View Full Version : Deciding on a Major?
IAmTodd 11-13-2004, 08:31 PM I'm having some toruble deciding on a major. I origionally was set on a Compute Science major. But right now I'm having second thoughts on it. I'm not sure if its for me. Considered engineering, but I'm not sure I'm smart enough. I've always liked math, so accounting is always a possiblility. My sis is one, so I could always get help from her. I'm just confused right now, And I know alot of you edumacated people on here can help me find the light. Thanks guys!
xmodster3o3 11-13-2004, 09:52 PM I got the same problem. I wish Dr. Phill owned an explorer.

hahahahahahah
i suggest talking to people who are out in the real world doing the job you think you want to do and see what its all about....and then jsut sit down and try to imagine what you would like to do for the rest of your life while having a good time doing it.
EBInterceptor 11-13-2004, 10:41 PM I've realized with career fairs (specifically criminal justice) is that few people actually seem to enjoy their jobs. These people are the recruiters and they don't even seem to care about their jobs. The people that actually talked to me were the US Border Patrol agents, and that's what I'm looking to do now. My uncle is a police officer and what he always said was "Get a bachelors in something you enjoy, get a masters in something you can make money" With both those you're set. My dad is a CPA and also a CFO for the company he works for and you can make a lot of money in accounting. My brother was computer science until he did an internship and realized that he hated his work and now wants to be a high school math teacher/coach. It's not so much about what you're good at, you can learn that stuff, it's what you really enjoy. I'm criminal justice and have decided my major a long time ago, but have kind of changed what agency I want to work for eventually. There is nothing worse than going into work and not enjoying what you do. I work in a restaurant, and I would get my a$$ handed to me every night, be glad to be done but still would come into work the next day ready to do it all over again. I don't want to to do it as a career, but the same attitude, you need to find something you enjoy.
CodePoet 11-13-2004, 11:11 PM I just got a degree in computer science. So far it's been very difficult to find a job that doesn't require 4-10 years of experience...just finding a job in general it seems. Take what I say with a certain grain of salt since i am frustrated at this point. Remember, MANY jobs have been shipped overseas, that means your going to be dealing with everyone whos out of a job, and all those just comming out of school. Make sure your school has a placement office that does more than just give you names, and actually works to find you a job...mine doesn't, I sometimes regret going to Indiana University very much, the best thing that came of it was my fiance who means the world to me.
But i'm just frustrated right now, don't go by what I say. If you are in school right now, dont' think you HAVE to pick a major right away, take a semester of the general courses that'll go towards any major. While your doing that think about what you really want to do, ask yourself if you can see yourself doing this for 40 + years. It's a daunting task i know...I went through 3 majors before settling on CS, dont' do this lol. We can't tell you what to go for, that's up to you. This is one of those decisions that you have to take a long hard look at yourself and your dreams to find an answer. I'm just trying to tell you what I as a new grad myself found during my tenure in college.
By the way. DONT' EVER THINK YOUR NOT SMART ENOUGH FOR A MAJOR! My advisors said I wouldn't cut it in comptuer science cause I didn't receive a super great mark in one math course, i actually found that I am better at more advanced course lol. Granted I had to work very hard but guess what...i did it and now i know that I can! In the future I would actually like to go back to school for mechanical engineering.
Do what you like...don't let anyone tell you you can't, and if they do...prove them wrong, even if that person is you.
Good luck

MONMIX 11-14-2004, 08:26 PM A good thought is to look in the want ad's to see what the hot market is and what wages they are getting.
A degree sucks ass if the market is over crowded.
An over croweded market means less comptitive wages.
Less competitive wages means less toys for your Explorer :)
frat guy 11-15-2004, 12:06 AM check out some classes in all areas. enroll in some, and you can even just go sit in on some lecture that you are not enrolled in just to check it out. make sure that whatever major you pick you like those classes. life is so much more fun when you are actually having fun going to class. like many of the others have said, do something you like. i have been in all of the classes from music to the biological sciences. then i found law. seriously, make sure you are doing something you really like as for your years in school and your years after. explore everything
glfredrick 11-15-2004, 10:59 AM Here's a suggestion - why not just get a general education instead of some specific major. Most people discover that their major didn't really help them all that much anyway - it was having the degree that opened the doors.

