Because my fuel gauge is broken! The dag on thang is stuck on E! I tried the low budget approach to repair the problem (banging on the dash) but nothing. Anyone have any ideas? I guess the next step is to rip the dashboard out, huh?

Chances are it has nothing to do w/ the dash, but the sensor in the tank. Which means to replace it you or the shop will have to drop the tank.

Could be a number of things.. a bad sending unit & float, maybe a bad guage, etc.. best thing to do test the unit with a multi-meter on the ohm function and check for resistance. With the tank completely full, the ohms should be around 160 and 15 with it nearly empty.

well said blee...I can't remember but a guage on E represents a bad ground on the sending unit and a guage on F represents something else maybe someone can add to this...an old addage

No meter needed. Unplug the electrical connector going to the tank. If the gauge goes to full when the key is turned on, the float has likely sprung a leak and sunk. A bad "ground" or broken sender will make it FULL. A short, highly unlikely, will make it read empty. Reverse of many older vehicles.

Floats are common faults on these things. Had to replace the unit on my Navajo a couple years back. If you were smart, you'd go to the Dealer and get the Float plus the pump assembly all in one, so you only have to drop the tank once. it's more expensive, but it will save you from having to drop the tank in the future when the pump goes out.
