View Full Version : 92 Explorer D60/70 with 5.0 Swap
explorerofdeath 09-26-2005, 03:39 PM Well, I've been making some real progress with the explorer of death in the past couple of weeks...
The GT-40 5.0l is in and bolted to the transmission & t-case (AOD with NP203/205 Doubled), just need to attach the accessories and wire it up (supposedly makes 400hp, should be ridiculous).
The V-8 of Fury (www.u.arizona.edu/~coxb/Gilbert/Engine.jpg)
Have had the Dana 70 mounted in the back for some time now, and finally getting somewhere with the front Dana 60, both will have Lock-Rites.
The Dana 70 (www.u.arizona.edu/~coxb/Gilbert/Dana70.jpg)
The Dana 60 (www.u.arizona.edu/~coxb/Gilbert/Dana60.jpg)
Soon, I will be scaring other explorers off the road with tiny 37" Super Swampers (seen mounted on the Dana 70)... and I have 41" Michelin Xl's, but I have to buy the 20" rims for them, so that is farther down the line.
The Huge 41's (www.u.arizona.edu/~coxb/Gilbert/37V41.jpg)
I will have more pictures later, enjoy these for now
bmxking5 09-26-2005, 03:48 PM Dang!!! That is one hell of a truck you have there. I thought I'd have a big, tough truck with a D44 and 9" on 37s and a 5.0 (once I finish all of that), but yours...wow. I'm speechless. This will definitely be a beast once it's done. Pics and/or vids are mandatory when you finish this thing. :D
mitch 09-26-2005, 07:13 PM Pics and/or vids are mandatory when you finish this thing. :D
i must see action shots :D
410Fortune 09-27-2005, 10:38 AM hahahahaha you are a NUT! Nice going :)
PIctures are HUGE, I can't see the engine.
How does the Gt-40 make 400 horsies? is it built?
Are you going to put a distributor in it and run a speed density setup?
I suggest using the Canton billet oil filter adapter, the other styles have been known to leak and changin it out once its all together is not fun.
explorerofdeath 09-27-2005, 01:14 PM 410Fortune: I guess we're all alittle nutty to be lifting, Doing SAS, and V-8 engine swaps on our respective soccer mom SUVs... :)
I've had it since '98. When I bought it it had 235/75/15 and no lift.
Everything is going pretty well, so far... we'll have to see what the outcome is when the dust settles. 400 horses... well we'll have to see. It's 1 of 6 built for a racing team that ended up not wanting any of the 6 engines after they were done. So, it should have some goodies in it... I hope...
mitch: I'm hoping to have it all done by the last weekend of October. I'm hoping to have pictures and/or video soon.
bmxking5: The whole is being built for fun in mind... It's a two year project nearly completed. THANK GOD!!!
I look on this forum on a daily basis wishing my rig was done so i can hang out with other Explorer owners... :( ... Now, it actually going to be a reality... :)... just to drive it again will be enough for me. The rest of the modifications are just icing on the cake... :D
I hope to see most of you guys out on the trail... in Arizona... soon.
Thanks and take care, Gilbert
Looks great! How close is the drivetrain to being up and running?
What are you doing with the old wheel and tire setup?
explorerofdeath 10-11-2005, 10:00 AM I have until the 28th of this month... I'm heading out to the Imperial sand dunes, in California, with my local offroad club. It should be under it's own power in the next couple of weeks... i hope. We're working on it everynight and weekend until the night before we leave on the Friday the 28th for Glamis.
The 5.5" superlift, frontend, rearend, extended brakelines, transmission, etc. went to a fellow club members Explorer. We ripped out all of her old stuff and lifted her Explorer in two days...
Glamis should be hella fun in that beast.
explorerofdeath 10-12-2005, 10:35 AM I'm hoping that it's done by then. Hopefully i'll be taking pictures and video... :)
410Fortune 10-12-2005, 10:43 AM are you putting a distributor in that GT40 engine and running a Mustang computer?
rino351 10-12-2005, 03:48 PM that thing is freakin awesome!! have fun paying for the 20s though :p
explorerofdeath 10-12-2005, 04:04 PM I'm getting 20s from USA 6x6. Maybe end of the year... if i'm lucky.

