View Full Version : Record Gas Mileage
SilverBullet 04-07-2005, 01:43 PM I just had a personal best for gas mileage in my X..
331 miles on one tank, regular city driving with some highway.
Keep in mind I have a 5.0 AWD X.. :)
Sport4x4 04-07-2005, 02:00 PM better than my SOHC 4x4 Sport can get to a tank
SilverBullet 04-07-2005, 02:02 PM I wonder if getting a MAC intake would increase my gas mileage.
Sport4x4 04-07-2005, 02:12 PM i put a KKM on my old 3.0L Ranger and it didnt do anything other than make it sound better. i think i might just drill out my airbox for the sound if nothing else.
Brandons 04-07-2005, 02:33 PM Id just take the bottom section of the airbox out, and tape the filter in :P
Creager 04-07-2005, 02:33 PM i used to get 350 a tank on my 4.0 OHV, but that was back when she only had 150k on her
spta97 04-07-2005, 02:42 PM I'm jealous :( My personal best was 250 on my 5.0 AWD. Got any secrets?
SilverBullet 04-07-2005, 03:06 PM I wish I did! It's stock, nothing special. And I don't drive like a grandma either, I like to get on the gas.
00XLS 04-07-2005, 03:50 PM 320 is my personal best, most highway but some city
302Xplorer 04-07-2005, 04:00 PM 337 is my personal best, almost ran out of gas. Put 20.5 gallons back in. My wife was not very happy.

I've got the MAC on my 5.0, and I definitely noticed a 1 to 1.5 mpg gain. Well worth the investment considering gas prices are climbing higher and higher. Was getting around 12, jumped to 13.5, and now I'm trying to drive like a granny to save gas, now at 15.5.
BuffaloXplorer 04-07-2005, 04:25 PM i used to get 350 a tank on my 4.0 OHV, but that was back when she only had 150k on her
WTF??? I've got 154k and i'm lucky if i hit the 200mi mark... :thumbdwn:
But i know i've got other problems that no one can seem to find...
96limitedX 04-07-2005, 05:21 PM my dads 5.0 AWD can only seem to get about 230-250 with mixed drving..on the highway we have gotton 310.

Really? yeah definatly something else is wrong there. Now i got 176k and im getting 275 a tank. it usually goes up in the summer though. ill probably be getting atleast 300 by full summer.
its the OHV? have you tried tightening the lower intake? i heard that can cause excessive oil and fuel consumption.
I get about 18 mph on average city/highway driving. Also, i got the 66mm throttle body 70mm MAF and open cone filter...
always use havoline 10w-30 and motorcraft filter. dont know what im doing right haha... i think i just got a good one off the assembly line.
DUDe you are also in buffalo! i think the temp/humidity has a lot to do with it. when we get that 3 month stretch of 80-100 degree with 100% humidity here in NC is when i get the best MPG...
Bwana Bob 04-07-2005, 05:32 PM I've been able to get 340 with my '92 OHV, but CAUTION: if you let the tank get that low, if you stop on a downward slope, the fuel pump will suck air and she will stall. I had this happen twice, so no more gas-tank-Russian-roulette for me!
Seriously, I get 18-19 mpg, but I have the OHV engine, manual trans and a 3.27 rear end ratio. Strangely, this old Ex gets the same mileage as the 3.0 L Escapes!
Bob

yeah you're in the same boat i am... now that i think about it, its probably the 3.27 gears honestly
97BlackX5.0 04-07-2005, 06:39 PM ive got 3.73 gears in my awd explorer and have gotten 364 out of a tank all highway.... put in 19.7 gallons when i stopped... was pretty well loaded down too... thats roughly 18.5... i was pretty physced.... of course in the winter up here all city i can get as low as 10.... that sucks... i average around 15-16 though ...
RedEB 04-07-2005, 09:06 PM The best gas mileage I ever got on my SOHC was 29.8 mpg!! It was the first day I owned it and I drove all the way to San Jose from Reno. But then I did the TT/Shackles and 31s and now I'm getting about 18-19 city and 21-22 highway. Still not bad, but not 22 city and 28-29 highway by any means. :( ;)
Cheesebrat 04-07-2005, 09:57 PM i can get about 360ish on a tank on a normal day, in the winter i get about 320, but i drive like im 100 years old :) and i do mixed city/highway driving.
Chew_12 04-07-2005, 10:40 PM man these threads make me cry...i get about 10 - 11 mpg on average best is 12 with my 33's
96limitedX 04-07-2005, 11:07 PM well i just looked at my dads 97' window sticker for his 5.0 AWD. it the EPA rating is 14MPG city..its exactly what we are getting..lol
