The stock tires on my Mountaineer squeal like crazy, even at low speeds. Is this a problem with the tires, or is it a general characteristic of the truck? I have noticed a lot of other Explorers and Mounaineers use Firestone tires, would a switch to a diffrent brand or size make a diffrence? I'd like to keep my stock rims.

Yes, the stock tires squeal like a stuck pig when cornering. The Firestone tires that come stock on Explorers/Mountineers/Navajos SUCK!

As for replacement brands/types, everyone has their own opinion on what to get.

Got rid of the Wrangler RTS's and put on Kelley Charger 255/70R15 on my 96 EB V8 AWD.
Now have a much smoother ride and steering seems more responsive than before with less hydroplaning.

I too had the squealling problem when I had the RT/S's on my explorer. After over 93,000 miles I switched to Wrangler AT/S's (30x9.50's), no squealling and great traction in water, snow and ice.
