easy enough I thought it might just be a bad connection or the switch was bad I checked both connections the one on the switch and the one on the fan motor neither were loose so Im thinking that the switch is going bad is this a good assement or is there something else I need to check first

I assume we are talkng about the blower fan. My only experience with an intermittent one involved hitting the dash or a bump and it would start up. Replacing the fan (engine compratment, firewall, passenger's side) fixed it.

I had the same problem yesterday...........so, I'm thinking:

I've had this problem before (fan won't work, switch in all positions). Last time........I left the switch on "MAX with the A/C ON"..........after driving for 10 miles or so..........it suddenly kicked on.

So, I'll put the switch "ON MAX" again...........humm......still not working.

So, I begin thinking:

It's possible that the elec. switch (bad connection) or the relay or the fan motor contact. Or bad ground or broken wire.

Perhaps, if I could test the fan? OK, I could run direct 12v see if the fan still works.

As for the switches.........I'll have to take the switch out of the dash. Then, I guess I could do an continuity test across the contacts w/ the switch in different positions.

Relay..........well KOEO........and test if I'm getting power (at both ends).

Then......it could also be that the reisistors that regulate the power (so fan can go slow, fast or very fast)..........may be burnt.........I'll have to find those resistors, first.

Wires or ground.........I'll have to test for that too.............most of the time I'm just "lucky."

Oh well.......it's working again.......so, I won't bother with it, there are a lot of other projects I'm working on.

thanks I was thinking it might just be the motor going bad mine does this some times when you hit a bump sometimes when you hit the brakes and some times when you forget to turn it off when you park today on the way home from work it didnt work at all any way Ill try testing every thing and see what comes up Ill keep you posted

Could be.......(I forgot to mention) just a bad connection. Where the wire is connected to the motor. Going over a bump or a sudden jar could be affecting the contact.

BTW.....it happened again, today. This happened just after spending a $390 to get the A/C fixed.

I'd be concerned if it didn't work for a week straight. Right now, I got a lot of other things to be worried about.

That's what mine was doing. It would work for a while, then quit. I'd drive around and it would just turn itself back on. It got progressively worse to the point I decided to do something about it, and it was the relay overheating and refusing to work.

Yes. That's the one that was fried in my truck...Blower randomly turned on and off (worked more often on lower settings than higher settings). I could tap the relay and change the behavior of the blower. New relay=smooth fan operation.

Yeah that's it. Heater/Blower relay. Mine had teh same problem & a new relay for $9.99 from Ford fixed it. It's located in the under hood fuse box. It's labled.

Been to the shop several times, no luck. They said it wasn't a pressure issue, or bad compressor. They thought it might be a switch, but ordered it 3 times and either never got the right one in, or it never did the trick. I eventually had to just pick up the truck before they figured it out. Any ideas? Not sure if i'm posting in the correct spot, but this thread seemed pretty close?

On the '91.....it's different than the '94.

On my 91 Mazda Navajo (and the explorers) there is a relay box underneath the power distribution box. In the relay box are the Fuel Pump, EEC Power and WOT relays (back-front). According to the Autozone schematic, there is no blower motor relay for the 91s (figure 8)

If some one has a real factory manual it could be verified.

When my blower motor went bad, it would work whenever I went over a bump, slammed the door or banged on the dash. Replacing it fixed all the problems.

OK..........I should have added that "I COULD BE WRONG......AS I DON'T OWN A '91 EXPLORER."

PS..........on my Chevy, it (blower motor) didn't work at all, switched in any position, or going over "rough roads," or "slamming the door", even tried the direct wire test. The direct wire test, was for me, the deciding factor to get a new blower motor. Anyway, I did as Shamaal did.

I just replaced the blower motor........and viola........it worked.

Changing a motor of course (most of the time) is more expensive than a relay.

My relay was bad. I replaced it today fan works like a brand new one now. Parts were 8.99 plus tax at local parts shop. Took me like 2 minutes to replace it. for those that have a 94 its number 28 in the relay box. Thanks for all the help.

I have a 96 with the exact same problem.Is the relay location the same for a 96 as for a 94.It was quoted as "Power Dist. box-Heater/blower relay #28".Looked under the hood didn't see the same set-up.Any help would be greatly appreciated.I'm in north-east going to start getting cold pretty soon.

Your location and number on the relay.............would/might/will.............be different.

I would guess that the set up is different.................though, the relay would probably "look similar." (After checking out the parts page on RockAuto.Com) So, that being said.............look on your wiring diagram.............it would possibly be described using, "similar terms." Then, trace the wires............to the relay.

Thanks Mark,I am having a problem with it being the relay.Again my blower stopped working,I pop the hood and gave the fan a good whack and presto it's running again. I think it could be a bad fan.Any opinions?

Well...........giving it a good wack, is something like giving the starter a good wack..........yes, I've done it too. Of course, it can be overdone...........don't ask me how I know.

Anyway, it could mean that, "it will soon fail" or "hey thanks, I needed that."

It's up to you. Though, after the wack test I'm thinking, "fan motor replacement time," rather than, "relay."

I've read several posts about AC/Heat blower intermittent. Mine did that now doesn't work at all. I want to try to replace the heater blower relay #28 in the power distriution box. Where can I get that part? Do I have to go to a ford dealer? Do I have to unhook the battery to prevent shocking myself? Does it just pop out and plug in? I have a 1994 Ford Explorer Limited.
