View Full Version : argh rub
'97 V8 03-06-2006, 09:50 PM So after i got my tires installed on my stock rims (with mounty rims it looks badass so im keepin it that way) and when i went to make a left turn...sharp and almost at lock, i hear my tire rub on the left side. i get out to cjeck it out, nothin on the fender, so i look closer and its rubbin on the frame. Also booth tires nick the sway bar. i havent done the torsion bar twist yet...on friday i will, thats when the fastenol bolt comes in. Is there spacers i could buy for the front and rear(to make it look equal).?
Any help is appreciated. :D
SkanlaxJMO 03-06-2006, 10:12 PM wheel spacers there are 2 inch wheel spacers around umm here is a pic of a stock X with 31's and wheel spacers.

I have heard that they are dangerous though.
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 12:59 AM i know all about the torsion bar lift and springs...im not a newb lol. i was talkin about spacers. 2inches is waaay too much. i need a few mm's to clear the frame
FROADER 03-07-2006, 01:24 AM You can get just about any size spacer you want made.
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 01:43 AM what material should i use, steel or aluminum?
shadowex 03-07-2006, 02:27 AM steel would be stronger and aluminum would be lighter i maybe wrong but to put less stress on the wheel bearings i would go with the lighter aluminum well thats my 2 cents anyway hope i helped
SkanlaxJMO 03-07-2006, 08:28 AM yeah....The pic i put up was with 2in wheel spacers. You can find them anywhere that guy found them on E-bay for 160$ for all four.

ya, but i was there wheeling with him in that picture and he was rubbing on the tops of the fender wells all day. and the day after the trip he had a flat tire that may have been caused by that. Just wait for the TT and see if you still have rubbing after that. there are also 1.25 inch spacers like that guy has and i would guess they wouldn't rub and they are more like $100 off ebay.
edit, you can also get those .25 inch spacers that are just like a big metal washer with holes in it for the lug nuts, they are pretty cheap, but i'd be worried about the lug nuts getting enough bit and holding, not sure how the safty of this type and the larger 1.25+ wheel spacer (actually a wheel adaptor) is. You will get more bearing wear the further out you go though.
everythintech 03-07-2006, 12:00 PM dude, you should just by some new rims with the right backspacing, i have 15x10s on 13.5in wide tires, and i only rub my fenders, i have just under like 3 5/8 bs i think. save yourself the safety. the rims i got were only 110 a piece. and 8in wide rim can get as low as 42 a piece. jsut a thought
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 12:06 PM i have 15x10's ready to be mounted with 3.75 bs and a -19mm offset. i just like the look of the stockers. its cool lol. if the 2" tt dont fix it, ill just mount em on the 15x10's. i went on ebay and found 2" spacers, that have the new lugs and everything. the threads on the spacer are really long so i shouldnt have problems with thread bite. i hope you have a sawzall everythingtech when i come over saturday :D . sawzall is my friend
everythintech 03-07-2006, 12:35 PM hahaha, i dont have one, but i need one, i might go by one. i want to chop my top. we'll see.... dont do anything until you see my ex, then you will get a feel for what a 15x10 looks like in person
410Fortune 03-07-2006, 12:46 PM Um 2" wheel spacers are not a good idea IMO.
I would think about like .5" or so, and up front only.
or run the correct offset rims for the tire size.
Torsion twist likely will not remove the clearance issues, could even make it worse.
A little rubbing never hurt anything either IMO.
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 12:54 PM i think im gonna buck up and buy the 15x8's. will the rubbing affect any of the metal parts on the truck? like when the tire rubs the frame its when im at full lock goin like 3-5 mph, its polished the frame to bare metal, it wont wear at the frame will it?
410Fortune 03-07-2006, 12:58 PM nope, typically tires can get cut, but the metal will be fine. I suggest you dont turn to full lock and it wont rub.
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 01:11 PM ya thats what ive been doin. makin u turns blow ass right now, i end up drivin up and over the curb a bit.
410Fortune 03-07-2006, 01:17 PM buy a BII :)
I can U turn in less then two lanes, my 4 door Explorer does not even come close :)
I drove with tire rub for years, just never went to full lock.
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 01:27 PM i can make a 2 lane u turn...sorta.
Explorer#2 03-07-2006, 03:49 PM Mahdey, looks much better now, you just have to lift yours before me, hope you get the rub figured out
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 03:54 PM it is lifted :( i got the bl and shackles on. this weekend the aals and tt is happenin.
ExplorerDMB 03-07-2006, 07:20 PM Read my post in the stickies about wheel backspacing offset and wheel spacers - you'll find some information there. Just be safe with wheel spacers and know that they will put more stress on your components as would more bakcpsacing

'97 V8 03-07-2006, 07:34 PM ive read your post...the day it came out actually. like i said im gonna buck up and just buy some 15x8's with 3.75 bs and a -19mm offset.

hey buddy before you go all out i have the same rims i bought off here with 33 12.50's on them rubbed just barely so i bought spacers at the place i had put the tires on and now everything is fine its been a long time now and no more problems at all even when wheeling and the best part they were only twenty bucks! for all four! and the stems were plenty long just what i did
'97 V8 03-07-2006, 09:38 PM what was the spacer width?