I don't have too many pictures of it. As i was lifting it the engine started going and the drivers side hub blew. It was a big ole street 4x4... :(
I'll try to find more if i can...
I'm the Faculty Advisor for the club and have been a member for about three years know. With the club being a university recognized club and the members being a bunch of college kids i get ribbed and hacked on because i'm an employee of the univesity and the oldest (36 years) member. It's all in good fun.
I doesn't hurt... i have tough skin... :D

explorerofdeath 01-10-2008, 05:00 PM Looks good. So do you still have it?
Yeah... just got it done a day before Thanksgiving
The original engine gave out back in '02. Back then it had the 5.5" superlift and 3" bodylift running the same 37's.
5 years and $$$ later, It sits on a 78-79 HP DANA 60 (w/lockright) and 79-80 DANA 70 (w/lockright). I still have the 3" bodylift due to the fact that the 5.0 wouldn't fit. The 5.0 is bolted up to a AOD which is mated to a 203/205 combo.
I've only been on one shakedown run (Chiva Falls 12/09/2008) and it did really well.
The only thing(s) I need to do is install Alloy USA 35-spline inners and outers, with a TerFlex drive flange kit, and Spicer Forged Front Dana 60 Axle U-Joints (5-806x). Then yank out the heavy rear drum brakes and install lighter disc brakes...:)
The Heep has done great for nearly 4 years and running... Heeps are good little runners
more more more. i want to see more! this thing ba ba ba badddddd
explorerofdeath 01-10-2008, 05:54 PM Here's the 20x9s w/3.5" backspacing from USA 6x6
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f247/explorerofdeath/Img_7272.jpg
Here's my buddy Dustin and I (on the right) doing the 2 piece rim dance
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f247/explorerofdeath/CIMG0084_Small.jpg
Here's the Michelin XL 12.5R20 (41s) mounted to the 20x9 2 piece rims
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f247/explorerofdeath/Img_7503.jpg
That's why the HP DANA 60 is getting new inards and the DANA 70 is getting the rear disc brake conversion...:)
Those will go on in a week or so...
man, look at all the tires you have in your garage.
explorerofdeath 01-12-2008, 11:10 PM man, look at all the tires you have in your garage.
I had a ton more but the wife made me get rid of em...:D

explorerofdeath 01-14-2008, 12:28 PM what springs are you running in the front again? and i would like a few good pics of the spring hangers and maybe a measurement or two IF its not too much trouble......
Front springs are 2" lift 44044s for a jeep wagoneer
(I got this off a toyota forum:44044s are Rancho Jeep Wagoneer Lift Springs.
Length: 47”
Center Pin split (front/rear) 22.5"/24.5"
Bushing: 3”
Lift: 5.25 - 5.5”).
1976-1986 CJ Jeep Front Stock Main Eye Spring Hanger.
Rear hangers are custom made.

Yeah...It seems like outa nowhere but It's been 5 years and running on the mods...:)
I'm really glad it's up and running.
5footoverhead 03-25-2008, 08:44 PM is your drivetrain going to be to long? what kind of transmission & tcase did you use? How long is your driveshaft going to be when your done? like to know cause im doing the same thing with my explorer
5footoverhead 03-25-2008, 08:50 PM did u get the tcase and transmission off a f250 or f350
explorerofdeath 04-07-2008, 04:06 PM Sorry about posting late.
The AOD 4x4 transmission is from a mid 80s bronco and the NP203 and NP205 those came from mid 70s thru late 80s Ford F150s thru F350s.
As far as driveshafts, I'll need to measure them for you.
bonair22 12-12-2008, 09:04 PM whats this look like with the 40s on it??

Underhood is FUGLY()... It's a runner and I enjoy the extra power of a V8.
I'll try to take some photos of underhood and undertruck this weekend.
Thanks again, Gilbert

WOW a 429? I'd like to see pics of that motor.... If I'm out and about on a easy run I'll use the 41's but on more difficult trails I use 37 SSR's. The Explorer flexes pretty well...
With 37's

yup, it is a stock unit and it works pretty good. I replaced the rear drums to disc and it stops much better.
popeye123 05-22-2009, 07:32 PM do you have any pics of how you mounted your front axle?
explorerofdeath 06-04-2009, 05:37 PM Sorry for not replying quicker...
Yes sir, I need to look for them and I'll post em up asap...:)
