Curious what kind of MPG everyone is getting out of their 06's.

I have an 06 LTD 4x4, V8, 18" wheels - bone stock
Around town 14-15 actual - computer says 14.5-16
Highway - no trailer - 18-20 actual - computer says 19-21

Got as low as 14 actual on the highway, think it was because of the 35mph head wind.

I am a new Explorer owner. Our first tank of gas registered a whopping 11 MPG. Since my wife (stay at home Mom) drives it during the week mostly city, does that sound normal?

We own a V6 Eddie Bauer.

Thanks

My 2006 XLT has 3,000 miles and shows 16.5 mpg average since new according to the in-dash display. Mostly city driving stop & go. The mpg has increased slightly with the more miles driven. I plan to reset the mileage computer after the first oil change.

I also have a 2004 F150 5.4L regular cab 4x4 short bed with over 20,000 miles and I average 16 mpg around town, and 18-20 highway.

The mpg always seems to improve after the first 5,000 break-in miles.

My '06 Eddie with the V8 has been getting an average of 16.5 mpg with about 50% city/highway driving. I have 2,000 miles on the engine.

Zee,

Is that 16.5 on the computer or actual?

So i take it the computer read out isnt accurate? How do you tell? Anyway I am a new SUV owner, got my 06 Explorer XLT (Black) in March and I am loving it, according to the computer i am getting roughly 18-18.8 per gallon, i do mostly highway driving tho. How is the mileage computer reset?

Not the most accurate.

To determine MPG, divide number of miles traveled by number of gallons of gas used.

My computer is generally off by 1 mpg on the high side, so if it says 17 mpg my actual is about 16mpg. This bugs me more than it should but my Dad's Avalanche fuel estimates are always within 0.3 mpg and that is easily just the margin of error in the the level of fuel fill.

To reset the mpg just press the reset button on the dash when MPG is displayed on the info center.

My v8 Eddie ī06 has 3300 on the clock now. Average fuel is 15 mpg city and short distance overland ( below 20 miles one trip ), 13.5 - 13 mpg city use only ( stopīn go ) and 16.7 mpg highway ( 80 mls ). Fuel consumption decreased after the first 2000 mls ( donīt know when the fueltank will overflow ;) )

Display most times show between 0.1 and 0.5 mpg less than actual, could it be caused by the number of cold engine startups ? Guess it can be most accurate the less the startups are and the less city use is, caused by the overflow line and the amount backflowing fuel.

200 miles on my new 2006 EB Black Cherry loaded, and my 50-50 town-highway milage is currently 10.5 on the computer with the 4.6. Pretty impressive huh? (LOL) Doesn't run like a mustant either..

will start getting better from 500 mls on, at my 4.6 E.B. most happened between 3k and 4 k mls.

Just got back from a trip to the UP of Michigan, no trailer, just a cargo carrier in the hitch with a couple hundred pounds in it - 21mpg. Can't complain about that.

Actual or via the computer?

Actual was 20.89. Computer was 21.7

That was 60 miles of back roads to the house going 45-65 and 300 miles of highway cruise set at 75-77

I reset the trip computer 1,500 miles ago and have averaged 18.9 mpg. I have been using Citgo 87 octane and mixed city/highway driving. My V6 4x4 XLT Explorer now has about 4,500 miles.

Tested E-85-fuel ( Ethanol ) with my 4.6 Eddie 4x4 today. Av.mileage is 10 mpg ( !! ) , with regular fuel itīs at 17.3 mpg. Crazy.

Is it ok to run e85 in our Explorers? I thought they weren't set up for it.

