The other day I was driving down the highway and I decided to turn the heater on. Within seconds of turning it on the lights went dim, the battery lighht illuminated, and a burning smell came out of the vents. The engine also acted as if it were under a heavy load. Now everytime I turn the heater on the same things occur with the exception of the battery light illumination. I am thingking it is either the compressor clutch or the blower motor. Has anyone ever experienced this or does anyone have any knowledge regarding this issue? I live in colorado and could really use my heater. Any help would be appreciated. :us:

Did you try just the heater? The defrost engages the AC clutch and the AC compressor could be froze which would put a definite drag on the engine or/and burn your serpentine belt. You could try unplugging the AC compressor and see if it works.

It happens in any given position. Heater or Defrost. It doesn't matter. I have unplugged the electrical connector on top of the compressor so far. I tried spinning the inner disk on the compressor and it won't budge. I have a feeling this is going to be an expensive repair.

The engine could have bogged because of a direct short. that would also explain the battery light.

When you kick it on, does any air come out of the vents? if so, if you smell burning, it could be the blower resistor.

The A/C compressor, if it were locked, you'd know it. You'd hear the loudest squeal, then boom, your belt would be gone. Then you'd go no where, because you'd have no altenator, waterpump, fan, power steering, etc... Doubt it's the A/C Clutch. Either direct shorted blower moter, or shorted blower resistor. Start there.

Run the engine with that connector plugged in. open the hood, and turn on the A/C. See what happens. If that clutch kicks in, you'll see the compressor turn. Just make sure you watch the other problem if you smell smoke. Be quick about it. Let us know.

I just want to thank everyone for their input. The A/C compressor did lock up. No squeal, belt is a little worn. Heat works just fine with the wire disconnected from the compressor. I'm gonna have to replace it with a new one before I leave for Iraq-can't leave the family hanging.
