View Full Version : Just purchased first explorer
Keith303 06-09-2005, 12:37 AM Hi, this seems like a great community and I look forward to becoming apart of the boards. I recenly blew my engine in my mistubishi eclipse GS-T so I just picked up a 91 XLT with only 99k miles.
I have been learning alot about explorers this past week, and asfar as I know thats pretty low milage. The interior/engine bay is showroom shape aswell as the exterior exept the imfamouse rear lower fender rust.
The prior owner just added new M/S tires, suspension and brakes. It also came with the A4LD and tow package.
Im pretty exited about owning it. It seems lkike its going to be a great vehicle.
2 questions. when in 4wd is the ticking noise normal, I read it is todo with the auto hubs???. And was $3100 canadian a good price for what I described.
This was apic from the add, Ill take some better ones tomorrow

techieman33 06-09-2005, 01:04 AM That sounds about right price wise, and the clicking sound probably means at least one of the hubs is dying, I would suggest buying some manual hubs anyway, the auto hubs suck.
Keith303 06-09-2005, 01:55 AM ya, it comes from the driver hub, ill get them replaced before winter. is it stilll ok to use 4wd with it clicking like that?
ExplorerDMB 06-09-2005, 06:45 AM yeah, just know it might break on you though and put you back into 2wd.

Keith303 06-09-2005, 04:45 PM So manual hubs will cure the problem?
ohe_boy 06-09-2005, 07:57 PM Are you talking about a single click sound comming from the front end when you engage 4wd (pressing the 4x4 button on the dash) or a constant clicking noise while you're driving in 4wd?
If its a single click when you press the 4x4 button it might just be the 4x4 engaging.
But if its a constant clicking noise while driving, then I'm not sure what that is!
BTW - welcome to the forum. you can learn a lot of stuff here about your 1st gen explorer. Just make sure you use the search button first.

wow i have more mileage on my 2002..
Looks great btw
EMG7895 06-09-2005, 08:17 PM Is it a clicking after you have disengaged 4x4, you have to drive in reverse to disengage the hubs.
Keith303 06-09-2005, 08:30 PM it clicks only in 4wd, its a consistant ticking, asif it were a "card in the spokes" if you will. at walking pace its click-2seconds-click-2seconds click...., it gets faster as you pick up speed, but maxes out around 30 khm.
sounds asif it comes from the drive hub. thx for any help.
thx dave
techieman33 06-09-2005, 11:34 PM Sounds like it's the hubs. You don't have to get manual hubs, you can buy new automatic one's, or I think someone on the forum rebuilds them. But most people will tell you to buy manual hubs, they are a lot stronger and will last a lot longer.
ohe_boy 06-10-2005, 03:17 AM I've heard that the auto hubs are weak and that the manual hubs are a lot stronger. The only thing with that is you gotta go out and lock your hubs and then jump in and engage the 4x4.
I am going with Warn manual hubs on my SAS project, but it would be cool to engage 4x4 from just a push of the button without going outside.
