View Full Version : *New Website Feature* - Product Reviews
Today I launched a new Product Review (http://www.explorerforum.com/reviewpost) section for our website. This section allows Elite Explorers (http://www.explorer4x4.com/elite.html) to review products that they have purchased and installed for their Explorer, Ranger, Mountaineer, Navajo etc... Besides automotive product reviews there is also an open catagory so you can review any product that you would like including restaurants, computers, R/C models etc. There will also be a catagory to review vehicles whether they are Explorer based or not.
You will find permanent links to the Product Review (http://www.explorerforum.com/reviewpost) section at the beginning of the forum listing under the "New Members Photo Gallery Explorer Registrys and Features" catagory as well as in the gray navigation bar which is near the top of every page in our message board.
Hopefully the ability to post reviews will be another incentive for folks to become Elite Explorers (http://www.explorer4x4.com/elite.html).
Enjoy!!
Aldive is off to a quick start. He's already the #1 poster over there too!

I like it Rick. Just nothing on there for me yet... ;)
FROADER 01-17-2006, 07:41 PM Good idea. There is already a lot of good stuff on there. This will make it a lot easier to search for certain things as well.

stupid job getin in the way of web wheeling
Think its a really good idea. should also cut down on some of the redundant posts about part a vs part b
Now all i need is to consider buyin somethin and someone to post a review on it :D
Brian1 01-17-2006, 08:26 PM Cool, I will be adding some stuff at a future date. Also nice to read opinions and reviews before buying something. Thanks Rick.

Good idea! Looking forward to all you hard-core guys posting reviews! ;)
BrooklynBay 01-17-2006, 09:24 PM There was a thread about a month ago that different people posted their opinions about different kinds of shocks. Most people liked the Gabriels for the price. Rancho came in second, and Edelbrock came in last. A few other ones were mentioned, but if you read it, you will get the idea. Here is the link:http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148832&highlight=koni
Hopefully they'll copy their reviews to the new section...
chriswells78 01-18-2006, 01:45 PM Bump....come on, guys, I know you have knowledge of parts you have used, how hard they were to install....how long they lasted....hell, go in and rate what other people have already reviewed.
It takes about 2 minutes to rate a product once it has been reviewed...it only takes about 10 minutes to do a full write up.
I would post more but most of my experience so far is with vehicles other than my Mounty, so they do not apply.
I just added a section to review automotive repair shops and fabrication shops.
I'd like to ask the Elite Members what they think about opening the review section to posting for all registered users. Should the section be only for Elite's to review products or should we let Registered users post reviews also???
rizzjc 01-19-2006, 11:14 AM What about turning it around to encourage *more* Elite members? Here's my idea:
Anyone can POST a review, and maybe with that, they get a free trial to "Elite status" (a month or something). The catch is that you need to be Elite to look at the product review section. It would be another advantage of Elite membership. This would put some real "value added" behind the Elite membership, and encourage more to join.
Of course, this idea might also 'cause a flury of messages negatively directly at poor little me, but it's just an idea. ;)

aldive 01-19-2006, 11:20 AM Is there a way that new listings and review posts can be included in the "new Posts" section?
I don't think many realize this section exists.

I'd say no. It's a perk to being Elite. You get to see what works for who and why and so on. I think we are too lenient on non-elites. I am a member of the iATN.net group and they have A LOT of stuff blocked out for "elite members" only. I can tell you right now I want to sign up for membership; but it's not exactly that necessary right now. When members on here start saying "well I wish I could get into that section cause I could really probably use some information in there" -- well then they'll pay the $20. The "preview" way stated above is ok, but I would give them a week, not a full month. I may be harsh on this subject, but I think we've just been to easy on non-elites. My $.02

