Hello all,
I'm new to the group but hopefully can learn enough to be of help to someone one day. Right now I'm planning modifying my 91 with a 4"lift & lim slip and can't decide on tires. I would like to use BFgoodrich Mud Terrains but I'm afraid of the road noise and mileage. Are they really much worse than the All Terrains? Also thinking about superswamper Thornbirds (in 31x10.5)
Thanks for any help,
Joe E

If you are worried about noise then don't even look at Thornbirds. They ARE NOT QUIET! And they are bias-belted so they are not smooth.

I've had them both on my truck. The BFG MTs will be much better off road for mud and sand and deep snow and most rock. BFG ATs are better for some rock (sandstone) and slick snowy roads or rain. The MTs are noisier but it isn't too bad. Paul's Thornbirds scream like banshees!!!...I heard them up in Utah on the run this week. The MTs will cost you 2-3 mpg. You are pushing all that air and it takes gas...

I have had both the BFG AT and MT tires. Definitely go MT. There is only a slight noise difference and the mileage is almost the same. I now run 35" thornbirds and although they are incredible offroad, they provide the loudest and roughest ride on the road. If BFG made a MT tire that was 14.5" wide, I would prefer that over the Thornbird.

Do you have a picture with the 35's on? I'd love to see it!!! I'm planning on going with 35 MT's on my 91 XLT. If it's not too much trouble...you could email the pic. Many Thanks! Trying to convince wife it won't be tooooo monsterous!
