I was planning on getting the BFG All-Terrains, but after looking at them they don't look like they would be to good in wet weather. Reading some threads here confirmed that, so I can't justify spending that much.

I live in NC so we don't get the snow blizzards like those up north. And, I don't plan on doing any serious off-roading, but would like the option for some minor off-roading without slipping to much. I have AWD and do like to use it from time to time. I'd probably need a pretty tough tire, I tend to corner rather fast.

What options, no more expensive then the BFG AT, are there? The Bridgestone Revos are a little out of my budget. How are the Yokohama Geolandar A/T Plus II? I read on one thread they were a little soft. I would get the Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT if I could find them locally.

I have Dueler REVO's, from Tire Rack they're not too expensive, great in rain and pretty good off-road but frankly I'm not happy with the treadwear. They seem very sensitive to the vehicle being out of alignment also.
Wild Country XTX's have a very similar tread and don't cost as much since they're sort of generic. I had those on my old Ranger and liked them.

I have the Yokos - i dont like them at all. I'm just going to wear them out until I cup them too bad. They get a 2 out of 10 from me.

What about the BFG Long Trails? I had a set on my 93 X and they seemed alright, but I had nothing to really compare them with at the time.

I like my dunlop radial rovers, They are many years old so the new ones may be crap.

The new RVXTs are actually (and surprisingly) good wet weather performer. The new RVXT are totally different from the older Radial RV models.

We get a lot of rain here in Vancouver, Canada and I was impressed at the performance of these tires on large puddles and semi-flooded streets.

The open thread design allows water to be "evacuated" from the bottom of the tire. The continous open pattern doesn't allow the tire to be lifted up and hydroplane unlike a normal street tire with a 5th continous tread block on the center.

They are of course AT tires so they are not as quiet as regular street tires but they are quieter that most AT's.

Also if you get the LT version - the tread depth is at least a half in to 17/32

I had the Dueler REVO's on my '01 Explorer, and they worked very well in the rain. Heckuva lot better than my BFG A/T ko's did....

Well I bit the bullet and went ahead and made an appointment with Discount Tires to install the BFG All-terrians. I went ahead and got the 30x950r15 instead of 235/75, to counter the lack of wet traction. Now I'm just going to hope that when I pull up their not going to refuse to put the larger tires on.

If I'm going from 235/75R15 to 30/9.5, do I need to worry about the transmission shift points? I'm not as concerned about the speedo, but I don't want to damage my transmission or anything else. Based on 1010tires.com calculator the tires would have a 3.74% larger diameter.

You'll be fine. I'm running 31x10x15's on mine.

With a 5.0 you have more torque to offset the diference.

Well not only would Discount Tires not install larger tires (or smaller tires) then OEM, they also wouldn't install A/T tires. Fortunately, Merchants just happened to have the tires on offer for the same price.
