I haven't used a Nikon, but I found this review:

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond40/

That site has very comprehensive reviews on most all digital cameras. I recently bought a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (400D).

I don't have a D40, but as a Nikon SLR user, my opinion is it's what to get if you want a small digital SLR camera. I think a more compact digital SLR is a logical step since digital cameras seem to be getting smaller all around. I found the other Nikon digital SLRs to be much too large and bulky versus their film SLRs, so if I were purchasing one, it would be the D40. Even with the release off the D40 though, the D80 and other high-end models show that they're on the way to 10MP and beyond, so right now the 6-6.2MP cameras seem like the current consumer/pro-sumer standard thats only going to be around a bit longer.

x2 Used a D70 over the summer as well as my Canon 350D, the D80 sucked, broke twice... I was not impressed.
