Hey are the crown vic rims the exact same size as ours, cause i was thinkin of gettin a set but i have bigger tires i was just wondering if they were the same offset

a ton of Crown Vic guys use the Explorer alloy five spoke rims because they are cheaper than the original Crown Vic sport five spoke aluminum rims.

I put the steelies on the Explorer because my family has 3 Crown Vics in the household so if anybody gets a flat its much easier and cheaper to replace.

the overall package makes the truck lower I think the original explorer wheel/tire combo is 225/75R15 and the Crown Vic is 225/60R16 the explorer rims are about an inch taller but the vic wheels are about an inch wider.

they fit just fine, no spacers.

i live in farmingdale which is a small town in the middle of howell. so i know the area very well. i have not seen a shop dedicated to just 4x4. on Rt.9 there is a pep boys. nothing really around here i think.
the 2 places that i used to off road at are basically dead. the cops decided to buy quads and patrol those areas. when i see my friend with his jeep i will ask him if any other spots are open around here. i will also ask him about shops since he is heavy into 4 wheeling.

I go to wharton state forest to wheel alot, some good stuff there. Right off Rt. 206. Just make sure you stay on trails and don't just go mashing through the woods.

9/2006: Now moving to Bloomfield/Montclair from Northern Virginia. Just had a Jasper transmission installed in my 1998 Sport 4x4. Previously drove a 1994 4x2 Sport and a 1992 Mazda 4x2 Navajo. Both were purchased new. Explorers rule. :-)

Hey Howell, Brick, and Farmingdale guys I live right here in Wall, NJ. If you are looking for shops around here there is are a bunch on Route 35 in the Neptune area, including an Autozone that's always good for cheap OEM parts.

In terms of offroading spots, Forked River, which is around exit 70 something, has a huge amount of open terrain with all types of obstacles to have fun on.

yea.... and i did my first body lift by myself with air tools and it took me 28 STRAIGHT hours of work ( i couldnt stop because i needed my vehicle )

you wanna know how long the 2nd body lift took on my friends truck? less than 8 hours. i wonder how long the 3rd will take :p:

but it sounds like we got some jersey guys with experience that are willing to help.. i bet we can knock it out in 5hrs- leavin time for burgers and beer :D

I'd say mine took 28 hours, no maybe 10. 8 hrs the first day, 2 to button it up. The biggest pain for me was the radiator supports. And that one frozen bolt! But yeah, beer and a few hours, it'll be done!

i had a hard time drilling out the rear bumper brackets to get it to sit right. im not sure about 1996 models.. but they didnt make a kit for my 1998, so i basically bought a kit for a 94 and fabbed everything else- including going to a hardware store for new bolts (which reminds me, i had to DRILL OUT EVERY BUSHING with a 1/2" bit... that was a PITA too, especially being alone because the bushing would start spinning)

You guys all rock. Glad to know I have a some willing people nearby should it turn into a giant shitastrophe. My experience level is minimal, at best. The only things I've done are changing my oil, installing my KKM, and my Rancho shocks. So I'm a bit apprehensive about the whole process. Looking forward to the experience though - best way to learn.

I'll definately post updates when I get to it - should be sometime in early June.

Heres the "work" I done so far:

First let me say i bought this thing new for my ex in 91- Since then it has been thouroughly neglected passed down thru 3 of my 5 kids

Always liked the way it looked (white Eddie Bauer) but had my own toys.

4wd didnt work in 5 years Went thru rotors broken into rust on rockers turned from white to yellow brown just used by son for 2 jobs and commute to college

Nursed it for a year with limping trans- kept adding trans additives- worked until just quit- lots of revs, truck just sat there

So had trans rebuilt $1900. 00 ouch Son used it until front rotors were trashed, and other son was selling his own EX a california car for we dry docked the 91 and young son got olders 94 limited.

Put 91 on Craigs list for 500 bucks- Body still nice- needs brakes newer tires on alloy rims- for 5 bills you cant go wrong...

Real cheapskates called about it- Ill give you 2 3 or 4.. Im thinkin man I just put $1900.00 in to trans, sorry i dont need the money just the space...


