View Full Version : recommend an all terrain
War1ock 04-18-2005, 12:35 PM I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive set of all terrain tires. I have P255/70R16 right now and would like to get a similar size because I like the look of these size tires but going a little bigger is ok as long as there will be no rubbing. I'm still riding at stock height for a 98 sport. Thanks for any help.
ExplorerDMB 04-18-2005, 12:43 PM Pro Comp A/Ts are one type, but BFGoodrich A/Ts will probably be the most recommended. Try out tirerack.com or other tire sites for recommendations/reviews. I've heard that the newer BFG A/Ts are not as high quality as they use to be. My brother has some on his Ranger, and he seems to be happy with them. Good luck.

dman726749 04-18-2005, 01:23 PM buy some warrior shackels and do a tt and get some 31's...you will love it
as for the at's i love my bfg at's they have done great at everything i have thrown at them, although i have heard the pro comps are pretty much just as good....you really cant go wrong with either tire
xxScapegoat 04-18-2005, 01:32 PM ^^^ i think im gonna do exactly that.. question (sorry for posting a qiestion in your thread, war1ock): just how stiff is the ride with a TT? im sure its noticable, but is it so uncomfortable that most people undo it?
dman726749 04-18-2005, 01:32 PM no...its fine
War1ock 04-18-2005, 03:21 PM i was thinking of getting 4dr leafs... will that lift any?
dman726749 04-18-2005, 03:26 PM if your rear is saggin then it will apear to lift, but it will jsut be at stock height.....they are awalys a good idea to replace the mono leaf that you have now...and its pretty simple to do....also while you have the 4dr leaves out of the truck you could put in an aal or doubble aal to gain some lift. then put thoes and the warriors on at the same time and you would be set.
UtahX 04-18-2005, 03:52 PM Bfg At/ko
n3m3s1s 04-18-2005, 08:17 PM i can email (bzzman@hotmail.com) you some pics of mine if you want to see. they arent aggressive, but i think they look good. they fit without any lift at all. but i dont know for sure about sports.
now i will offer my personal opinion about all the info i have found on this site.
if anyone disagrees, respectful comments are welcome.
if you want to lift the rear, dont waste your time and money on aal's and shackles. i think shackles hangin down below the bumper are a bad idea. (looks funny and will snag offroad) you may not care about either, but i've also heard a few complaints of high speed wobbling. i have considered aal's and even the double aal to fix my elite butt sag. however, after reading complaints of ride harshness, i changed my mind. my ride is actually harsher than i would like as is. if you want a lift without those side effects, consider these. (http://customsuspension.com/store/index.php/cPath/36_90_188_365?osCsid=9b8991db820688cfdd78aecfaf89b793) they cost just a lil more than the shackles or double aal would, and give you even more lift.
to tell you the truth, the best lift i found for me was this. (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127121&highlight) i like it because it increases your rear ground clearance (spring over axle=SOA).
ok i've filled my rant quota for the day...
War1ock 04-18-2005, 08:38 PM What do you guys think of the Yokohama Geolandar A/T+II's?
dman726749 04-18-2005, 08:41 PM http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/yokohama/yo_geo_at_plus.jpg
dosent look to bad....not super aggressive but it looks like it would work.
rino351 04-18-2005, 10:33 PM here we go again
so much about A/T's to know.... just get swampers:D
FROADER 04-18-2005, 11:00 PM I like bfg and goodyear A/Ts
metstalker 04-19-2005, 12:33 PM i like bfg long trail t/a they ride better to me
vader5 04-19-2005, 01:31 PM I'd recommend Pirelli Scorpion AT's. I've had BFG's and I liked my Pirelli's better. They handled all weather on road conditions and off-road situations much better than my BFG's.
blackbeauty 04-19-2005, 02:18 PM  yeah, i got rid of the crap wrangler's and got yokohama goelander a/t II and love 'em. i got 255 70 16 and the ride great and have good off road traction, obviously not mudders but hold it to the floor and they'll go :D by the way i paid $500 to dunlop for tires mount valves stems and some warranty, good deal. i recommend them.
Co&Ca 04-19-2005, 02:31 PM BFGs
Eddie X 04-19-2005, 02:59 PM Hey, I got the same set up, 98 sport stock with 31's. No rubbing at all. Only I have 15' rims and the 16' you have will be a little more expensive for the tires. I run bfg. As for the rear, add a leafs with the short lower ones will lift and not be as stiff as the longer (top) lift ones, cause they will be in use 100% of the time where as the lower are only used in heavy load, towing or compression and won't be notice for everyday driving.
bayou sport 04-19-2005, 03:39 PM I am running the 255/70/16 toyo open country a/t on a first gen sport. They pull good in mud and are quit and ride good.
War1ock 04-22-2005, 01:13 PM I went out looking at the local shops today. The BFG AT KO's for 265/75-16 seem a little too expensive (atleast from this place). The guy told me about the same size Kelly Safari SUV. Does anyone know anything about this tire? The other place wanted to sell me 255/70-16 Cooper Discover ATR. I called another place and got some prices on Dueler AT Revos and Fireston Destinations for the 255/70-16 and prices on those same ones plus some Daytons which are 245/75-16. What do you guys think about these tires and also what kind of price should I be looking to pay for 4 tires installed?
dman726749 04-22-2005, 01:16 PM i got my bfg's for 104 a tire at sears....plus an alinment after the tt and i was out the door for around 600 bucks. yours may be a little more $$$ due to the 16" rim.
War1ock 04-22-2005, 01:20 PM i was told around $700 for the bfgs
i run bridgestone dueler revo A/Ts, 255 70 16. there's some pictures in my sig. they look pretty aggressive, and have handled rain, heavy snow, and mud really well so far. i think i paid about 140 each on tirerack.com
dman726749 04-22-2005, 01:36 PM if you are serious about taking the truck offroad some i would stay away from the kelly safari tires....stick to the bfg...revos..or the geolanders....aggressive tread isnt everything..the humber of plys in the sidewall is also important for puncture resistnace.
MtnBikerChk 04-22-2005, 02:04 PM i run bridgestone dueler revo A/Ts, 255 70 16. there's some pictures in my sig. they look pretty aggressive, and have handled rain, heavy snow, and mud really well so far. i think i paid about 140 each on tirerack.com
I'm going to get these this weekend. I currently have the Pirelli Scorpions - they are WAY over rated :( I was impressed for about a week and then I realized their snow traction was not that great.
War1ock 04-22-2005, 03:54 PM What do you think of the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S?
http://www.tiresplus.com/images/prod/tires/gd_wranglerrts_lg.jpg
dman726749 04-22-2005, 05:20 PM good tire...i believe ebinteceptor has them or some form of the goodyear wrangler a/t and they did pretty well at badlands last fall
War1ock 04-22-2005, 05:59 PM what about the walmart brand liberator? it seems like a pretty good deal on those and the tread is similar to the goodyears. i was told $480 out the door for good years and under 400 for the liberators with the warranty.
96limitedX 04-22-2005, 07:56 PM i love my cooper A/T discoverers..i was going to get BFGs but after some research i got these. good price also ;) alot of its personal preferance though :)

