In preperation for the Colorado run, i just got a new CB and antennae. Im having a little problem though, whenever i hit the gas, i can hear a squeal, i let off the gas it goes down. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Possibly a bad ground? Also is it better to have the power line of the radio directly go to the battery? Any additional tips for better performance please let me know. Thanks for your help!

Rod go to the "Tips" section where Rick wrote an article on the interference from the fuel pump. Bad news and bad news, I couldn't get Ford to pay for it and it's an in-tank fuel pump so I didn't get the mod done.

I mitigated it two ways, both learned by searching this forum. There's not a whole lot of activity on this forum; you might as well pull up all the old posts and you'll find useful CB info going back over a year here.

The first is by connecting straight to the battery. My firewall was so solid though I couldn't even get a wire through, so I routed it to the driver's side door post, under the weatherstripping, and out the front down in the crack between the front fender body panel and hood. Put an inline fuse in and hook up directly to the battery.

I also bought an interference filter of some sort from Radio Shack designed to lessen interference.

These helped, but I still have some interference. It's not bad enough to drop the fuel tank though.

There may be other issues in your application relating to antenna ground, etc.

Thanks for your help Gerald, i will definetly do what you suggested.

One thing about the antenna, its a mag mount on the top of my truck, its doesnt have a ground, just a cable going to the radio unit. Does that sound right?

Once again thanks for the help and see ya in CO.

I run a mag mount Lil' Wil. For interference purposes it will help you, since the mag mount won't get as clean a ground to the vehicle as a permanent whip setup drilled and bolted onto the body or bumper. So you'll get less interference, but not as good performance as the other kind.

Rod G (PEZ),

Your squeal could possibly be alternator "whine" . Since it appears to vary with engine RPM, that's a good indicator. The dreaded fuel pump noise isn't usually a squeal, more like a "Hash", and its a pretty constant level regardless of RPM. There are alternator noise filters available, even at Radio Shack, as Gerald says.

a Couple of thoughts, Run at least #12, and I prefer #10 wire, both positive and negative (1e: 2 Wires) direct from the battery. Another trick is to lightly twist the wires around each other. about two or three turns per foot, as they pass thru the engine compartment. This reduces the inductive pick-up of transient noise from the engine igntion and electronics.

Good practice to fuse the line as close as possible to the battery. Another fuse (probably supplied with the radio) near the radio is good extra protection.

Mag mount antennas seem to get sufficient "Ground Plane" effects from the car roof, so you won't need to ground the antenna further, as long as the shield in your coax antanna cable is good. Try not to "pionch" the cablre too much where you bring it into the car, as yhis will effect performance! I've had excellent results with mag mount antennas. The center of the roof (approx), is the quietest place possible, as far as vehicle produced static, for the antenna.

Hope this helps.
