I have a 97 with the KKM. When installing it I noticed the little screan. I put it back when in stalling the KKM. Does anyone thing removing the screan to let more air in would cause a problem?

i just installed the kkm kit as well and i left the screan out. I left it out so that the mas and the kkm adapter would fit snug to each other. the screan is there to block debris from getting into the mas but i have faith in the S&B filter so i left it out. as far as more air flow i dont think that it will make too much of a difference.

Keith-are you refering to the screen on the MAS? If so, I removed mine about six years ago (I have a '91). It hasn't hurt the way my engine runs, so I don't think you really need it. Besides the air filter should stop any large objects from getting in to your intake.

Everyone is talking about lack of air, answer get the KKM kit or drill holes in air box-but KKM does not appear to be smog legal in CA.
Why not remove the baffle from behind the bumper? By nature a baffle restricts flow, I assume the real reason is so water and leaves will not get in, but here in the asphalt jungle not a big concern-if so one could put a screen over opening.
Has anyone removed the baffle and noticed better airflow? Is there any problems at low speed with air due to lack of a baffle?

well i found out the hard way getting water in my breather. i have the kkm induction kit on my 95 xlt. last weekend at the beach it rained all weekend. i hit a puddle with about 6 inches of water at about 25mph. 2 seconds later my engine dies and i atart an eight hour odeal of getting towed and picked up 3 hours from home. it was a simple fix. i had my mechanic pull the plugs and flush the engine. everything is fine now. the guy who towed me said that he has seen a lot of explorers end up the same way just becasue of the intake. i plan on somehow modifying the air hole or getting a snorkle, but that is almost excessive seeing how this is the first time.

Gern...I removed my baffle. I found that I get a little more air into the engine. I keep it in my toolbox now, incase I ever need it.

Sorry to hear about that Gabriel. Well I did remove the baffle and yes do notice some improvement-hard to quantify-but worth it.
I decided after being on a dusty trail-figured dust is goin in the other side and top of baffle and being pulled in by the motor anyway-so what's the difference.
Water is another story-but given the location seems difficult unless going fast, jeez I can't even see the hole looking directly into the grill and the ducting takes a dip that's some path for water to get thru?
It was not too hard, just remove the screws and gromets from the L shaped grill bracket. Remove the two plastic screws holding the baffle, actually after trying to remove from below I cut them off-too difficult to remove cuz they get stripped. I plan on getting two new screws-what maybe $1 and put a screen over the opening for leaves
Still undecided about KKM becuase of the CA smog certificate issue

What year is your Exlorer? I have a 96 that I would like to remove the baffle from but I don't see it.

Hi Gern,
What part of California are you in? We are trying to get some People together to go 4wheeling up towards Auburn, Georgetown area.
If you are close enough, would you be interested in going with us? http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif
You can get info on the Offroad Explorations under "Gateway to the Rubicon". Any one else out there who would like to join us please feel free to give us a post. http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif

Phantom-I have a 93' Limited, the Baffle is just behind and above the bumper to the left of the radiator. Ray thanx for the offer but I do not have a 4X4-I gave that up for the Limited. I know this is a 4 wheel drive group but the message board and info are informative-more so than http://forums.vmag.com/suvexplorer0199/

Hi Gern,
Thanks for the reply. You know I was thinking about doing just a senic route drive with any Explorer who wanted to do this. Something like a coast drive or a Napa Vinyard drive. You know something that EVERYONE might like to do, then stop somewhere and break some bread and BS about our Explorers. It could be a day drive or an overnighter. You think anyone would be game for this? http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Jordan,
I see that you are from So. Cal. I'm from Central Cal. What do we have in between.
Why don't you find that out and post it on the offroads Exploration forum (even though this wouldn't be an offroad trip, it's still a Explorer run) and let's see if we can get a senic road trip going. I wouldn't mind running the road with my 2wd brethern. there are alot of you guys out there that contribute to this web site too, and I think it would be fun to meet you all too. http://www.4x4central.com/ubb/smile.gif
I will see what I can find out also.
