda beats them all, best of all, it can be had for about $27k.

Check it out. If you want to buy a used sports car, check out the Mazda RX-7 twin turbo. My brother-in-law is selling his '94 for $16k. You can proably get one in your area in the same range. That's one screamer, but fairly impractical.

my neighbor has a honda S2000.
real quick acceleration, you can drive it up to around 7500 rpm!
i just dont like convertibles, otherwise it would be the perfect sports car.

I don't like those little sports cars, I'll stick with the bigger ones like Mustangs, and Ferrari's and those types. Anyway as far as a cobra goes you might just want to get a GT and supercharge it or look for probably a 96 or 97 cobra, for that price I've seen quite a few that are in excellent condition and have low miles.

yeah, my friend has a 97 cobra. that car is nice, but the exhaust is so loud. i dont know if that is how they come from the factory, or if the previous owner installed a new exhaust.
i like a quiet exhaust better. like in my 73 roadrunner, you could sneek up on somebody, then fly right past them.:)

How about a 3000GT VR-4? 0-60mpg in under 6 secs, 320bhp,twin-turbo 3.0 V6, AWD, AWS, selectable exhaust tone, selectable ride control.

You should be able to get a early ninty's Porsche 911 for that much. It might have high miles, but their always a chick magnet. That's what I would do with a big wad of money like that. :)

yeah, the 3000GT VR-4 is a great sports car. i love turbos.
i like the didge viper twin turbo (aftermarket) 850hp, and a cool body kit.

forward motion makes a turbo for my Daytona that will give it 525+ hp. that's crazy, my car is too light for that. i would only be able to drive straight.

Volkswagen GTi VR6. 2002 models come with 24v vr6 201hp or the 4cyl 1.8t with the Audi A4 computer at 180hp (will be advertised @170bhp). 4-motion (awd) is not avail in the states yet but this is a true drivers car which i highly recommend to everyone. =)

I'm getting an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro. With minor mods (including a stage 2 chip and exhaust) can go from 170 HP stock to 210 HP. with the all wheel drive and how light the car is... FAST! I like American cars but for a sports car, those German guys got it down pretty well. Brand new depending on the options and package you get, the price range is $23,000 - $30,000. That's in Southern California too.

nahh, dont do exhaust. just the garret chip, 3" downpipe and if you want, a blow off valve. just a reminder, Audi HATES HATES mods especially a chip. lets just say that changing your radio can void your warranty. out of all dealers they are the most picky about that stuff but german is the way to go! (O:o)===W===(o:O) <---- cant wait to get my VW!!

i actually have seriously been considering something similar: turbo charged beetle, im talkin one of the old ones. they make turbo kits for these things that are supposed to make 250 hp. 250hp in a car that weighs 2000 pounds(prolly down to 1700 after some lightening) equals 8lb per hp(2000) or 6.8lb per hp(1700) total cost of the kit is like 2grand and you can find the car (ok shape) for around 1 grand. 3 grand and it would prolly be a crazy fast car. just imagine the look on that z28ss drivers face when he gets spanked by a stock lookin "love bug"

yeah, i've seen drag strip beetles. but the ones i saw have porsche engines in them. the original beetles have air cooled engines, i dont think a turbo is good for that. the air that comes from the turbo will be hot, especially without an intercooler. i'm sure that it's been done plenty of times, but under such heat and stress i dont think the engine will last very long. it's a cool idea, but it might be better if you put a liquid cooled engine in.
cooler=more hp
also cooler= longer engine life:)

Today i went and i bought myself a car. Volkswagen Gti VR6. i am so impressed with this cars performance, sport and luxury. all honesty, its a blast to drive and a great all round sports car. i was on the higway in cruise at 90mph with the a/c cranked still getting an avg mpg in the mid-high 20's. quit hesitating and just go get one! everybody!

Jordan.. are you looking for a new or used car? That makes for two completely different ball games, price wise.