ANYWAY , sold my 01 Duramax Ally for a balls out work /dump truck The duramax i could bring home and park in front of my house, the dump truck i couldnt... My other car is a C6 vette, and that dont get drivin in the rain...


So I give the X another look- hell its paid for, and its 4wd, (if i could get it to work) its got nice rims, and except for a foot of rusted rockers and a few dings bodys pretty good. Interior and glass were always good, daughter had glass tinted so its blacked out and looks cool.

All of a sudden I saw potential with this truck. Since i restore old cars, i now saw this as just another project, low buget beater till i pay off my Vette.

Asked my friends on a camaro site where to go, guy pointed me here..

So... Now im excited- the yellow paint I knew could be brought up by washing it with Krud Kutter, a cleaner from Home Depot. Makes the white factory new. But first i had to work on the brakes..

So-and ill just go down the line of whats been done:

bought new rotors, pads and calipers, along with front bearings, and installed

then got new mile marker hubs and installed.

then rebuilt shift motor, wala ! 4wd works again

ordered new dynomax cat back exhaust and installed good sound now

RA bushings...Hmmmm read this site and ordered the parts $11.88 for brackets, and spent a day and a half on my back in 5 degree weather outside but comfortable in my garage with space heater new urethane bushings DONE

Then fixed all bad bulbs, and small items like headlamp pull that was broke..

Ordered new war's and AAl, and Daystar 2" lift, and put them on..

then took out Mach radio/CD and at least got lighting to work on it, still no sound..

Then replaced rear bumper with new no hole one..

Then took off front air dam tupperware and pushed front bumper all the way up to tighten look up front, changed front licence bracket so it is up in front of bumper instead of hanging below it..

Then attacked ruted rockers, cut away rust and rivited in thick bent aluminum, and bondoed and sanded it, primed and awaiting nice day to spray bomb it..

Then bent up entire pinch weld along rocker to clean up bottom and give appearance of even higher lift...

Then took off front grill and painted the argent insert semi black, along with the rear back window post things..

then installed a JC whitney front brush guard, without headlight guards, in black,

along with new KC Daylighters mounted on the brush guard,

and if it didnt snow today would have installed my tow hooks,

and finally waiting for my new Rough Country 2" lift front and rear shocks along with my new 1.5" wheel spacers and camber adjusters to arrive in mail, shocks probably tomorrow spacers eno of the month,

And that just leaves the installation of my Surco roof rack, a set of 31 or 2 Mudders, and lastly, the biggest project of all, replacing the valve cover gaskets and possibly the head gasket.

I got parts off of sk1er17 (front fenders) when he went to glass fenders (before he went Cheby - took you long enough...lol). Mine sat for 3 years in the driveway waiting for a revival - which it got in Feb this year after I got back from Iraq.

Now I just need to get rid of the front end squeak.....and if anyone has a laptop scanner so I can check the O2's and anything else electronic....

I'm a PRO at dropping the fuel tank and changing the fuel pump - I think I can be in it start to finish in an hour....:eek:

I see there are some people pretty local - Beachwood - lakewood.. anyone esle from Ocean county..there are a few fire trials around here off of rt539 and such that would be nice for mud runs.. not really big rocks or anything..

I also used to live in Newton, which is in Sussex county.. have contimplated moving back there.

I'm trading in my MA plates for Yellow NJ ones, which means I need to go through inspection.

Does anyone have any tips? Which stations to go to? And what's the deal with the private inspection stations vs the state ones?

They made me take off the inner part of my grill guard that goes over the lights - the thin horizontal bars in front of the headlights. I also had to remove my taillight guards or they wouldn't pass me. :rolleyes:

Well the one in Freehold I have been to many times and most of the time I drive right in and they take care of it or at most there was one car in front of me, secondly just make sure you check and double check everything, lights, wipers, horn, windows. its pays to not have to drive there twice!!

