View Full Version : Axle gearing question Chad Nixdorf 06-22-2000, 07:20 PM Does anyone know if the 4cyl ranger or mazda came with 4:10 or 4:11 gears? If so what years/models? Thanks for the help. RangerX 06-22-2000, 09:17 PM According to the Standard Catalog of 4x4s, the 83-85 Rangers only came with 4 cyl and 3.45 gears. From 86-93 (the last year the book covers) 4.10 was an option, but it doesn't get specific enough to pair it with any particular engine. The same years (86-93) had three engines available. Some info for you, but no final answer. Also, the book only covers "American" 4x4s, so Mazda is not covered. I'm curious, what are you planning? Chad Nixdorf 06-22-2000, 11:04 PM I was checking for Rocky (rock883). We were thinking that finding a used axle with the 4:10's would be cheaper than installing new gears in his current rear. His explorer is a 2 wheel drive so he only needs to worry about the rear. I found the axle codes of the Ranger and BroncoII axles to look for. If we are lucky we can even find a limited slip w/ 4:10 gears. I think the axle shafts in the Rangers are 31 spline but I'm not sure. Do you know the answer to this one? If they aren't we can always swap the 31 splines out of the Explorer axle. Thanks for the help. Chad Scott B. 06-23-2000, 08:52 AM Sorry to have to tell you this, but Rangers use 28 spline axles, Explorers use 31 spline axles. Also, the Explorer houseing is wider than the Ranger housing. The good news is, there is a larger selection of traction aiding differentials for the 31 spline version of the 8.8. A really tight limited slip or locker would help that 2wd Explorer go a long way (probably farther than most stock 4wd) |
