View Full Version : Edelbrock or Bilstein
rgomez 06-05-1999, 09:47 PM I am going to change my shock and i want to
know, which shocks are the best. I usually
go on road. I have read diferents articles
about Bilstein and Edelbrock shocks and they
agree that edelbrocks are the best. But some messages said that Bilsteins are better for
on road use. I owned a 1996 Explorer XLT.
Thanks
Trane 06-06-1999, 08:49 PM I just put edelbrocks on saturday, and noticed a big handling difference on road, and I went offroad on some sand dunes and along the beach. I had a glass of water in the cupholder and never spilled a drop, my navajo now rides like a lincoln!

Like wise. I recently installed Edlebrocks and I have to tell you they are the greatest thing since shocks were first invented.
I have the Eddys and they are great, but if money is part of the equation, the Monroe Sensa-Tracs are very good and similar in operation to the Eddys. They are also sold under different names and frequently on sale (e.g. Napa Sensa-Tracs). Monroe is the parent company of Rancho. I had the Monroe before lifting and going to the Eddys.
renner99 06-26-1999, 03:36 AM Just put Edelbrocks on a 96 XLT and all I can say is - WOW! Better than new, NO corner rolls and solid in all conditions. At $89/ea not cheap - but WELL worth it.
Took the Bilstiens off because they were too harsh.
RonSC 06-26-1999, 04:24 AM After reading so many great things about the Edelbrocks from so many different people, I decided to spend the extra hard earned money on the Eddys over the less expensive Monroe Sensa-tracs.
I ordered them from Savannajones.com for $68.95/ea plus $17s&h, no tax!
I should be getting them in about a week 1/2 and I can't wait to put them on and see what all the hype is about. I just hope it's not as overhyped as Tyson vs. Holyfield II was. Although i think the end result will be much different. I'm not gonna bite a piece of ear from a chevy owner.
I'll post back when i have them on.
Ron
Gern Blansten 06-26-1999, 01:11 PM I only read one post that said the Edelbrocks were to harsh, so I went with them over the Bilstiens, and I am VERY pleased. Maybe my OEM shocks were worn out-but after replacing them the ride now is better than I had imagined it would be
Tyson 06-28-1999, 11:41 AM All I can say is that one week ago, Sunday, I purchased a '97 XLT, and that yesterday I put on Edlebrocks and WOW! What a major difference. I can't say enough good things about these shocks. Had I known about these shocks before, I would have put them on my previous SUV....
Hi guys,
Im looking into getting them for my 97 explorer and have received a quote of $600 installed. They are asking for $85 per shock and $260 to install. Is the install that difficult that it would cost so much? Im just trying to find the best prices. Please let me know what price is reasonable to pay.
Thanks,
Jate
Trane 07-06-1999, 06:19 PM 600 bucks seems awfully expensive to me, I found the shocks for 263.00(includes shipping) aand installed them myself in an hour with out removing the tires or using a jack. All you is a couple of sockets, some bailwire for the rears, and bandaids. I oredered them from

Trane got an excellent price. The cost of my local shops to install shocks is $10 each. If you like to wrench even a little, this is an easy one.
$600? In somebody's dreams.....
Thanks guys,
i just went to pep boys and they install the shocks for $10 a piece, but they are charging 89.95 for each shock. Im gonna see if I can buy my own for cheaper and have them install it.
Thanks a lot,
Jate
RonSC 07-14-1999, 04:31 AM Well,
After a long day of searching for parts and changing my cracked cooling fan, new Jet Thermostat, new hoses, fresh coolant, holes in the airbox, I finally got around to putting on my long awaited shocks... Edelbrocks!!!
First thing I noticed was the added height to my Explorer and the much improved handling! But i don't know if it's just me(since it's been a long day and i only drove the Explorer for a little while after).... but there seems to be more of a bounce or springy feel to them more so then before with my original shocks. Is this normal? Do they just need time to "settle"? Or is it that my tires suck and they just react differently with the Edelbrocks? I have Wild Country AT tires.
Any comments? I'll drive the Explorer a little more longer tomorrow morning to get a better feel.
Ron
Gern Blansten 07-14-1999, 06:28 PM I paid $311 for the shocks ($77 each) and $60
for instal ($15 each) at Globe tire in Manhattan Beach. I did notice they were smoother and bouncier but the old OEM felt like they were bottoming out, the truck does sit a little higher now too.
victor 07-17-1999, 08:37 PM RonSC,
I know what you're talking about...a jiggling sensation when you come to a complete stop. The Edelbrock technical guy calls it 'aftershake' and they've known about it. Edelbrock said the condition should stop after the shocks break in but I put up with it for 3 weeks with no improvement. I actually became nauseated from the jiggling movement and invoked the money back warranty. I had Bilsteins installed and even got some money back from the dealer because they cost less than the Edelbrocks. I'm totally satisfied with the Bilsteins. I can hammer my '96 Sport down dirt roads and through arroyos without bottoming the front end. (I don't do this a whole lot but the shocks do handle very well.) About Edelbrock and the local dealer (Desert Rat, Tempe, AZ) I really appreciate the excellent response to my problem. Edelbrock called me at home and took the time to thoroughly understand the problem and then honored by the money back guarantee. I wish more companines would do business this way.
greengoose 07-20-1999, 10:54 AM I am thinking about putting Edelbrocks on my 99 Limited. After reading your post on 'aftershake' makes me kinda uneasy about getting them now. Who else has had this experience with their Edelbrocks?
Thanks
Greengoose...somewhere in Bosnia....Wish I had my explorer here!!!
Tyson 07-20-1999, 02:05 PM I haven't felt anything like "aftershake." I've had them on now for about 700 miles and all I've noticed is the improved road handling....
I had Monroe Sensa-Tracs installed yesterday on my 94'EB (55k miles). As we drove off over our first patch of road, my son said."Wow, what a difference!" I also had Bosch Platinum Plugs and Wires installed at the same time. If the ride is not as good as new, it's pretty darn close.

