I just figured I should tell the world that I bought this GPS. I thought this would be the closest forum to post to. Pretty sweet so far from what I have seen! I would like to find out where people have these mounted in their Explorers. Also if anyone knows of good sites that sell mounting systems let me know.

Thanks!

I mounted mine on the steering column. I used their mobile mounting bracket which allows you to control the angle of the display. Even though it's mounted pretty low, the stock antenna has never failed to pick up the satellites.

I also have the wiring harness which wires into the trucks electrical system.

I have no trouble reading hte stock gauges and the visibility of the GPS is outstanding.

I have a Motorola, salvaged from a Caddy, which has no Display and uses an external antenna. I mounted the antenna on a Radio Shaft radar detector bracket and put it uo behind the rear view mirror. Stashed the Motorola guts, which are in a package about the size of a Marlboro box, behind the Glove Compartment insert, bringing the RS-232 cable out below.

A dilapidated Toshiba laptop serves as the Display Head and runs a variety of navigation, surveying and APRS (ham radio) software and lives on a Jotto Desk mounted to the floor.

I can always acquire 8 satellites, even through the glass, with an un-amplified antenna.

If you buy the Jotto Desk, get one of the models that has a Quick Disconnect, lest you find yourself crusing the pawnshops trying to find the laptop you USED to have in your 'Splorer.

We carry the small Garmins aboard the ships upon I am employed. I have rigged several with the data/power cables from GPS MAN, and find that their performance with Civilan GPS is on a par with the units we use which are made for the Maritime trade.

RE: Callsign

Previous callsign was AB7GF, which left LOTS of opportunities for Mischief. Got W7LV at the opening of Gate 2, and found that no one had ever held it before.

A Fun Callsign! And, handy, living in Fun City.

Presently planning a Florida - LV cross country with a new ICOM 706.