Crizz
07-06-2006, 01:24 PM
yes, no, nes.... Normally the Explorers since 2002 are declared as FlexFuel-Vehicles, but my experiences today says : nope !

fuel consumption rioses up 50 % with e85, no firm shifts, gears up and down when longer in use ( e.g. > 30 mins trip , guess caused by drive-by-wire / torque-by-wire ), DTD 171 and 174 are posted ( fuel mix bank 1 / 2 too lean ), stucks in 2nd or 3rd gear when acc. outside of town ( must pull the lever from D to 3 and back to shift into the upper gears ) and lots more of crap ( sorry ). "Thinned" the e85 with regular fuel after 65 km ( 40 mls ) and refueled 14.5 litres ( = 10 mpg ). Very often throttle-control has been very sluggish, and restarting engine when hot most times it was like it misses fuel. Guess too much of the alcohol in the fuelline evaporated, it took up to 3 or 4 secīs before the engine was accelerating and really shown throttle response.

It was worth to check it, esp. because e85 is about 32 % cheaper then regular fuel over her.

Drivers book says nothing about e85-use, guess best would be to ask FoMoCo about e85 and the 2006 V8.

BTW : have tested all tunes of my XCal2 - results have been the same in all tunes, didnīt take much effect if stock calibration, reg.-tune or premium / torque-tune.

Hey,

Just got the EB V6 2006 and the computer says 13.5 MPG, which is kind of annoying since the sticker says 15/20 and we have done some highway.

Think it will improve with mileage over 3K? THe book says it will.

Ever here about the "tornado?" What do you think?

Don't get the Tornado...Seriously
Watched an infomercial investigation show and they the the tornado did more problems than good...

E-85-fuel shouldn't be used in a regular 4.6 Explorer. It's 85% Ethenol, 15 % unleaded gas. It's a wonder there are any fuel seals left. Don't use it unless the car is the Hybrid.

nyisles_99

Thought so on the Tornado. Will leave it alone.

As for E85 - oh well, wishful thinking. Good thing it's not in my area, or I would be pissed at the dealer.

only if it is flex fuel engine there should be a K in the middle of your vin if you have a flex fuel

After 5,000 miles of city & highway driving, I have been averaging 18.6 mpg according to the trip computer. I have seen as high as 22mpg on one tank of highway driving @ 75 mph average.

My vehicle is a 2006 XLT 4x4 V6 with the 17" aluminum wheels.

I really enjoy the smooth ride, smooth transmission shifting, and comfortable interior. I have only been to the dealer for 1 oil change @ 3,000 miles. No other problems or issues. I bought the Explorer as an extra vehicle to compliment my 2004 F150 4x4 reg cab, flareside. Both vehicles have been trouble free, and a pleasure to own.

Just a thought, I think the reason why people are reporting crappy MPGs for their first tank is this. Typically any car on a Ford lot is avail for test drive... no dedicated demos, you get the idea. I know when I test drive a car, I want to see what it can do, so I go balls to the wall w/ it. hence the initial 10mpg reading. :)

Makes a big difference where youīre driving. On flat land roads / highways youīll get a better economy than driving on mountain roads / hilly areas. So I guess fuel economy can only be compared when writing where the values have been driven.

Hey,

Try resetting the gauges on the "info" center. My wife did it after filling up yesterday, and what was originally reading 12.6 MPG is now reading 15.8. I only have 1600 miles on mine, but looking to do more accurate reads after the 3K mark.

BTW: Any idea of How much for a K&N Filter?
Any idea on where to get a hitch step for an 06 v6 EB? How much?

Thanks all!

Later,
Dan

My MPG keeps getting better. My around town is consistent at 14-15 but I just got 23mpg on the way home from our vacation home - 350 miles 250 of it highway going 75. I now have 13,000 miles on mine. My Accord V6 only got 28mpg on the same trip...

Forget K&N, use the KKM Intake-Kit. Filter is nearly the same, comes from Kurtz Kustomz w/ MAF-Adapter. Easy to install, excellent sound, better response than w/ default intake box & filter. Will find my experience in another thread about the KKM and XCal-II.

did mileage today on my wifes and got 14.7 mpg granted it only has 7xx miles on it so far, that was calculating it out without the computer in the truck....with the computer we were getting 20.9 on the highway doing 80 with 500 miles on it.
