Hi All
I've just bought a 60k mile Explorer Sport and would like to know it's towing capacity. I have a trailer that, fully loaded will be approx 3500lbs. Will I be able to cope with that? Also are there any quick and simple ways to improve the stock performance - engine chips, intake systems? Any that you can recomend?
Many thanks in advance

Oh yeah, it's a 5 speed manual.

Here is a link to the ford towing guide for 2003. @002 should be similar, but you should check it out with the Ford Dealer:

I have an '02 with a v6 and the towing package. I tow a small camper with a dry weight of 2600 lbs but it is probably over 3000 when I tow once I get all my gear and stuff in it. I have had no problems at all with it in that area. It actually handles it very well. I do not have a lot of power left over but it has no trouble maintaining highway speed.

AIRBLUE, i dont think negative OPINIONS and yelling(caps) is going to benefit anyone. If you dont have anything productive, insightful or NICE to say, why even post?

well robbie my thin skinned friend, I will guess that you have not replaced your transmission at 83000 and now at 103,000 are having more problems. if ford would be a little more customer friendly and own up to its short comings or maybe better said own up to what should be a recall I would be a little nicer. oh i forgot to mention the front and rear wheel bearings and the rear diff whine and the rear axle seals.
i will speak with my wallet next and go back to a chevy trailblazer which i have had both a 2002 and a 2005 with nothing ever going wrong let alone something on the scale of the $5000 dollars worth of stuff this explorer has needed.
i speak in all lowercase and wish not to hurt your feelings

Sorry about yur luck, Have fun with all the Blazer issues your going to run into , Ive got both an 1998 Blazer an an 2003 Explorer the explorer has been an overall cheaper vehicle to own then the 98 Blazer and to top it off the explorer gets better mileage

OK, buh-bye now. :wavey:
As for the original question regarding towing capacity, the vehicle is rated to tow 3175kg (7000 lbs). Your vehicle should be just fine, as long as you don't exceed the capacity of the hitch bumper, which is generally only around 2500 or 3000 lbs. If you need to tow more weight, you'll want to install an aftermarket class 3 receiver on the back of the vehicle.
Good luck! :)