He was in an accident a while back and his wheels got messed up, so we tossed on my buddies 2003 wheels... but they're a different backspace and rub on his LCA's. Tires still on. They're BFG AT's, but have very little tread left. I mean, they're ok, but you'd have to get new ones soon.

we are both 20 and it cost me about a quater tank of gas as well to go from Point Pleasant to Manalapan and back, pending on if i don't burn oil(most times i don't) and I'm suprised im getting good gas mileage with 206K on the engine and tranny. and if you do drive around and see my broke ass truck just honk, the full front end is primer except for a green stripe and the back of the truck is gray and black with some primer spots and i dont have cross bars on my roof rack. got Aim? mine is Version0069

Use a local garage who's a "Private Inspection Facility." They can usually fix the problem and then "re-inspect" it all at once.

well truck is in dire need of a tune up but i havent had the time to do it as well as crazy ass weather ,

the main issues are exhaust leak and somethin happened with previous owner i had to rewire the headlights, i tried lookin for the proper relay for them tested all the relays everythin seemed fine, but only the highbeams worked, funny part is now if i activate my highs the lows stay on regardless. this truck has many issues but for the most part its a bunch of small issues, but will become expensive if fixed all at once. and i dont hav ethat kinda cash for that, not to mentio i still have to tear the motor apart on my nissan as well

I've got the gears, master kit, axle bearings/seals, and u joints. I don't have the gears here since it's a 4.88 kinda oddball but I can get those in for ya no problem for a decent price (Yukon). Explorer to a silverado???

Yea man... Looked at ford but they wouldn't budge on price and I didn't like the styling of the dodges.

The rear I have came from a 1997. Yukon has two master install kits for that year and I believe the difference is the pinion seal.. Do you know what I'm talkin about or could I bring in my seal to compare?

Maybe I see her, what does she drive? 1997 all gm 8.6's are the same. 1999 is a cutoff of early or late but I've never seen a different 97. You can bring the seal in if you come in for the hell of it but I've never seen a different one. I've seen a different bearing for a GM Eaton posi but nothing else.

She used to drive a silver 4 door Cherokee. Now she drives a blue 4 door subaru legacy sedan.

And I'm talking about the GM 9.5 rear axle, not the 8.6. For the 9.5 they have two kits as follows:
YK GM9.5-A. 79 to 97
YK GM9.5-B. 97 to 03

Since I have a rear out of a 97 I'm not sure which kit ill need...

Wow I'm retarted. I don't know why I started thinking 8.6. Our 9.5 master kit comes with both seals so there is no issues when we sell them to someone.

The ranger station is on your left side right before the road construction on Rt 206. The correct name is Wharton State Forest Ranger Station.

Nice. that thing should tear! Im in the process of saving for some 31's and a 3" body lift. also looking into the whole coil spacer shackle 2" lift as well. But im still going out whenever i have enough gas. It would be cool to get a bunch of X's together for a trip. If we get enough intrest we should plan something out.

Just passed "Altered Vehicle Height" inspection at Asbury Park... 2 hours with the inspector (nice guy, had never seen a lifted Mounty before!) but the Mountanieer passed fine.

FYI, they want the rear mudflaps going to the lower edge of the rim now!

Well I've replaced explorer transmissions before...haha I blew my own trans this past year. Load it up with transmission no-leak if you think it's dying and take it out anyway. If it's gonna go, it's gonna go.

Yes, It will fit. I did this swap on my '94 limited.

$300 for everything.
I have (all from a '94 Ranger 4.0l 4x4):
trans ( shifter needs rebuild, kits about $20 on ebay)
flywheel and bolts
clutch (used, but worked when I drove the truck up onto the trailer, the only time I drove it)
block plate
starter
trans harness
pedals
94 ranger computer (4.0l 5spd. like i said, i dont know if it will work)
master and slave (but I ALWAYS recommend replacing these)
manual column ( no auto shifter on it, but its got the stupid little key release button)

Other stuff I may have, have to look:
clutch pedal switch
shifter handle and knob
shifter boot
PRNDL delete panel (to replace the gear indicator in cluster)

Ok. Ill let you know. I think me and my friend are buying an explorer and swapping the trans and parting out the rest though. So well see. But thanks alot for the offer. I appreciate it either way.

There are some times that I really need it both up front and in back. Like when the FD boys dared me to climb a soft melting big pile of snow a couple weeks ago!

