The first thing to do is see if anyone has taken over your dad's old callsign (you can now buy old callsigns from the FCC). Look at the ARRL website for info (www.arrl.org). The second thing to do is study for the Ham test. You can't get the old call without first being licensed. You will get a different call, then you will be able to get your dads call (if it is still available). In order to use your Dad's old Heathkit for the HF frequencies, you will need to learn morse code. Most people nowadays get the "Technician" license first. This allows UHF and VHF priviledges but not HF frequencies(under 28MHZ). In order for this you must pass the Morse code test (being able to copy 5 words per minute). This is the "Technician Plus" license. This will allow some HF priviledges. Your local Radio Shack will have the study book for the exam. The ARRL website I noted above should help you with any questions. It's a great hobby to get into. My buddy has an HF radio in his Explorer and talks to people all over the world on his way to work. I have a VHF/UHF radio in my Explorer with a range of about 50 miles. My callsign is N2IIE

Ron,
Thanks very much for the reply.
I found out more in your post, than I did making numerous phone calls to the FCC! Unbelieveable.

I'm not (at this point in life) interested in operating the old Heathkit... probably needs work, anyway. Right now I just want to keep that old call sign in the family. I knew morse code when I was a kid... only thing I remember is SOS!

So I guess I can get the lowest level HAM liscence and go after the old call sign.

Thanks again,
Dave ('94 4.0 4wd Ranger)

The callsign you gave is issued to Edward Miller.

My father was into HAM radio, big time. I remember, as a little kid, helping him build a Heathkit "portable" HAM radio. I've still got this thing... it's got tubes and is huge! Enough of the nastalga..

I want to get liscenced with "his" call sign (w3qzj). Kind of a sentimental thing. Unfortunatly, the FCC has been of no assistance. Any suggestions??