chriswells78 01-19-2006, 11:46 AM I think we should give a teaser, like, you can see what has been reviewed but you don't get to read the reviews or the ratings. Maybe that will be enough to get some more to register because they want to see what people have said about a particular product. Maybe it will get some vendors to register and see what we are saying about their products too.
Rick, I have a problem uploading photos into the review section right now. Every time that I try to upload a review with a photo in it, the browser goes to a blank page with this message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagegif() in /home/explorerforum/www/html/reviewpost/image-inc.php on line 142
Is it something that I am doing or is it a software issue?
aldive 01-19-2006, 11:49 AM I have had the same message too.
Is there a way that new listings and review posts can be included in the "new Posts" section?
I don't think many realize this section exists.
I have asked for that modification at the ReviewPost website. So far I haven't recieved a reply.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagegif() in /home/explorerforum/www/html/reviewpost/image-inc.php on line 142
I just fixed that issue. It seems that the program didn't like dealing with .gif files. It should be fine now.
chriswells78 01-19-2006, 12:18 PM I was able to go back and re-post the pictures to the already reviewed items, thanks Rick.
section525 01-19-2006, 03:16 PM This is gonna be pretty cool. Hopefully it doesn't get tough to find products which would lead to more than one review of the same item. Now everyone go review something you added to your ride!
celly 01-19-2006, 03:18 PM Aldive is off to a quick start. He's already the #1 poster over there too!
I've posted one item for review and done a handful of reviews as well. I'm not even listed as a poster.
I think the counter is broken. I don't doubt Al will be #1 poster. How someone is able to maintain almost 10 posts/day for several years is beyond me! I thought I was back at 3.3/day. ;)
chriswells78 01-19-2006, 03:29 PM It only counts when you post an item, I have reviewed a few that others have posted and when I review one that others have posted, it does not add to my counter.
rizzjc 01-20-2006, 09:31 AM Hey Rick, is it possible to make the reviews editable? Oly because I can't type, and it takes my 2x to do anything, but it would be nice to be able to correct something that is wrong. That would be nice for the product description as well.
Yes, it should be editable by the poster. I will look into fixing that now.
celly 01-20-2006, 10:06 AM Yes, it should be editable by the poster. I will look into fixing that now.
Agreed that it would be nice. There is no "preview" feature on reviews so no chance to fix typos.
Go ahead and try it now. Let me know if it works for you.
rizzjc 01-20-2006, 10:32 AM Like a champ! Thanks!
chriswells78 01-20-2006, 11:33 AM Look at Al go! Geezopetz! almost to 30!
I added a new catagory for "Exterior Modifications". If you had an Exterior mod that was in the "Other Automotive Products" catagory it has been moved to the new catagory...
Thanks to Celly for the idea

C'mon Elites, I know you all have some strong opinions on lots of products. Let's get them into the review section!
aldive 01-22-2006, 06:35 PM Rick, is the time stamp ( of the review ) off? or is it me?
ExplorerDMB 01-22-2006, 06:55 PM Rick, is the time stamp ( of the review ) off? or is it me?
It is off. By a good amount too
It should be fixed it's now set to -5 GMT.
aldive 01-22-2006, 08:34 PM I just did a review at 9:30 PM Eastern time and the time stamp saud:
Sun January 22, 2006 8:28am
Am I doing something wrong? All the regular posts have the proper time.
BrooklynBay 01-22-2006, 09:01 PM Speaking of problems with the website. One problem that has been around for a while is with the PM status area. If a moderator opens a PM, it still shows that it hasn't been read. For some reason, if anybody else opens it, it registers, and shows the time that it was read.
I think it should work now. I had to set it for -14 hours! Bizarre...
aldive 01-22-2006, 10:11 PM Now it says ...

for a posting I made at 9:30 pm.
I think we're getting closer! The software designers really botched up the time feature
SuRrEaLNJ 01-23-2006, 12:15 PM I just got off my butt and contributed. :D
Well, I can't add the latest reviews to the "New Posts" search, but I did the next best thing and added the latest reviews to the main forum page. Just scroll down to the bottom of the forum listings and you will find the new addition.
chriswells78 01-24-2006, 11:24 AM I like it there on the main page. It is a good teaser for the non-elites
celly 01-24-2006, 01:08 PM I like it there on the main page. It is a good teaser for the non-elites
Too bad we can't get more elites to review some stuff. Between the handful of us that are uploading products, other elites only have to post reviews. That's the easy part.
C'mon Elites, this is a great resource, but not very useful with only 1-3 reviews per product! :p
rizzjc 01-24-2006, 01:20 PM Not going to happen overnight. I think it's growing pretty good. As long as people are hitting it every day it'll get built up in no time at all!
chriswells78 01-26-2006, 05:36 PM Look at Celly go. You need to change your elite tagline to "review mas'a" :p
