Well, you're not that dumb. You were on the right track. Take 1 and divide it by 24. Take the result and MULTIPLY it by $500 gives you $20.83.

And technically the answer of $20.8333333333 is incorrect, since the smallest unit of a dollar is a penny. Not to be a smart ass, but the rather bizarre answer is that $500 cannot be divided evenly into 24 portions. The closest dollar amount is $499.92. If a group of 24 people won a $500 lottery, it would be impossible to give everyone an equal share. After giving everyone $20.83, you would end up trying to give 8 cents to 24 people.