n3m3s1s 04-22-2005, 08:28 PM on my '69 c1500 i had the liberators (~30")on the front and the discoverers (31x10) on the back. i got them at different times and the prices were good. they were about the only thing i had available from the local shops back then. not a complaint with either, the discoverers lasted until i sold the truck and then they went on a '91 4Runner 4x4.
camaro_guy_z28 04-22-2005, 10:22 PM what about the walmart brand liberator? it seems like a pretty good deal on those and the tread is similar to the goodyears. i was told $480 out the door for good years and under 400 for the liberators with the warranty.Has anyone tried these, I should be getting tires in a week or so and i'm looking at the liberators pretty hard. Any opinions?
andylant2003 04-25-2005, 09:38 AM I bought some Bridgestone Dueler REVOs a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love them. I've only gone about 2000 miles on them, but I have no complaints so far. Look into them. A little pricy, but if you buy 5 from a Firestone, you can probably get a real good deal. I bought 5 and got a $220 discount off the total price including the Road Hazard warranty. I think total was $830 for 5 265/70-16 mounted and balanced.
JKulp42757 04-27-2005, 02:34 PM Nitto Terra Grapplers are what I consider the best AT tire. I've got them on my truck, and really like'em.

n3m3s1s 04-27-2005, 02:39 PM those look great, but i bet they cost you a small fortune for those 20's. my tires were bad enough at $600+.
410Fortune 04-27-2005, 02:48 PM I suggest Dick Cepek FCII's
Oh baby.
These A/T's look so sticky I am going to run them in Moab this year (33's) instead of my 35" half worn MTR's......
Cheaper then the KO, IMO a better alternative.
JKulp42757 04-27-2005, 07:04 PM those look great, but i bet they cost you a small fortune for those 20's. my tires were bad enough at $600+.
Thanks! Ya, 20 inch tires aren't cheap :( $277 each total with tax & shipping.
n3m3s1s 04-27-2005, 07:10 PM  $277 each
jeebus...good thing im a bigger fan of 15 inch wheels. those(dodge) are the only 20's that i think make a vehicle look better.
you'd think they'd be cheaper since there is more wheel and less tire. :D
