View Full Version : Hide-A-Way Strobes - New Install
filleyboy 01-26-2007, 04:14 PM Ok, I have a couple of questions about installing these things. I had a set in my last vehicle, but the wiring job was crappy (done by me) and the drill job into the headlights was crappy... I also only put them in the front.
I was looking at my 2002 Explorer XLS without Subwoofer in the back, and I was trying to figure out how I was going to wire everything before they arrive. BTW I got the LightningX from www.fireoutfitters.com, they look pretty cool and I like the idea of the switches that comes with it.
Now my main questions:
1.) How do I run the wires through to the tail lights. I am unsure of the mount location for the power supply, but I am trying to figure out how to get the wires to go outside the vehicle through the hole where the factory tail light wires go through the body at?
2.) Where should I mount the power supply and run the wiring inside the car? (I already have my main power wire for my sub running on the driver side, and the signal cables on the passenger side) Also, can I just splice into the power lead from the sub or should I run a seperate wire?
3.) Best way to drill the holes in the headlights and tail lights?
4.) I have 6 strobes 60W system. Should I put one set in the reverse lights, the other in the low beam area, and the others in the side markers?
Thanks for the help and if I come up with some more questions I will definately ask.

filleyboy 01-30-2007, 09:13 AM Nothing? LOL someone has got to know something.
Texplorer 01-30-2007, 10:11 AM 1.) Just make a little cut in the gromet where the factory tail light wires go through the body and run the strobe cable through it.
2.) You can pretty much mount it anywhere you want, thats totally up to you, I have mine under my back seat beacause its rightin the middle of the truck and the 15 feet of strobe cable can easily reach the headllights and tail lights. DO NOT splice into the power lead for your sub, run a new power line for your strobes.
3.) 1" hole saw is the best way, you can pick them up at any hardware store. I drilled my hole out, put the strobe in and siliconed it up to make sure it was water tight, havent had a single problem with them.
4.) I would say, run 2 up to the headlights and 4 back to the tail lights. Ill put up a vid of mine so show how how they look like that.
filleyboy 01-30-2007, 12:16 PM Cool, thanks. I got the holes drilled and the lights in already. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to get the wires from under the hood inside. The grommets I used for my amp is very tight and the wires won't fit.
I read that you can put them through the driver side door where there is a grommet hole and I pulled it out and could get the wires inside, so I know that should work fine for the wires, as I don't want to drill the firewall. The only problem now is, I can't find the wires after i push them through that hole, there is a metal plate against the driver side kickpanel where the e-brake is attached and I can't figure out how to get the plastic kickpanel off so I can get more access.
Plus on top of all these problems, the wind-chill factor where I live is -5 degrees so I can't fell my hands, I'm thinking I am just going to wait for a better day in a couple of weeks.
But if anyone has any tips on getting the plastic kickpanel off, I think I have the rest figured out.
shortstack 10-14-2008, 01:43 AM bump, we need videos
CDW6212R 10-14-2008, 08:51 AM I've done it on two vehicles, it's not hard at all for the basic systems. The Gall's catalog is the best place to find that stuff.
Uafan 10-14-2008, 09:01 AM Should have gone with the new LAWs (LED A Ways), so much brighter, and you can effectively get them in red or blue without them looking like ass.

Blee1099 10-14-2008, 08:42 PM I miss having all those lights on my truck.. Man I should re-install some of them on the new rig.. Though I don't work for the company anymore but still have the business cards.. lol
CDW6212R 10-14-2008, 09:47 PM Those are very good.
Can I find a sign to light up in the daytime that says "Say moron, if the white strobe lights are on, then it's a no passing zone and I am going to turn very very soon, stay back."
Uafan 10-14-2008, 11:22 PM Hahaha.