For example, 1998 Mustang Cobra for sale in my area about a month back.. good shape, decent mileage, red, I think it was if I remember right. The guy was asking $19k. Easily attainable, plus have extra cash to throw into mods that *could* get you to 400rwhp, if spent wisely.

New Cobra costs... $27k? I think, not sure. I'm not a huge Ford guy, GM turns my crank more often, with the exception of classic mustangs and of course, my explorer. :D

But let's boil this down ... what are you looking for? I mean, do you want lean handling, corner cutting, eye catching roadster, or do you want a muscle/pony car, ala mustang or f-body?

As for S2000, damn sweet cards, beautiful IMO. My friend has one and loves to cut the corners at 8,500rpm... :D Nice 6speed gearboxers, a healthy 240hp from the 4cylinder. only a 153ft-lb of torque, my only gripe. In other words, car excels moreso high end driving than being a stop-light warrior (low-end stuff). But, a little out of the price range you're looking for: new starts at $32k, not sure what used would be simply because this is their first model year here.

But anyways.. I guess I'm done for now

wow!! I am really suprised nobody suggested a TWIN TURBO MKIV TOYOTA SUPRA. 320 HP very easy to mod. do downpipe intake, exhaust, boost controller, and run a low 12 high 11 in the 1320. targa top leather interior cockpit like guages. car is so bad ass. oh yea and you will get almost any chick you want with it.

When you said "Cobra" I wasn't thinking Mustang (Must be my advanced age:rolleyes: ), I was thinking mid 60's Shelby Cobra 427. Now THAT's a sports car!!

REAL Cobra Picture!! (http://www.shelbyplace.com/photos_detail.asp?type=&model=cobra&year=cobra&count=22&total=51&from=)

yeah, those thigs were fast! a light car like that with so much power. $500,000+ for an original in very good condition.
with a price like that, i would rather buy a viper (and make it a 830+ hp twin turbo). there was one on ebay for sale, it was about $196K.

I would go with a 2001 mustang Gt Bullit, it is a Gt with out the spoiler with lots of aluminum accents and very limited, my local dealer has one priced at 27,900, a little less than the Cobra but much cheaper, and easier on the insurance too!

my dad has a 1969 mustang mach 1. it's an awesome car, but i'm still trying to convince him to restore it. the paint is faded and the interior should be redone (32 year old leather seats, enough said)
but he wants to keep it "original." for some reason he is against restoration. too bad, because that would be a great looking car with a new paint job and interior. oh well.

An excellent choice, nonetheless, but consider the logistics of it. Only 3600 twin turbo were sold in the U.S. from 1993-1998, a majority of those sold in the 1993 and 1994 models years. Makes for a very rare car, thus raising price. So much so that the only two TTs I've found anywhere near me for sale(once considered one myself) were in Atlanta. One was a 97, black, that was going for $33k.

The other was a 94, I think, silver or white? Low miles, great shape, and the kicker.... $28k.

Other than the damn price and rarity of those cars, amazing machines they are. Throw in the BPU kit (which includes downpipe, boost controller, intake, exhaust, etc.) that you can buy from any supra tuner, and be easily pushing 420-430rwhp.

Not bad at all.. fast cars with amazing potential. :D

Toyota is rumored to bring them back in '03 or '04 with a V8 derived from one of the Lexus' cars, not sure which.

Personally, (this is my opinion) I think they should just stick with the inline6 setup with some more tuning and bigger turbos, if not offer a single turbo setup. When I think of import, I don't think raw low-end V8 brawn, I think high-end 6cylinder or dare I say, 4cylinder. Just my opinion though.

that's a great car, claims over 600hp. but for over $75K and the reserve still isn't met, i dont think so.

sorry guys but mkiv supras arent that expensive you just need to know where to look. my boy just picked up a 1993.5 with 34k miles twin turbo mint condition for 17k. btw it is the antracite color which is a very very rare color for that year.