I am not so nuts about the above idea.
I got a dergree in accountancy. I am 2 months from being a CPA in only 3 years or working.
There is not a ton of money in public accounting, but once you get licensed, you can pretty much do anything in the business field.
If I were you I would get a degree in a business related field (i'm biased of course). But here is how I look at it. If I get tired of public accounting, I can go into accounting in the private sector. If I get tired of that, I can get some managerial type job. There are tons of business related jobs that are in different fields.
Engineering, I don't know if you can change jobs and be related to different fields like you could with a business degree.
Good luck. I changed my major 3 times before setting on accounting.
Really, there isn't all that much math. We have 10-keys. ;)

What are you taking in college right now? What are you planning on opening?
As of right now I'm going into Computer Science and probably majoring is something dealing with business.
MONMIX 11-15-2004, 07:18 PM Owning your own business,,,,,,,,,
DO NOT make that descision lightly.
I owned a business for 11 years.
It is a truly awesome, amazing experiance, but it comes with a hefty price.
You need to be prepared for a huge sacrafice of money and time.
Some times it pays off some times it does not.
sncwfo99 11-16-2004, 07:06 PM Like everyone else has said think about what you really want to do. I went to college for a short time after HS. I quickly found out that college wasn't for me. College didn't offer any coures for what I was interested in. I wouldn't change my decision for anything, I'm doing what I enjoy and making good money at it. Think things through and talk to people that are in fields that you have an interest in.

IAmTodd 11-16-2004, 08:45 PM I've done some research about Computer Engineering and it gets down into the circuitry of the motherboard and the design of CPUs and thats definetly not for me. As for right now, I'm going to stick with computer science and if I don't like it at first, I'm going to switch. I think I definetly want to get my teaching degree also(my mom is going to kill me for that one).

score another for the future poor of america ;)
<-------------teaching major
Firefighter 11-16-2004, 09:35 PM Yea, I didn't really know what computer engineers do. A lot of my friends aren't sure about their major either, and some try not to think about it, figuring if they wait they can change it later. I sorta knew what I was into a long time ago, and I think its the only thing I'd enjoy. I have worked as a mechanics assistant, and thats definately not something for me. I definately don't want to spend my life working on everybody else's crap. It seems like you have to get a good job, or your gonna get screwed. My sister is a teacher, and she pretty much completely depends on her husband. Where she lives, there aren't many teaching jobs available. I have had the experience of working 50-60+ hours per summer at crappy jobs doing hard work. The people I worked with were always saying to go to college and get a good paying job, don't end up like us. The way I see it, work real hard in school for 4 or 5 years, get a good job, and your set in the money department. If you learn a lot in school, you might just like it because you'll be good at it. Oh yea, and if you want to teach, be a professor, then you get paid good to teach. Good luck with your decision.

EBInterceptor 11-16-2004, 09:38 PM At my University we don't even have a gen ed degree offered. Or arts and humanities or whatever it is. Go criminal justice.
Firefighter 11-16-2004, 09:44 PM On of my friends from high school is majoring in criminal justice. He really likes it. His brother is a police officer too, so he gets to ride along every once and a while and usually has a lot of fun. That wouldn't be a bad job, unless you have to shoot somebody, or something like that.
EBInterceptor 11-17-2004, 12:40 AM That wouldn't be a bad job, unless you have to shoot somebody, or something like that.
I guess it all depends on who you are. I think being shot would be worse, if it's my life vs. theirs....I want to be the one who walks away.

Yea, definately. I just meant if there was a situation where sombody was getting a little out of control, and you weren't completely sure. There's probably been situations like that where a guy may or may not be armed, but somebody else could get hurt, and your justified to shoot. If it turns out it was somebody unarmed, a kid, or something like that, I would probably feel bad. I agree with you 100% though, we were just talking about different situations.
frickea86 11-17-2004, 10:06 AM Hey guy, id say go with what one of ur hobby's are, which is the computer Field, if you don't like it you always have the math to fall back on. If you graduate a CS major u automatically are a minor in Mathematics. The neat thing though with even being a math major if thats what you want to do or become a teacher, the first year your right next the cs majors, you have to take all the fun maths that u see me taking now. Id say hang in their don't get to worried about it, they have a lot of programs to help you out. The light will come to you.....laterz...see you up here this weekend...
Hope that helps some.....good luck
maresca 11-17-2004, 08:56 PM i didnt even start going to college yet. i recently got accepted to a computer school specifically for computers. ill graduate with a bachelors in comp science in two years. i know its for me because i took three years of computer programming and a cisco networking course in high school. it's a hobby and its what i like to do. im a nerd at heart lol. if its what you like to do also, stick with it. people have been telling me the "jobs being outsourced" and "i cant find a job" routine for years. But its what i like to do. You can measure a salary, but you cant put a price on happiness.
