View Full Version : Tires! You make the call!
Roadking 08-14-2000, 07:41 PM Yes, I have the recalled ShreadRocks that have to come off.
The Ford dealer is being very accommodating, he is giving me the choice of five different tire brand replacements.
I hear allot about Michelin's LTX AT. Good? Bad? Ugly!
The others are Bridgestone, B.F.Goodrich, Uniroyal and Goodyear.
I drive about 60%highway-20%city-20%off road.(mud, snow, and ice)
I know this topic has been beaten to death.
Any tribal knowledge?
I would appreciate it.
Thanks!!
Take a look at http://www.tirerack.com it has tire surveys on AT tires. The best rated is the LTX AT.
JWood 08-15-2000, 10:08 AM Everyone I have spoken to, given the same choices you mentioned here in Houston, recommend the Michelin. The Ford dealers I have visited have only been offered the LTX M+S ,which is more of a highway tire and ok for dirt roads.
The AT would be better for rocks and rougher terrain, from what I am told, but yes you have a choice. It just depends on what tires they receive, when you are called to come back, and how quick you want to settle......
Gary Steeber 08-15-2000, 10:32 AM Roadking,
Why not get the BFG AT KO's? This is your opportunity to get probably the best all around tire available.
They're good on the street and great off-road.
William Schumacher 08-15-2000, 11:24 AM I second Gary,if... they give you the BFG T/A ko's,then I say......go get them, they are by far the best all around tire I have had, great on and off road tire, this is a true light truck tire (not soft)and will last a long time.
BFG AT KO all the way.
It's the small percentage of the time that you're out in no man's land and get stuck because you don't have the right tires. Why take that chance!
It's also great in the snow and rain.
Roadking 08-15-2000, 02:38 PM Thanks everyone for your TRIBAL knowledge.
Thats exactly what I was looking for.
The best advice comes from someone who uses the product.
Surveys are a good tool to start with, but I look for someone who RIDES these tire everyday and still has good things to say about them.
I called the Ford dealer and ordered the B.F.Goodrich AT KO's
They will be installed in about two weeks.
ThAnKs BiG!!
RandyM 08-15-2000, 02:54 PM I just got the BFG AT KO tires installed on my 99 XLT and am a bit puzzled by the inflation pressure needed. The dealer has them at 35 psi which he says is the BFG recommended pressure for LT235/75/15 as they say to add 8-10 psi to the Ford recommended 26 psi. However, everyone I know had the OEM tires at 30-32 psi, so adding the 8-10 number to that gives 38-42 psi for these LT tires. Any of you guys running the KOs have a recommendation from practical day-to-day experience with these tires? Thanks.
Goober 08-15-2000, 03:32 PM Although mine aren't stock size, I run them at 34 psi. When they were installed, the tech aired them up to 40 psi and the about bounced my neck off on every bump. :bounce: Since I drive the same route to work, I'd judge the tires on each trip and before leaving the next morning lower the pressure til I hit a good medium. The noise level is about the same at both psi's, so that's not really a problem. Mileage has suffered, but that could be just because of the larger tires in general. As far as wear, it is too early to tell but they don't seem to have develpoed any problem with wear spots.
I may be mistaken, but isn't the psi on the sidewall the max psi for the max load? I need to look a little closer...
stevesxlt 08-15-2000, 07:23 PM Anybody have experience on the Yokohamas? Just replaced my ATX's...couldn't wait.
William Schumacher 08-15-2000, 10:11 PM I have my ko's (although they are 2" larger than stock at 34 psi,I may go down to 32psi,what's listed is the max for the tire ??,inother words, don't put more than... (65 psi on mine) . truck rides fantastic but I will experiment and optimize the psi in them.
Roadking 08-17-2000, 02:12 PM I just got a call from the Ford dealer.
The have no more 235 size tires of any kind.
I'm number 72 on the list and I have to take what ever tire brand they get in! They figure 3 to 4 months wait.
Oh! Boy!
The tire store down the street has 20 Michelins, and other brands that would fit, but I have to go through a Ford or Firestone dealer as of 8/16/00.
Now we have to rent a van to go on vacation. I won't subject my family to a truck with recalled tires.
I have had it with Firestone and Ford!! They both have crappy customer service, and the Firestone dealers act like they never heard of the recall. Dumb and Dumber!!!
Sorry, just venting lots of anger!!!!
PhxExplorer 08-17-2000, 03:17 PM Well, sorry to hear about that! That really bites the big one. If it helps any, I have the Michelin LTX A/T tires and really like them for both on and off-road. Was really surprised how well they worked off-road though. So if you don't have the choice of the BFG's, I think I would definitely go with the Michelins.
P.S. I don't think I will ever put a different brand of tire on my truck, that's how happy I am them.
2001ExpSport 08-18-2000, 12:38 AM I know your feeling about Ford service, it totally sucks. They forget about you as soon as they hang up the phone. Ford service definitely leaves something to be desired.
Firestone on the other hand was very willing to help, too bad I have the 16's. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif
Okrazie1 08-18-2000, 05:16 AM I had the exact opposite response in service. It took a week to even get Firestone to look at my tires, and all they did was tell me it was going to be at least a month before they would even think about replacing the tires. They didn't check the pressures like they were supposed to. They also told me I couldn't get a refund if I bought them elsewhere. So I went to the Ford dealer and was told it would be no problem replacing them next week.
ocdesigns 08-25-2000, 06:32 PM yup.. firestone service bites... they are hella rude. So I said screw them and went to goodyear to replace the tires. They were pretty cool and were willing to try the 31's if they fit before selling me 30s. ford dealership is all right. they are just all ways swampt so it takes some patience.

Firestone has extended the $100 reimbursement indefinately. At least that's what the media & the Firestone guy told me...
Hi everyone I turned in my old ATX's today and I am going to send Firestone the recall papers I hope they take care of me and give me some money back on my Goodyears that would be great The Goodyear MT/R's are real cool I love them off road.
2001ExpSport 08-25-2000, 10:15 PM Any of you seen the new Michelin commercial with the Explorer on the salt flats? Pretty big bust on Firestone if you ask me. Looks like Firestone lost that contract....
