View Full Version : whats a good winch?
wannabe4x4 11-14-2004, 01:42 PM i would like to purchase a winch to mount on my front brush gaurd via a custom plate or cage. I can possibly get most winches at cost thru my buddies shop. Any ideas on a faily mid level winch would be great. Thanks!
Brian1 11-14-2004, 02:02 PM I would go with a Warn. Mid level would be something like a m8000 or m9000.
You're not going to mount a winch no a non winch brushgaurd with out some pretty heavy fabbing. You're better off going with a front reciever and mounting the winch to that. Anything from Warn is good, and shorten your signature, 6 lines max.
wannabe4x4 11-14-2004, 05:20 PM thanx for the info. i know its better to mount with a receiver, but i was plannin on fabbin somethin and STILL USING my brush gaurd. Sorry bout the sig too i just copied the one i use on ORR. And dont get pissy but so far i havent been to happy with how people are on this forum. Never had a problem on ORR, mayb ill just stay over there :(
Blee1099 11-14-2004, 06:06 PM Welcome to the site.. Usually Saturday & Sundays are the least active days on here.. In regards to the winch, you definately can't go wrong with Warn.. Then again the other major makers like Ramsey & MileMarker would also suffice. You can get a Trans4mer grille guard for the winch.. I've also been pondering the idea of trying to modify a grille guard so a winch could mount on it and be strong enough.. So far after reading & getting some insight from some offroad buggy makers, they suggested beefing up the light bar plate with 3/8" steel plate and then boxing it in with some square or round tubing so it is re-inforced.
ExplorerSportNu 11-14-2004, 07:02 PM Yup definately go warn, I have a X8000I and am currently in the process of mounting on my x, I think I'm doing something close to you mounting the winch right above the bottom bar of the brush gaurd with the fairlead looking like its sitting on the bottom bar but in actuality its mounted to a front hitch reciever mounted upside down to the frame with a modified winch plate welded to a 1" piece of steel that is welded on top of the front hitch receiver and the winch mounting plate  but it looks GOOD ;)

I dunno, I figured it being in the rules when you registered was enough. He gave you advice but you whine about him letting you know about a rule. He didn't do it in a pissy manner. He just let you know. Simple. If you're happier over then I guess that's the way it is. Sounds like it based on this from another forum...
"Hey gang, i just subscribed to a explorer forum called "serious explorations" it looks just like this great site, but one difference........They are total AHOLES over there. I hope nobody from here ever acts like these jerks. I asked a simple winch ?'s and this guy treats me like a total idiot.....ORR 4 LIFE! i luv this site, keep it up guys! and i hope some of yea over here know some things bout exploders, cuz im not goin over there again! sorry for venting guys, hope didint offend anyone here"
BTW.. Good luck with your winch. Get a local 4x4 shop to add a plate to it and beef up the mounts. Shouldn't be that tough.
So Doug told you to trim your sig (which is a rule), and all of us are a bunch of aholes?
Geez, how about giving the place a chance before going off the deep end.
A-hole? I havent even come close. go get yourself a tissue and cry, man i wasn't even being critical of you. damn whiners.. There now you got something go back and whine about on ORR.

LMAO and thats being a A-Hole? So are we not allowed to inform you of the rules? Now your just asking for it since you pissed on this site. :fire:
Reminds me of my old job, I'm so glad I don't have to deal with the general public any more.

Yeah I didn't see that before either or I would have obvisouly shared my winch advice with someone a lil more deserving ;)
wannabe4x4 11-15-2004, 05:16 PM listen i made a comment based on my response from someone about me making my own winch mount......ok my bad i just dont think people should be so judgemental.....then i go and stick my foot in my mouth and say ur a bunch of you know whats......SORRY BAD DAY 4 RYAN!!!! and i spent a good 3 hrs lookin at a hella post and replys here and it seems like some people have nuthn but crap to say to people.....my 2 cents......again im sorry for bein a little bitch. ill keep readin this forum but i think ill ban myself 4 posting. 94ZebraRanger 12-05-2004, 03:59 PM I have had bad word on ORR, I haven't posted there since I traded my ranger for my Ex. Most of the people there only do prerunners and have no compasion for us 4 wheelers.
Getting back to the post at hand, I have had a warn winch on my 86 Ranger. Loved It. I will be getting a warn for my new project, possibley a 12000.
