............or Garden Tractor, depending on how you look at such things. :D

And okay, I started a thread, basically, in the Body Work forum, but for whatever reason, I decided to start another thread, simply because it goes farther than just body work, and I am bored right now and feel like e-talking.

And I know that most people won't care, "so what Robb, you got a POS mower?" But I look at this differently. I see this as a milestone!! :) Getting your first tractor IS a big deal! I didn't even notice this until I took my first ride on mine. I have spent many an hour on my parent's Wheel Horses, and friend's Ford 9Ns and 2Ns, but having your own is COMPLETELY different!! That there is MY ride!! Remember, after age 21, milestones get fewer and farther apart. There is getting married, having kids (and witnessing the wonderful things they do), getting that hopeful promotion, and then retirement................like I said, few and far, so this a big deal to me. :p

My tractor "appeared" to me early Saturday morning. A neighbor of mine was selling it (he is getting a newer, bigger mower from his uncle). I saw it, and didn't think much of it................but then it kept sticking in my mind throughout the day. I decided later that I had to go check it out. After realizing that I could get it for $200, I didn't care about its exact condition, I had to have it. I headed to the ATM, picked up the dough, and drove her home.

This is her:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24528&stc=1

She does need some TLC, and my plan is to give it to her. The cosmetic work needed is obvious, she needs a "makeover." The mechanical problems are what I am working on now. The main problems are on the deck. If you engage the PTO (belt driven), the deck wobbles like mad!!! the previous owner thought the blades were out of balance or the belt tensioner was bad. Well, he was wrong on both accounts. The blades are like new, although worn, there is only about 1/8" 'cut' from them and they will sharpen/balance just fine. The tensioner pulley has a slight wobble, but it main problem is in it's mounting plate, which needs a shim or two. The real deck problem is that one of the three blade pulleys/shafts simply doesn't want to turn at all. The other two are a hair rough, but this one REALLY doesn't want to move. I plan to remove all of them, clean them up, regrease them, and reinstall them........with the hope of that there is no real damage to the locked up one. With that, and a little grinding/sanding/painting to the rest of the deck, it should be good to go. The PTO and deck belts need replacing, and I need to come up with the "generic" sizes to them, because the MTD brand belts are $$$$, and that is what is actually installed on there.

Getting the deck right is priority #1. The engine, although strong, does "hunt" pretty much constantly. I plan to stick an air filter on it, replace the plugs, and hope for the best. The carb was, supposedly, rebuilt recently, although I don't quite believe this, so I may go ahead and do that. If anyone is familair with small twin cylinders, and knows about a common "hunting rpm" fix, PLEASE let me know.

HEHE, that is a LOT of typing......................that is all until I make some progress! :D

I ordered a Carb Kit from them and they were quite helpful with info on a 30 year old Kohler motor I have. I browsed through the forum and it seemed like everyone there was willing to help each other and I recall someone posting about Hunting RPMs.

Maybe you can get AK Ltd to Paint it, and clean it up, make it look brand spanking new! :D

OH SNAP!!! I have the mower at my office right now, but I will check the wheel size tomorrow. If I can get some spinner hubcaps for that size, they are SO on there!!!

How about a lift and maybe a solid axle swap.

My uncle has one of those, or something really similar.

Anyways, we took the mower part off and started doing wheelies. Then we towed his F-150 around with it.

Man I hope it didn't have a pair of worn gloves next to it and a divine petition to go eradicate demons...

Just whoring out my father's new Cub Cadet. For the sake of keeping his face off the internet, this is the first use of it this winter. It also has an automatic bagger, 40-something inch mowing deck, 25HP engine, cruise control, and cupholders. Bling. The plow is hydraulic, as is the deck lift. I wasn't sure why I thought I needed to take a photo of him using it, but I guess this is why. It replaced a 20 year old John Deere 318.

Judging by his face when it was delivered, Robb, you are right - when you're older, milestones are fewer and far between, and it seems like getting a new tractor is a big thing. :p

I thought all was going well with the deck, but after completely tearing it completely apart today, it is all bad. :( What I thought was surface rust on a lot of it, is "real" rust. Also, the blade bearings are in worse condition than originally thought.

On that note, I am looking at this as a learning experience as to what to look for in a future riding mower. Within 20' from where I am working on this mower, is a Wheel Horse of just about the same vintage. I am learning a lot by comparing these two mowers. I know for a fact that the Wheel Horse has had a hard life. My parent's yard is full of large tree roots, and this mower has been beaten over the years taking care of that yard. It has also been rolled into a creek at least once (maybe twice, can't remember if that particular mower did the first flop). It has also been stored outside, without cover, for much of it's life.

The first thing I have learned from looking at these two mowers (mine is a rebadged MTD), is the quality of steel used on the deck. Like I mentioned, the WH has been outside most of it's life, and there is VERY little rust on the deck, even after +/- 20 years. The MTD deck is quite a different story.

The second difference is the use of "zerk" fittings on the blade shafts to grease the bearings. The WH uses such shafts, and with normal greasing, the shafts spin like new. The MTD doesn't have grease fittings for the bearings, and the bearings are crap at this point.

Tomorrow, I am going to get some primer for the deck, which I was sure I had sitting around today, but obviously didn't. I then need to look into the cheapest way to handle the bearing situation. I HOPE the parts store has replacement bearing cases (with bearings) cheap and ready to go. But if they are $$$$$, I need to pull a bearing and match it up to a generic (Mogul) size and purchase them seperately, then press them into the casings. Then I have to deal with removing the 5 (of 12) bolts that I broke trying to remove the bearing casings.

I will grab some pics tomorrow on the progress..................

Put neons on the mower blade.

Cut out any "see-through" rust spots on the deck and weld in a patch and POR it.

I skipped the POR and just went with good ol' red rustoleum. Heck, I layered the rusted out floorboard of a TR6 with that stuff about 10 years ago, and it has been sitting outside (with no top) ever since and the floor is fine. :D

I had decided to just replace all three of the blade spindles, just to do it right the first time............................but then after calling my part's supplier, I decided against that! $85 a piece!! I decided to just pull the bearings out of the spindles and replace them, at a grand total of $45. Now, I just have to remove the 5 broken bolts from the spindles, which has shown to be a complete PITA. After much soaking with Kroil, and two different types of extractors, they aren't budging. I couldn't find a torch around the shop today, but I got mine here from the house ready to go for tomorrow. Propane torch + Kroil + extractors WILL get those bastards out..............or destroy the spindles in the process!! :D
