Not HAM related, but, I thought someone here would have some good input.
I have an '89 F250 and want to put a CB within reach. Putting it under the ash tray would require me to lean way down to get to the controls. I currently have a cheezy Radio Shack unit that is under the driver's side dash. It's in the way of my knee.
So, my thoughts are to go with one of the units that has the controls built into the mic. I've never been close to one of these units and I have some questions:
Where is the speaker?
If the speaker is in the mic, can I mount an external speaker?
Is the mic extremetly large, to house all the controls?
Can you recomend a particular unit?
Can you recomend a good antenna, and what type of mount? (I currently have a passive, through the glass, antenna)
Thanks for ANY input!
Dave

Hi Car 36,
Cobra has a model 75 ST. The speaker is in the mic and it is not too big at all. GJarrett has one and says he likes it very much. I am thinking about getting one for the wifes new car. I have a Cobra 29ntST, it works good, but it's too big. The only place I could find to mount it was on the right hand side of the console. Not a bad place to mount it, just doesn't look that great. http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/frown.gif As far as antennas go, top load antennas(Firestick) are better than bottom load antenna(Wilson 1000), and cheaper too! The glass mount (cell phone looking) antennas are JUNK! I have a Wilson 1000, which is a good antenna, but the Firestick "Firefly" is better and cheaper too. The best way to mount is through the roof, but if you don't want to put holes in your Explorer, you can do what most of us do and use a magnetic mount, and run the coax in through the cargo door. I tyraped the coax to the roof rack.
Hope this helps. http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif If you would like more info you can do a show topics for the last 100 days on this forum and there are some links to information about antennas and some other good stuff. http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Car 36,
Try this link, Bill's 2-Way. A new in box Cobra75wxst for $91.48. A factory refurbished from the Cobra store is $114.00, also you can get a firestick in a 3ft length for $13.00. I don't know how much for the mount.Up on the top of the page is the toll free number or down at the bottom of the page is the online order form. The reason I am listing him is I have done business with him before, and his prices are very good.
Hope this helps. http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ray,
My F250 already has a hole in the roof for a commercial radio antenna (previous owner). I know that the highest, largest flat surface is the place to mount an antenna (best ground plane?) I just don't like the looks of a huge antenna poking out the top. I'll probably put it up there, anyway. I will eventually have a HAM radio antenna to mount somewhere, also.
Any suggestions where I can get a Cobra 75 ST.
Thanks,
Dave

Cool. Thanks for the link. Probably place my order tomarrow. That Firestick's pretty good too, huh?
