I just made a MAF adapter to hook a K&N filter directly to my air intake. I am thinking about either removing the airbox altogether ir simply cutting off 1 or 2 of the sides? First off, which filter should I use for my 2000 XLS 4.0L SOHC? Do I want the cylindrical or the cone shaped one? What are the benefits for each? Which model specifically? Also please give me advice as to a complete airbox removal or simply cut a couple sides off. Thanks for your input.

The search function is a great tool here. I'm sure you will learn to use it effectively if you stick around. There are tons of threads about this subject.

You do know that K&N does make a drop in replacement for your x, right? A cone filter would have a lot less air restriction but would be much more likely to get clogged with dirt, mud, water or sand if you do much off roading. Lots of guys on here have put a cone filter in their trucks and seem to be happy with it. I personally prefer to keep my filter enclosed and protected in the airbox. A ton of people have just drilled holes in their factory airbox. That is less air restriction and still is relatively protective from the elements.
