When i went to turn the key over to start my 1991 explorer and was just starting to catch there was this electrical popping sound and then white smoke started pouring out from under the hood. i then started it after the smoke went away and it started but while in park it was jumping (like the timing was off) and acting like it wanted to cut off. and then when idrove it there was a light hissing sound comming from behind the steering wheel area. does anyone know what this could possibly be?
please help

Hissing sound may be a vacuum hose came off the tree on the rear of the back of the driver side valve cover. Loss of vacuum causes surging and other odd problems.
Never heard it to be associated with white smoke though - steam?. Was the exhaust manifold hot? Could be a blown automatic transmission modulator vacuum line spraying auto transmission fluid on a hot manifold. Or a PCV valve vacuum hose.
Any smells? Beware a gasoline smell, it may mean injector fuel rail problems.
I wouldn't drive until you trace the source of the smoke. Should be fairly obvious.
