Are Mobil 1 ATF and Mercon 5 V tranny fluid compatiable with each other. I ask becasuse I can get an insane good deal on Mobil 1 ATF($1.50 bottle) and I have always wanted to switch over to sythetic tranny fluid. I currently run Motorcraft Mercon V. Thanks for the help

I ran Mobil 1 ATF for several years in my '99 with no problems whatsoever.

Mobil 1 ATF does not say compatible with Mercon V on the label, only Mercon. Although Al has used it with no problems, I would be leery of using it if Mobil doesn't recommend it on the label.

According to Mobil's tech line it is NOT Mercon V compatable....
I use Royal Purple in my 99 4R70W

FWIW....Lube-Gard makes a friction modifier (Green bottle-$10) that gives 'regular' oils including M1 if you want, the properties of Mercon V. No need to pay the higher price of "V". Thier marketing it to auto parts supply stores saying that they can "Cut down on inventory...carry only DexronIII and regular Mercon and have customers add the modifier..."

Sounds like what Ford did with the recent Explorer tranny fluid recall, add a bottle of stuff and away you go. Great marketing gimmick.

Alot of us think it in fact IS lube gard! (Or a Ford copy) My understanding is that the so-called 'wrong' fluid was regular Mercon, so it does make sense!
