I've read about you can run 31's with no problem with 3.73 gears but what about 32's?
I get like 20 miles to the gallon and the only modification I have to the engine is K&N w/ modified air box.
If I get 32's will I have to regear to keep this and if I do get 31's will I see any loss?

I have 32" ATs on stock rims on my 91. I get 18 out on the road up and down the AZ Mountains and 16+ around town haulin' the kiddies with the A/C on full blast. I have not run a tank through the superchip on the highway yet to check milage. I hope to do a mini run this weekend for opening archery season in the mountains.

I have 32" AT's on my 1991 with stock rims. I get 18 on the highway and 16+ around town with the a/c running. I don't mind the loss so much do to the added clearance and look.

What gears do you have?

kubben, I have 3:55 with standard 235/75-15 tires and I get 18.5 in town and 21 to 22 mpg on the interstate (SOHC engine, no mods). I plan on changing to 31's soon. I think you should be fine with 32 (if they fit :D ) and 3:73 regarding milage. Power/acceleration will be an other topic. If you don't do any fourwheeling and your main goal is a good milage, go with a street tire that's not too wide and inflate at about 32 psi (check for even wear).

And get rid of your cool roof rack when you don't need it; this gives you about 1 mpg at high speed.

No I do a lot of off roading so street tires is a no go.
But mileage is still important to me, I'm in school still and make long hauls. So gotta find the facts before I whip out the check book.

kubben,

I have the 32's with 3.73 and though the mileage has suffered some, it isn't bad(provided you aren't pounding the throttle). Dead stop accceleration is not the best, but as heavy as this thing is I don't expect to go like a viper. I have only been able to do light wheeling lately( not even into 4L) but it seems to do well. If your doing crawling, you'd probably want to go to 4.10( probably best combo for mileage/power) or even 4.56(mileage will suffer). I plan on getting 4.10's later, but I just shelled out $2500 for school(5 classes). Dreaming,.... only one more year.... Anyway, just get the one that suits your needs. My $0.02

You get about 16 MPG highway?
That is what most people told me they get.
3.73 gears, 32's, 4.0, 16 MPG highway.
Maybe if I put some mods on the engine I could make up for it. Cheaper and easier than regearing.

I have tried variuos things such as that, but haven't really seen much difference. I got the K&N, Bosch +4 plugs, Splitfire wires and it has gotten the response, mileage hasn't reallt improved. The largest increase I got was from using Texaco gas( shocked me ). I went from 18.5(stock truck) to 15-16 (lifted) then added the above mentioned stuff( no difference) to about 17.5 +/- from using the gas. It may have something to do with the combination of added things plus different gas to bump it back up, but I'm really not that sure. I guess new wires and plugs can't hurt.
