View Full Version : 03 Ranger XLT DD/Tow Rig
95offroadx 05-29-2007, 12:06 PM Well my parents went in with me on my new 2003 Ford Ranger Xlt 4x4 extended cab. Its white with dark gray/black interior. The basics like manual door locks, and manual windows. I got it with 90,000 miles. But heres my favorite parts. Its a 4.0 sohc with a 5spd manual tranny behind it! I didnt drive it much yet. But the little i did. I layed some nice rubber in 1st and chriped 2nd. This truck supposely runs mid 15's in the 1/4 miles stock. Which is great for a 6cyl truck. It also has a towing package with 4.10 gears! I needed something with a towing package because I soon want to trailer my explorer on trips and such. With the 4.10 gears i dont think i should have a probably of hitting my 0-60 in 6 sec goal(after some modifying).
I got a lot of plans for it. Most of which are performance. Such as a intake, 65mm or 70mm 4.6 mustang tb, performance tuner/chip, lightning style exhaust. Also a hurst shifter and stiffer sway bars.
But there should be a few exterior and interior changes.
Pics coming soon

Its a 03 Xlt extended cab 4x4. Best part! 4.0sohc with a 5spd manual tranny and 4.10 gears! This thing can move pretty damn good. Its open though so im doing some peg leggers.
sn0border88 06-02-2007, 08:08 PM Just my .02, your gonna have a hard time towing an explorer with that if you get on any kind of hills.
schmidlkofer 06-02-2007, 08:11 PM true that.
95offroadx 06-02-2007, 11:10 PM ahh..I really dont think so, Have you ever driven one like this? It has plenty of power with the 4.10's. I just need to work on my driving, Its the first stick truck i ever had, but im getting a little better haha.
sn0border88 06-02-2007, 11:41 PM No, but I do know I tow with a 99 PSD 7.3 with cold air and exaust, and going up a big hill on the way to paragon I have a hard time keeping 45 in 4th gear (4 spd with overdrive manual). I know a ranger probably wouldnt make it in 3rd or 2nd for that matter. Maybe 1st in 4 low.
but nice looking truck anyways.
I would look to see what its rated towing capacity is.
95offroadx 06-03-2007, 12:05 AM must be a steep hill. My explorer and trailer, should wieght 5,000lb total. What gears are in the f250? Im also going to mod the ranger. Nothing big, just like a intake, exhaust, shifter, and a chip to remove the 90mph speed limiter. After those mods i really dont think i will have much of a problem.
Besides max towing in Lbs is 5,600lbs.

Actually your max towing is only 3080, if you had a auto then it would be 5560.

I'll bet your Explorer alone weighs 5000. Doesn't a stock Ex weigh ~4800?

More then that I think. I told the wife she could have a newer explorer if it could tow enough to tow my explorer. Even with a V8 it maxes out at about 7000lbs.:( So there is now way a ranger is going to tow a explorer. Your better off using the explorer to tow the ranger.
95offroadx 06-03-2007, 05:14 PM well i still need a trailer before i can tow my explorer.. i though 1st gens wieghed in at 4,200
redranger4.0 06-03-2007, 06:08 PM well i still need a trailer before i can tow my explorer.. i though 1st gens wieghed in at 4,200
thats still more then the max towing limit for ur truck
schmidlkofer 06-03-2007, 06:43 PM does not look like your towing the explorer...maybe the other way around....or go buy a golf cart to tow.....i bet the trailer will weigh about as much as your truck.

a trailer will prolly be 1500 pounds plus the 4200 of your explorer, 5700 thats almost double the towing limit of the truck.
sn0border88 06-03-2007, 09:22 PM I hauled the explorer again 1.5 hrs back a fourth to rausch creek, a ranger defiantly wouldn't make it on the hills surrounding any of the offroad parks ive been to.
95offroadx 06-03-2007, 10:17 PM great, now i have to mod this one to...oh well i was going to do that anyway. I dont think itll have a problem towing that in a month or so.
THe hills on 81 going to raush creek arent even that bad, I go that way to my cabin in potter county.

