I have a 2001 ford sportrac and was wondering if a 4.6L V8 would fit in place of the stock 4.0L. If someone has done this before please let me know. It's a 4x4 but I would like to make it 2WD and modify the 4.6L.
Thanks

not very easily at all
With enough time and $$$ and fabrication is can be done yes.
However your Sport trac is identical to any 95-01 Explorer under the hood.
You would be MUCH better off doing a 5.0L V8 conversion, getting everything you need from one truck, the entire drivetrain will basically bolt in, you will likely need to modify your rear driveshaft, but thats about it.

I wish I had that comparison pic of the 5.0 V8 and the 4.6 DOHC. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Envision This, your engine, valve cover to valve cover is 18 in. wide.
The 4.6 is 28

It's possible. Not the easiest thing in the world, but not impossible or overly expensive.

Just so everyone knows, I did not know that this was that easy until just an hour ago. I actually followed the link that jtsmith put up for the motor comparison, and then followed another link from that thread to the Ranger site. Looks like this actually is feasible. It's obviously not as easy as a 5.0L swap would be, but it is far from the huge project that many of us had assumed. Only thing that really needs to be modified is the heat/air box and the steering shaft. This definately isn't a weekend swap though.
If you look at the pics of the blue 4X4 ranger on the 2nd page of the thread I linked to, he even managed to modify to AC box and keep the air!
