I am trying to determine what year AL4D transmission i should get to replace the current transmission on a 91 Ranger with the 3.0 L engine. My tranny was designed when max speed limits were 55. My goal is to replace my current tranny with a tranny that has a higher over drive ratio to bring down my RPM to about 2,000 at 65 - 70 MPH. Currently it is approx 3,000 RPM at 70 MPH. And yes, the legal speed limit in my "neck of the woods" is 70 MPH.

There are other factors involved such as the rear gear ratio, tire size, wind resistance, vehicle weight, flat or incline in the road, etc. Make sure that your filter, and fluid are clean, bands and kickdown cable are properly adjusted, and your VSS, TPS, and modulator are working properly.

It suggest changing your axle gearing to adjust rpms, rather than searching for a better ratio trans. Do you know what axle gear you have?
My wife's 92 Explorer has the A4LD, and has ~2000 rpm at 65-70, with 3.27 gears.

All A4LDs I believe have the same gear ratios. You can do two things to lower the Rpms at a given speed. 1 change the gears in the rear axle or 2 put bigger tires on it. For what it is worth I am at about 3500 at 65mph. works great on the trail but sucks on the highway.

I can't drive 65, or was that 55?:)
Actually 3,000 rpm at 70 is not all that bad but I would suggest going to taller tires if you want to drop the rpm at 70. Going to taller differential gears would be the next choice. Just remember that no matter what you do to lower the rpm at 70, you are going to lose power (torque) to accelerate and climb hills.

Wow! You got me beat. I think I'm at about 4500-5000 at 40-45mph. And thats going down hill with a tail wind. :D

I have a manual transmission and 4:10 gears with 235R 70x16 tires and I am turning about 2500 at 65 and 3000 at 80.
