Anyone know ballpark how much retro-fit windows cost? I need to replace a bunch of double-hungs and I've heard retro-fits are the way to go in this situtation.

I need to replace a bunch of double-hungs and I've heard retro-fits are the way to go in this situtation. Tbars4 04-29-2007, 06:07 PM rule of thumb is about 5-10 grand a normal house for all the windows and sliders, but there are also alot of options for upgrades...if you go through home depot, beware...try to find others in your area that have done this and get all the info you can...this is a consumer problem item, rip off artist and people who get into it and then close their business....a friend of mine owns 5 window company's in the o.c. area... BrooklynBay 05-17-2007, 11:15 PM Windows are about $200-up. Andersen windows are wood on the inside, and cost double this amount. I like vinyl casement windows. Some people like the type which go up, and down. Some like sliding windows. Make sure that everything is capped, and caulked properly. Don't take short cuts reusing old, cracked mouldings. People call me sometimes to replace the spiral sash pieces since they break a lot. Tbars4 05-17-2007, 11:21 PM did you see all the windows and doors in the pics of my truck in the wherehouse??? thats one of my buddy's shops i was talking about...maybe i can get you hooked up....if you want to send me some measurements section525 05-28-2007, 10:00 PM Snow-balled. :us: New windows turned into new siding, which turned into adding insulation. So I tear the asbestos tiles off. They were nailed to wood shingles (which you can see in the right side of the pic). Pulled those off and they were nailed to 1"x12" board. Pulled those off and of course there was no insulation. Ordered the 3 front windows... no longer need retro-fit. :p: RockRanger 05-28-2007, 11:39 PM I hate lath and plaster. section525 05-28-2007, 11:44 PM I hate lath and plaster. I'm probably going to tear out that wall that you see there and replace it. It suffered some cracks when the windows came out. Also there's about two places in the ceiling that need to come out.. which means two whole ceilings need to come down. :( What's your plan this week, Matt? :D section525 05-29-2007, 12:21 AM DO NOT get caught putting the asbestos tiles in the trash its like a $25000 dollar fine! What do you do with them? I stacked them inside the entry way so the city wouldn't see them laying around out front. tdavis 05-29-2007, 01:18 AM Double bag it, and check the local hazardous waste site. Here in West Contra Costa, they will accept it at the local hazardous waste site, in small quantities. I have that crap on the floor, and it's slowly coming up from age. I plan to reseal what hasn't worked loose back down to the floor shortly. ErickSaint 05-29-2007, 10:35 PM Up here you aren't supposed to remove them at all, just supposed to side over them. To remove means calling an abatement company, which means high dollar. section525 05-29-2007, 10:40 PM Up here you aren't supposed to remove them at all, just supposed to side over them. To remove means calling an abatement company, which means high dollar. Probably here too. :p: tdavis 05-30-2007, 01:31 AM Actually, it may be legal for him to remove the asbestos himself, if he is the owner of the building. It's really up to county code - There is no state or federal code restriction that I could find. If the siding is not breaking up, it's not considered hazardous. Call the local code officer, and the local dumps to see what they say. BrooklynBay 05-30-2007, 08:22 AM If you call, don't say that you've already ripped it off. Just say that you have a question, and don't give any name or address. You don't want them to send an inspector over, and issue a fine. section525 10-28-2007, 06:15 PM So Sarah and I put the windows in a couple months ago. I hired my buddy to tear out the lath and plaster and re-drywall. He worked on it last Wednesday so I swung by on Saturday to check it out. Looked good. But the place was a mess? So apparently a bum had broken out two windows in the back and decided to tear the place apart... and then sleep there for the night. I had some beer and pizza from... August. Which he ate and drank. Some ding dongs and donettes too. You can see how he dragged all this junk to where he was sleeping. Sarah's family photos were spread out on the floor. Definitely creepy. He used the canvas tarp for the dump trailer as a blanket. Then he stole my DeWalt flashlight, drill, all the batteries, and the chargers. WTF. He left the sawz-all, two skil saws, DeWalt vac, and other misc tools. It sucks cause I only had about 15 minutes of use on that drill. :( So then I had to board up all the windows and now it looks even more like an abandoned house. At least the windows and drywall looks good! ErickSaint 10-28-2007, 08:45 PM Looks good. Sucks about your stuff. Could have been worse tho, looks like there is a lot more stuff in there for crack heads to make money on, surprised they didn't come back and clean you out. We have a few of those cheaper gang boxes like from HD or Lowes, at the bottom is 4 75lb steel plates, makes it a bit harder to carry out the whole shootin match. We usually try to chain it to something as well. For a while I was doing a lot of rehab work in the inner city, learned these lessons quickly. section525 10-28-2007, 09:28 PM Take the positive with the negative. :p: Bigger, badder kit. ErickSaint 10-28-2007, 09:29 PM Bigger n' badder indeed, nice upgrade. RockRanger 10-29-2007, 12:52 AM Take it back and get a Li-Ion kit. Once you use them you will never want a Ni-cad kit again. Sucks about the break in. Is the drywall getting any texture or is it going to be smooth? techieman33 10-29-2007, 09:11 AM Take it back and get a Li-Ion kit. Once you use them you will never want a Ni-cad kit again. Sucks about the break in. Is the drywall getting any texture or is it going to be smooth? x2 go for the Li-Ion stuff. buckshotmudder 11-02-2007, 02:52 PM sucks about the break in.. what type windows did you finally decide on? I might have overlooked it if you mentioned tdavis 01-11-2008, 06:45 PM Take it back and get a Li-Ion kit. Once you use them you will never want a Ni-cad kit again. Sucks about the break in. Is the drywall getting any texture or is it going to be smooth? I just found this out - with dewalt 18v tools cordless tools, you can run either battery type with them. Yup, you can mix the lithium batteries with the old nicad batteries! All you need a different charger, and the NANO batteries. No other changes. |