well good luck with that dont expect any sympothy when you break or blow up the ranger
95offroadx 06-03-2007, 11:30 PM since when do the ppl on this forum give any sympothy anyway.
buckshotmudder 06-03-2007, 11:49 PM nice truck- cant wait to see the mods come along

Im still not quite sure how you think towing something double the max tow rating of the truck is going to be fine?
sn0border88 06-04-2007, 07:33 AM hills on 81 arnt bad, but hills right around RC or rt 125/825 are horrible.
95offroadx 06-04-2007, 04:51 PM first mod: lightning style exhaust

It sounds great! Even added some power. Great way to spend $190
schmidlkofer 06-04-2007, 05:17 PM well all i have to say is good luck...even if the motor can pull the trailer up the hill im sure the gears or tranny or the hitch or tires or....shocks list goes on...they may go out.
95offroadx 06-04-2007, 05:39 PM key word is may, But they won't.
schmidlkofer 06-04-2007, 05:43 PM cant be to sure on your equipment.....thats like saying i may get in a car wreck you never know..
redranger4.0 06-04-2007, 06:06 PM key word is may, But they won't.
I still dont get how you think your truck is going to pull, 6000 pounds which is more then the automatic pulling limit and double your 5 speed limit, and not have problems. That tow rating isnt a suggested value, its The MAXIMUM you can safely tow. The reason I stress this is not for the trucks sake its for your safety and the safety of the people who are going to share the road with it.
sn0border88 06-04-2007, 06:12 PM key word is may, But they won't.
Thats scary. You do know its impossible to say that right?
schmidlkofer 06-04-2007, 06:14 PM k well do what you want you have been warned. good luck dont die.
Ranger379 06-04-2007, 06:17 PM i dont think anyone tows an explorer with anything less than an f-150, i know i from experience that over loading isnt a good idea. i hauled about 2500 lbs which was over my limit, and the tranny didnt like it one bit, let alone leafs/shocks. if you where to have an accident (do to failure of parts or if someone hits you, w/e) then your insurance company will see you where overloaded and then you are at fault and probably wont pay, theres alot of laws you break when u over load something....i wouldnt try it, but to each there own....good luck
Ranger379 06-04-2007, 06:41 PM o and on the topic of police and laws (just something to keep in mind) i know that i personally live in a small town and this rearly happens, but i seen it happen before. say a cop pulls you over while you towing over weight (be it a cop or DOT) and they decide to weigh you (yes the same people that weigh 18 wheelers DO weigh small pick ups and trailer) and you over weight. guess how bad youll get fined. if your trailer is over loaded or your truck is overloaded. they cops are gonna smack ya with some hefty fines, then they are gonna watch you unhook your trailer and watch you drive away hahah. i actaully seen this happen at work. DOT had some pickup (F-250) stopped and weighed him, the excavator was way to heavy for the trailer and truck. so they made him drop the trailer and leave. just another thing to keep in mind. its deffinately not hard to find something to stop a small trailer for, they always have a tail light or something out lol.
buckshotmudder 06-04-2007, 10:01 PM love the exhaust
schmidlkofer 06-05-2007, 04:00 PM good luck man you have been warned and told what could and probable will go wrong....oh and good luck with brakes even if your truck decides to hold the trailer before the tranny goes out....you will be replacing clutches like crazy.
Ranger379 06-05-2007, 04:53 PM ....you will be replacing clutches like crazy.
clutch, brakes and everything else that you are putting way too much stress on.... nice truck tho exhaust looks pretty good too...
o another idea, set your explorer up for towing as well, that way when the ranger decides it is done taking your punishment and craps out, you can just unload the X and put the ranger on the trailer, and continue the trip :salute:
schmidlkofer 06-05-2007, 05:13 PM haha yeah.....wouldl be funny seeing him trying to go up a paved hill....the ranger crap out. him have to unload the explorer and put the ranger on the trailer...and tow with the explorer.....but hey do what you want what do we know anyways....
Ranger379 06-05-2007, 05:15 PM in all seriosnesss, would it be possible to set up an explorer/ranger to tow that much, i see moutaineergreen pulls that capmer quite often. could u do it safley?
410Fortune 06-05-2007, 05:17 PM Listen you cannot tow an Explorer on a Flatbed with a Ranger, not even if the Ranger had a V8 under the hood. Not gonna happen
Your clutch would come through the floor on the first outing.
Seriously you have a really nice Ranger, I would love to see you mod it, but there is more to towing a flatbed and 4 door 4x4 suv then having a V6 and a mid size truck.
People here KNOW what they are TALKING about
schmidlkofer 06-05-2007, 05:46 PM hey if he wants to give it a try go for it. hope you are the only one on the streeet when you do so. get a bigger truck we are not trying to trash your truck...yes its nice but no it will not tow the large load.

