View Full Version : Ford Explorer Specs and Maintenance Reference
ExplorerDMB 05-29-2006, 12:20 PM On the homepage of the forums there are two sections called Ford Explorer Specs (http://www.explorerforum.com/ntrprize/) and Ford Explorer Maitnance Reference (http://www.explorerforum.com/Singleton/exp.html). Both can be VERY handy to the DIY or even techs. These are usually over-looked while searching through the forums. They are located inbetween Explorer Related Poles and Offroad Explorer Projects.

J. Anthony 03-14-2007, 08:42 PM I think sometimes, because I am tactile and need a lot of explanation these areas are good, but I need more input. I will look at these more in the future. I am having such issues right now that this will be a great help and will none the less aid me in asking better, more specific questions.

briwayjones 03-14-2007, 09:04 PM I've noticed several mistakes in the past on the specs. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the 1st gen 4 doors had a 18.3 gallon fuel tank not 19.3.
J. Anthony 03-14-2007, 09:12 PM I have a '94 X Limited 4x4; I can run just at 18.5 gallons before I refuel. I always top out at 19.6 gallons use-able fuel. I ran my tank dry and refilled about 21.? gallons. I know I have about 19.5 gallons use-able fuel before I run out. Now to say my tank is 19.5 gallons, no, it must be bigger because of the fuel I use. Especially when I run it dry and fill up 21 plus gallons.

briwayjones 03-14-2007, 09:15 PM My '91 manual says 18.3 and I never got more than that in it. Maybe they made it a little larger in the later gen 1s?
J. Anthony 03-14-2007, 09:26 PM Damn. I thought you were going to tell me some good info. See, my guage, fuel guage doesn't work so I am always figuring my gas mileage. I know if I drive highway miles I get 21 mpg. If I drive around the city, 13-17mpg. I ran out at 19.6 gallons mathematically, but ended up putting over 21 gallons in to a full tank. That is the same as the tank on my F250 which has two tanks. They measure just at the same, but not quite exact. On my F250 I have two 21.5 gallon tanks. Good truck.
Let me know if you try to figure any other measurement somehow. I would like to know. I am about to install another tank where my spare was.

briwayjones 03-14-2007, 09:32 PM Now on my 2000 which of course technically has a 21 gallon tank I have gotten 24 gallons in it on many occasions.
J. Anthony 03-14-2007, 09:38 PM I think it would be who of me to take a look at the tank you have. I travel between North Carolina and Texas and I would like to have an aux tank. Now I thought about putting one where the spare is but if I have room I could remove mine put one like yours in and then go with a tank where the spare was. 21 gallons would help a lot.

midiout 10-09-2007, 09:21 AM I took my 2006 V6 EB Explorer for a oil change/tire rotation. It has 28,000 miles - all highway. They gave me a "service recommendation" which includes the following: drain and refill front/rear differ., transfer case, trans. flush, trans fluid additive, air filter, fuel filter, fuel injection cleaning wheel alignment, for a total of $840.41. The sheet they gave me was for "severe usage". I kmow about the trans should be changed at 30,000, but the diffs and transfer case ? If someone is to change the trans fluid, I'll have the dealer do it - saw how to do it yourself -complicated.
v1rotv2 02-15-2008, 09:44 PM that my 93' 4 door 4x4 has a 19.3 gal. fuel tank.
TJTrucker 07-12-2008, 01:11 PM Hello everyone, I've been a member of the forum for a while but have never posted till now. I'm a retired trucker aka "18 wheeler", although I had 30 wheels on mine. I've got a little project vehicle I'm playing with a 91 Explorer EB. Bought this thing for $100 and I've been repairing it over the last couple of years now. Being retired means i've got lots of time where I can tinker, but at some point I got frustrated because I can't seem to find the right answer to a problem. The Explorer is a fun vehicle to play with and I've been able to so far fix everything that has come along. But lately I've hit the dam wall on why my 91 won't start very easy at all.
Now I change the fuel pump when I had the tank out to replace the float on the fuel gauge sending unit, as the gaug wasn't working very good at all. So I did some preventative maintanence and replace the fuel pump with a brand new Walbro pump. I used the Walbro because I've had great sucess with them in the past. Now about three weeks after I changed the fuel pump the engine started getting harder and harder to start. I noticed a little puff of extra smoke when the engine started in the morning. Ok valve seals may need to be replaced. Then one day it just wouldn't start at all, so I did the normal diagnostics, I have a habit of changing fuel filters whenever I change fuel pumps so I knew there was no blockage there. Double checked the installation anyway, it's fine. So I replaced the fuel pump regulator, as it didn't pass the drop in pressure test. Now I had very good fuel pressure about 35 - 40 lbs drops down about 3-5 lbs depending on the rpm. Now the pressure is dropping ever so slowly with the key off/engine off. It takes about 3 to four hours for the pressure to fall to zero, so now I have to do the on/off with the key about 5 or 6 times to get it to start in the morning.
I suspect an injector, but I'm not positive, any suggestions?
Thanks, Al
