I have an 01 XLT 4x4, and have a question about the front drive. Are the hubs supposed to always be engaged? I was doing an oil change and had the front end jacked up, and noticed that turning the front wheels makes the front drive shaft turn as well. Is it supposed to be like this?

Yes.

The '01 (and all other stock Gen II Explorers) has no disconnect hubs like you would have on an older 4x4. The axleshafts are splined directly into the hubs so that the axleshafts spin all the time.

My MPG thanks Ford for that decision....