I know where you can get a amber LED sign made to say that :D
mweiss 10-27-2008, 02:37 AM That's a police or emergency vehicle in the video, yes?
I'd love to have my brake lights flash like that (I might not be still suffering from injuries from a high speed rear end collision last year if the cell-phone-talking woman who hit me had noticed the flashing strobes instead of the static factory brake lights). Unfortunately, it's probably very illegal in most states for a non-government vehicle to use.
ericautopart 10-27-2008, 09:51 AM If you kept it clear/amber in the rear I don't see why it would be illegal. In NJ I don't think you'd have a problem and this is a nazi state. I've got blue/clear LEDS myself (for vol. FD) and the law states 1 blue rotator in the dash. I've never had a problem w/ the cops before.
Uafan 10-27-2008, 11:05 AM I would stick with only using 4 strobeheads instead of 6, being as you have a low power box (60w) if you went with a 90w box, I would say but the other 2 in, but it will dim them up a little if you add all 6 going.
shortstack 11-12-2008, 02:11 AM got some, well there not hide-a-ways but there led lights :D here's a video

Who makes them ?
zonianbrat 11-12-2008, 06:52 AM I dont know if they are illegal where I am at now in Colorado but I used to live in Alabama and my buddy had 4 strobes 2 in the headlights and 2 in the tails on his cutlass and he got a ticket for having them on while on the road. The cop said they were distracting to other drivers. I do know you could not have red, yellow or blue unless you were an authorized emergency vehicle. Hell I had 2 5" yellow neon tubes in my camaro down by your feet on either side of the cubby hole unde the radio and the cops tried to give me crap about those once but nothing came of it. I do like the way they look on the X
shortstack 11-12-2008, 10:38 AM on ebay just put "led strobe" and their about $20 or $25.
amber is legal i think everywhere cause thats what tow trucks use. as for white/blue/red i could see why they might not be cause thats what cops use.
Texplorer 11-12-2008, 12:11 PM Amber is NOT legal everywhere, tow trucks have special permits that allow them to use amber as a warning light. Same goes for construction vehicles.
Bill Kemp 11-12-2008, 04:49 PM I would think that strobes are illegal, on the road, everywhere. Unless you are an emergency or safety type veh.
You gotta admit that they would definitely be distracting to other drivers no matter what color they are. Turning them on on the road is like putting up a sign to the cops that says "I want a ticket".
Blee1099 11-12-2008, 05:41 PM Some people say you need a DOT permit for amber some say you don't. On the Explorer I had the reverse lights set to strobe as well as soon reverse was engaged. I used mine many times when I came upon a accident and I was the first person there as a non-fire/police/ems responder just to get people to slow down. Most cops might question you for having them but in my case I had a business card showing who I was and they understood I was just assisting them until they arrived to take over the scene. If your gonna use strobes, use them responsibly, don't turn them on the public roadways unless you have a reason to or are a qualified member of a fire/police/ems department.
CDW6212R 11-12-2008, 05:48 PM As a mailman I use them every day, but that's during the day and they are white. At night strobe lights are extremely distracting. I have them in my 95 Crown Vic that I used to deliver with. I turned them on one evening outside of a bar where a friend hangs out. It got his attention, and cleared out the bar. That was a regular "casual drug" location. People confuse white and amber strobe lights with red and blue. My explorer is much better for delivering mail, and people used to pull over when I drove the white Crown Vics on the route.
Bill Kemp 11-12-2008, 08:59 PM Sorry S_Stack I must have got carried away by all the buttons on the keyboard...
Just wanted to make the point that if you use strobes on the road you COULD be in for trouble. There are times when, at the discretion of the cop, they will let it go. But it isnt a given that its OK
shortstack 11-13-2008, 01:45 AM haha not problem, but yes dont drive them to be "cool" only use them as hazards lights
CDW6212R 11-13-2008, 06:34 PM I had a reason to use them tonight. A car coming at me down a hill slid straight off of the road into a tree. The road is very slick when wet, and we got a little rain today. I parked near the curve where both directions could see me, and turned on my flashers and four strobes. It is much better at night than simple emergency flashers.
I was glad that the guy slid across my path instead of saving it and hitting me head on.