Not so much any more. I have a Sub now for DD. The Ex is used for "special occasions" and off roading pretty much. But I'd be driving where ever we're wheelin so...I love the aussie up front tho. I've got my aussie in the rear and I've driven in nasty rain storms, the snow, and it all. I've had absolutely no problems. I've slid in the rain more with an open diff than with my aussie. Honestly...selectable lockers are over-rated. I have a buddy who has a 8" lifted rock crawling cherokee and it runs with two aussie lockers and he does proffessional competitions and drives it daily...he runs with the best and has no problems doing normal stuff.

That is really cool to hear. I'm gonna have to slap one in the rear this spring or summer! Thanx!

I'm actually sad I'm loosing my aussie with the SAS. I'm going to be getting two probably, one for the 9" and one for the D44. I'm not a huge fan of selectable lockers, as said, and the aussie unlocks/locks smooth enough to not even bother me. Yeah, at low speed when backing/turning out of a parking spot if you have the window down you can hear "clickclickclickclick" as it unlocks, but hell, that just proves that it's doing it's job.

I thought about just throwing a $250 Aussie in the front, but I worry about snappin CVs

what do you guys feel is better for wheeling and getting thru more? locker in the front or the back? i am definitely getting at least one this month, but not sure which i should get? mine is a dd but i dont mind clicking lol

When I'm done my SAS I'll have all of my current parts for sale. Aussie Locked 8.8 with 3.27 gears, all my lift parts, etc.

definitely let me know, i am very interested as long as you dont have the drop plate design! where is the cheapest place to get an aussie locker?

I must say, when in 4 lo, that sucker pulls. I can't remember which way, I think it's to the left. I'm assuming it's because of the unequal length shafts? I think it pulls right. Not too hard, but if you let go of the wheel it'll bring you where it wants to go, rather than returning to center. 4hi, not really noticeable, prob'ly because the axle disconnect is not engaging except when needed.

great thanks man! i think i may get a rear this week and a front next month, i decided the lockers are way more important then a lift right now. 6" of lift does no good with open diff's lol. whats the best site to order an aussie

You are so right. We all want to look cool w/ big explorers and big mud tires, but to tell the truth, two lockers would beat the crap out of any lifted mud tired rig running open diffs! So true! All bark and no bite, literally!!

actually i think you have the ifs standard cut front 35, i have the ttb reverse cut 35

yea i cant make it this weekend, i just swapped my transmissions, and i am moving into my new shop this weekend, so im gonna have a nice warm shop to fix up the truck. i need to get a new front differental too, the pinion bearing is wiped, and so is the carrier bearings :mad:

Last time I was @ Wharton, which was like 06, it seemed like a lot of the good trails were closed. I might be down for this meet but I don't know if I'd wheel my truck.

Yeah, it'll be fun for you guys to come to wharton with us. I've got some guys who know the park really well, know all the good trails and climbing hills/spots, plus the good mud like 1/4 mile and such. And 1/4 mile isn't too bad, I did it all in a stock explorer with no 4x4 and had no problems. I mightve got stuck more than some, but never any damage or mechanical issues because of it.

That sand is probably worse than the mud, no lie. I got stuck there right after I had lifted and locked. Imagine how embarassing that was, I was getting pulled out by a K5 and we hadn't even gotten to the mud yet.

Of course, I later learned that my hubs were toast and my trans was dying so I cut myself some slack haha.

I should've aired down but didn't. I was following a group..I got out of that twice and then got stuck a third time and had to get yanked out.

Yeah. I hear ya. Hopefully I'll be SAS'd by the feb trip, depending on how $$ goes. Still need to get shocks and my radius arms/crossmember.

My X is out of commision for now. I dont think i will be replacing the tranny. Im gunna try and sell it come june for 500 or 600 hopefully. Then use the 3000 im getting for grad and the 500 to buy a 2nd gen. Then ill be good again. Its a little ways away but oh well. Could be worse.

Was it getting rusty? Mine is, and now I'm wondering how much longer it'll last. Rocker panels I'll replace, but core support, and floor pans? I'm thinkin when it gets to that stage I'll be looking for a better one. Heck maybe even a 4wheel independent suspension one and see what can be done to off road them! Or dare I say, get a j@@p?