I dont want it to come across we are bashing you or your truck, but its just not setup for what you want to do with it. But im with fortune, I would love to see you mod the truck. The exhuast looks great.
410Fortune 06-05-2007, 06:08 PM I towed a 74 Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 about 3 blocks a long time ago, to help get a friend out of traffic.
This was with my BII, 3 weeks later I replaced my first clutch

Im already looking for a hitch for the explorer. But after that it could tow the ranger easily. Dont worry guys the last thing i wanna do is hurt my new rig. Its not like if i cant tow it im going to continue doing so. You guys act like I just wanna destroy my truck. I love this truck, it already destroyed a 5.0 auto foxbody. Haha
schmidlkofer 06-05-2007, 10:49 PM it may be fast but not tough. well tough for a ranger...
95offroadx 11-09-2007, 11:32 PM havent really changed that much, but looks a 100x better then the "before" pictures in this thread

go there^^ for the specs a mods done.
as for towing this thing, i already towd my explorer with a tow dolly, 40 miles(round trip) to the tranny shop. Stoped good(just got new brakes a months ago). Had plenty of power to move. For 10 miles of it, i cruise on the highway 70mph no problems. Now this would probably be 1,000lbs lighter then when i go up to the mountains. But after the mods coming this winter. It will be no problem.
RFR2212 01-02-2008, 03:53 AM So i started reading the ranger forum tonight b/c i just got an 00 ranger as a DD opposed to my 1 ton dually diesel. Please, save everyone else the pain. Towing an explorer behind this is like drinking and driving. Someone will get hurt, probably not you, but someone else. If you're gonna tow that explorer, at least get a half ton. I towed my 2500lb trailer for my bronco empty behind our 06 with the 4.6 v8 and it sucked!
This is not enough truck to tow an explorer.
ReDLiNeZL 03-18-2008, 11:40 PM ill add to this, i have a 98 ranger with 3 73's and its a 4.0ohv motor with 5spd and it sucks to put a quad in my bed and haul it. and if i pull my lil 6'x6' dinky ass trailer empty it blows!
now my dad has an 2001 ranger 4.0sohc w/ automatic with the towing package and 4 10's... that pulls our car trailer with his 96 lifted ranger and it does decent but i wouldnt brag. now his truck trying to pull my explorer is a friggin scary ride. i used it just to pick up my expo when i bought it, and back and forth from shop to work on it... and the most i trailered it was bout 3 miles... SCARY!!!! :thumbdwn:
robbieo11 10-26-2008, 01:53 PM ok i don't post much where but from experience i had the ONLY way i would tow an explorer with a ranger is to have a 5th wheel or gooseneck out back. ELECTRIC brakes are required not an option. I pulled a explorer to a scrap yard loaded down and on a dolly with my ranger loaded with aluminum. Fastest i went was 25 mph the truck pushed my ass through 2 stop signs.
scaled gross at 12000 yes 12 thousand pounds these trucks are grocery getters not haulers and tow trucks

changed a bit... i dont tow with it or "try" to nemore.. its just turnin into a great build now, just wish i had more money
