View Full Version : Friday Night Project: Shop Bench
section525 02-24-2006, 07:07 PM Well last Friday night I made the stand for my table saw (which can be found in my garage remodeling (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147763) thread. So tonight, if I don't have to go to some weak ass party up the road, I'll be finishing my bench.
I picked up 60' of 1 1/2" square tubing (1/8" wall) a little bit ago and already got started on the project. I am in here because A) I need a new blade for my chop saw, and B) I need more disks for the grinder. :D
The plan is to make a 6' x 2.5' bench with a 1.5' shelf underneath. I chose the smaller bottom shelf so you could sit at the bench on a stool with your legs under it kinda deal.
As of now I have the top section done. Going to get supplies. Stay tuned.
section525 02-24-2006, 07:08 PM Now I know I could probably buy a bench for a fraction of the cost of the steel I just bought. But that wouldn't better my welding skillz, would it? :D I want to get plenty of MIG time before I go to work on suspension stuff.
410Fortune 02-24-2006, 07:23 PM Keep em comin! I love projects, never bored.
Lessee this week I started working on my friends 95 ex I am doing the engine swap in.
I replaced the rear disk pads on the BII
I painted my kitchen and dining area
I added more shevles to the garage
I finished wiring up the house for sound, I have 3 seperate stereo recievers playing the same signal from the computer or laptop, speakers outside and in 5 rooms.
Not bad for a week.
I do need to get my welder going, you are making me jealous :)
section525 02-24-2006, 07:45 PM Seriously... it took me .42 hours from the time I bought the welder to the time I made my first weld. You've had yours for over two months!! Slacker!
410Fortune 02-24-2006, 07:49 PM yes yes other projects have been delaying the use of the Hobart, oh and $$$.
Need to have 220 run to the garage still..........
RockRanger 02-24-2006, 08:00 PM If you put it on casters get the biggest ones you can find. Like 6" or bigger. Also what height are you going to make it? My wood workbench is 36" and my metal one is 40" I think 37" would be a better height. One of these days I will cut my steel one down lower.
section525 02-24-2006, 08:53 PM This is going to be a stationary project bench. I want it stool high. It's 42" high. Which now that the stool (a stool) is in front of it.. it may be too tall. Maybe I'll cut it down an inch or two.
Glacier991 02-24-2006, 09:25 PM I'm curious what the steel cost ya and where you got it.

I get it right around the corner at a local machine shop. My dad put in 25 years on the hydraulic side of the business.. so I know a lot of people over there. But I am not saying they give me a deal on steel. :p
I paid $140 for 60' of this junk. It's 1 1/2" 1/8" wall if you forgot. :D
Here's how close it is.
section525 02-24-2006, 09:39 PM Here is where I am. Got most of it done. I am going to put some angle iron in the inside edges to hold plywood for the tops. I may go to this steel later on if I need to. But I had a wood bench just like this (cheaply made of 2x4s and bolted to the wall) so I think I'll be happy with it as it is.
section525 02-24-2006, 09:42 PM Here you can see the old setup I tore out. Don't mind my dumbass dog who thought it would be funny to sleep in the shelf. :p
Glacier991 02-24-2006, 10:26 PM Does my heart good to see I am not the only one with trannies and TC's and that kinda shjt layin around. Course you helped <g>.
How are you finding the welding experience with that wire feed MIG welder ?
ExplorerDMB 02-24-2006, 11:50 PM Looks like a nice table. That's an expensive table too
410Fortune 02-25-2006, 12:14 AM Might be expensive but you can give something like that to your kids for generations to come....
SuperEx91 02-25-2006, 12:26 AM Looks good. I am moving into a house behind the place i work at and it has a small shed that i am gonna make into a little shop. I cant pull a car into it but it is big enough to rebuild motors, trannies, tcases, or whatever else i can fit in there. I was just gonna make a bench against the back wall and probably throw a flourescent light or two up. I am excited because right now i am in an apartment and cannot work on anything there and now i am getting a house with a yard and shed and i even have a small stone driveway!! :D I know, pathetic. what can i say? im livin up the college life!
section525 02-25-2006, 01:00 AM We're rounding 3rd. I just got done primering.
I'm using some white... stuff... for the top. It's called Melanie or some chick's name.
section525 02-25-2006, 02:58 AM Done!
james t 02-25-2006, 06:51 AM We must think alike, because i built that exact same table last year only i used 3/16" steel for the top and didnt build a bottom shelf. Its even made out of 1/8" 1.5 square tube and i think its pretty close to the same dimensions as yours. Ill get some pics later.
Glacier991 02-25-2006, 12:45 PM Very nicely done.
section525 02-25-2006, 12:50 PM Thanks! I think it'll look a lot better when the garage is done. :p
ExplorerDMB 03-01-2006, 06:11 PM Wow that's really nice - good job

tdavis 03-01-2006, 07:08 PM Looks nice, but..
I think you need more support under the top. Once you start whacking on anything, it's going to crack/split real easy.

I bought some more angle iron to do just that. I was thinking about throwing a steel sheet of something up top too, along with maybe something to mount the legs to the wall with.
Right now it doesn't have a very tough life though. :D

I'll definitely beef it up when I get more active in the garage.
BrooklynBay 03-01-2006, 08:15 PM That's a really nice job! It's hard to make it exactly level. Did you put anything on the bottom of the legs, such as threaded adjuster feet just in case the floor is uneven in one area, or some sort of protective bottom to prevent it from scratching the floor? A nice addition to this would be to install sliding utility drawers underneath it for storing things. I have 3 drawers underneath mine. They are plastic, but you could weld tracks on yours to make drawers out of metal, or wood. Are you going to mount a power strip on it, and install a vice, and grinder?