treehuger 07-25-1999, 10:10 PM Ive had the Bilstiens installed for a year now & they are shot, my explorer rocks more than my canoe.
I drive offroad at least six days a month on everything from maintained wash board dirt roads to fairly nasty mining roads in the San Rafael Swell & daily on the horrible city streets here in salt lake. Ive had pot holes send the rear end of my explorer sideways up to a foot since Ive had the bilstiens & wash boards! whoa hang on!
Anyway hope this helps, Im edlebrock bound.
Doug
I would have to agree with the poster above me. I have had the Bilsteins about 6 months or so now and am very disappointed. They are the worst riding shocks that I have ever had. They were great at first, but with this hot summer heat now, they are junk. I would strongly suggest against Bilsteins after having them for a little while. I can not wait to get my James Duff lift installed. The Bilsteins are going to the junkyard.
Take care and happy exploring!

renner99 07-27-1999, 07:08 PM I too have noticed the ever so slight "rocking" motion just after coming to a complete stop with the Edelbrocks. I look at it as a confimation that my shocks are still functioning - there is not the severe nose dive associated with worn shocks. Does it bother me? - No. Worth removing and switching brands - not even close! Best ride adjustment money I've ever spent. Period.
JoeC4 07-31-1999, 11:38 PM I have the Eddys on my 93 EB and i love the way they handle. I dont have any aftershakes or anything. And very little bounce in the front or rear end. They give me a nice smooth/firm ride. I also replace all of my bushings with the Energy Suspension kit so this also contributes to the firm ride.
Kentucky Renegade 08-04-1999, 10:00 PM Has anyone else used the Monroe's or the Napa Sensa Trac long term. Will they last, or do I need to just spend the extra money and get the Edelbrocks.
JSterling 08-09-1999, 02:29 PM Spend the extra cash on the Edelbrocks ... you won't be disappointed !

DOGMAN 08-11-1999, 12:26 AM With all the comparisons of Edelbrock, Bilstein, and Monroe, has anyone considered the Rancho 9000? They are easily adjustable from soft to firm, heavy duty, can be found almost anywhere, and just flat out perform well. I have them installed on my 91 XLT with a 4" Superlift and have put about 20,000 miles on them. Couldn't be happier. The nice advantage of the 9000 is its adjustability. If your needs change you can adjust your shocks accordingly.
The price is right too. I paid $65.00 each for mine in April 1999. At that time they also had a deal from Rancho that if you bought three, the fourth was free. So four shocks cost me $195.00 .
The choice is yours but at least there are a number of good options.
DOGMAN
greengoose 08-24-1999, 04:35 PM I had Pep Boys install a set of Eddys on my 99 Limited.
1st impression as I pulled out of the parking lot was WOW...soft plush drop over the speed bumps. I was looking for the "aftershake" it was there just ever so slight. My wife said it didnt feel percise and tight as it once was. She jerked the steering wheel back and forth and it didnt seem to respond. At this point I wanted to take them back. As it turns out what was wrong...or so it seemed ...was the lack of rocking. The new shocks removed all of the rocking motion that would normaly been felt when jerking the steering wheel.
I went out down a old BUMPY paved road that I normally travel on and my explorer doesnt walk across the bumps in the turns like it used too. Also on the highway the high speed roll is gone....it stays level in high speed turns...feels great!!!
My only slight complaint was that it feels kinda mushy in slow easy manuvering...not truck like. Feel free to email me if you have any further questions.

What goes around....comes around. Don't burn your bridges.
I wish I had my 99 Explorer here in Bosnia with me...
Parker 08-26-1999, 07:54 AM I don't know if you guys have seen it, but skittles has a post on the Eddys for $54. It looks like a real deal to me!! Just go to her post and it'll take you to the web site. I've noted the page numbers for Explorers.
greengoose 09-13-1999, 01:34 AM Just another great comment on my Eddys. My friend has a 95 XLT and took my 99 for a ride and was very impressed at how soft it took bumps yet it was very stable in aggresive turns. He went out and got a set last weekend for his ( he paid full price at Pep Boys) and he cant get over the complete change in handling over his old ones. His wife says it doest feel like its going to tip over anymore. (He doesnt have a computer so he asked me to share his story with you all.)

I8ACHEVY 09-13-1999, 09:08 PM Hello all..
Just wanted to know if any of you have any experience or know of any experiences with a more aggressive package for the street as well as light off road use. For example..getting edelbrock's all around, as well as replacing the front springs and stiffening the rear leaf springs, and getting poly bushings all around. Since my '99 Explorer Sport sees more time on the street..I just want to be able to eat a few corners, and be able to take it off road once in a while.
Thanks
Aris
