This is pertaining to the previously mentioned topic about rolling explorer's, and how many seem to think that you gotta be stupid to roll an explorer. No, i dont think thats true, i gotta 94 pre-runner explorer and i beat the desert whenever i get a chance i dont care if im on my way home from school or 12 at night i love to haul ass jump and scare the shit out of my self. i even hope to race one day. But, i did roll my explorer about a week ago. it was in the mud, and i was playing as usual, (phoenix there isn't to much mud), so you play whenever it shows up. anyway i had just come out the other end of a mud pit when i was doin about 40-45 pitched it sideways to head bck through it, and as my truck was leaning its weight and turning i wacked a huge unforseeable rock and i had enough momentum that when i hit the rock it pitched my truck right over on my roof rack and spare tire. Also my extremely outragously expensive PIAA lights on top. this pissed me off to now other, after all i was just toying sround in the mud after college had got out and look what happened. it was an accident rare to its kind. but, anyone out there that thinks that they can chalk that up to stupidity, or bad driving, let me know, i'll tear you up off-road.

Sorry to hear about your rollover. I wouldn't necessarily chalk it up to bad driving or a bad vehicle or what. I think any vehicle will roll if it is high enough and you hit a rock at the right angle doing about 45 miles an hour. I realize the danger so when I go off-roading I will rarely even go over about 10 miles an hour, then again mine isn't exactly a "pre-runner" vehicle. Anytime I do go over 10 (like baja'ing a bit in one of the washes at Truckhaven) I am always sure I know exactly what rocks are where and if I can't safely see in front of me and around me then its time to slow down. My vehicle is too precious to risk a rollover just because going faster is more fun. Sorry to hear about your PIAA's though, if you'll be rolling it again you may want to get some cheaper lights http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif. PIAA's lifetime warranty doesn't cover damage from incidents like that unfortanetly.

mike,
One day I was playing around on a dirt hill.I wanted more of a thrill. I'd start from the top of the hill and get to the bottom and spin around.Needless to say I was digging ruts. The last time I hit a rut and over I went.It just seems like ever thing go's in slow motion.Busted out the right door glass.I try not to do that any more but it is sooo much fun.I would do it again but it cost to much money to fix.

Since we are all sitting around the camp fire telling of near death experiences I had mine as well drop my 2cents in. It was a cold and rainy night.....just kidding.
I was doing about 75-80 in my 92 5.0 on a country road. When, yep you guessed it, a deer jumped out in front on me. Looking back on it I should have hit the bastard but thinking I could miss him I swerved and went into a spin and fliped about 4 times before I hit and enbankment.

Moral of the story: BUCKEL UP

Ok, I guess its my turn. First, I'll say that I've never rolled anything but a bicycle (ouch). But I regularly got my Pinto up on 2 wheels and never knew it until someone I knew followed me one day. There was this tight turn I would take quite fast when I left work every day. It wasn't a very good road. The first part of the turn was banked properly, then the right side of the road rose up, putting me off-camber a bit. I would dive into the turn at about 40, and when the right side of the road rose up, I would counter steer a bit to the left to straighten out. It was always a bouncy turn, but I never felt as if my wheels left the ground. They were only up for a second or so, my friend tells me.

Now I did see a full sized Buick roll once. Not going very fast either, maybe 35-40 MPH. I don't know if they had a blowout or what, but they bumped the curb, and it must have yanked the wheel out of the driver's hands. The car got sideways, and rolled over onto its roof. So, anything can roll, I guess.

This is a good reason to keep all the loose stuff strapped down in back. Just think how it would feel to have that tool box land on your head.

James, I know about those deer. Last year, I had about 3 near misses with them critters. One leaped out in front of me and passed by so fast that I didn't have time to react. I swear, I must have missed him by less than a foot. Good thing too, I had my Contour. It probably would have landed in my lap.

I tend to play it safe in my explorer just for the money factor. I had a 71 mustang and was hauling down the freeway at about 75. The beast had the origonal suspension so it was very low to the ground. Well after all it was pretty old. The right front suspension arm broke from the frame..right at the weld. Guess what, I lost all my steering when into a spin. After three 360's and 12 rolls I learned that it doesn't matter what you drive it can be rolled. A few years later I had a old jeep wagoneer. Wheeling in that going down a rather steep hill I lost my brakes due to a rock that busted my main brake line. Wight + speed + crappy old jeep = 8 rolls. The funny thing is that every thing does go into slow motion. When I was in the mustang I remember the pack of ciggarets that I had on the dash never hit the roof nor the dash. Through every roll they stayed in in mid air. Everything was going so slow and with the shock of it all That is all I remember was the darm pack of smokes. That was the night I quit smokeing. Whent to cold broken turkey! My Explorer is much more top heavy so now when I go wheeling I am very carefull as to whats in front of me aswell as below me and how fast I am going. Speeding through mud is great don't me wrong. But I have now found the new love of Rock crawling. Less chance for me to roll and bust way to many parts. O'well....just had to share that all with you. I wish you all Safe wheeling and happy adventures! http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif
