View Full Version : PIAA...
rpenner54 08-29-2000, 04:00 PM Hey Matt I know you will reply to this since it has to do with PIAA.
Does PIAA make lights that are big? LOL
Okay now reply to this twice cause you will have a long answer and you will get above 1000 posts... :D
mattadams 08-29-2000, 04:06 PM yes they do :). 8 inchers, PIAA 80 Racing lights, I have em on mine :).
rpenner54 08-29-2000, 04:12 PM See now you have 1000 posts in very little time. :P
Those are nice and big lights by the way.
Sinjin 08-29-2000, 06:56 PM I had to chime in here......Hella 4000's are almost 10 inches in diameter.
mattadams 08-29-2000, 07:19 PM doesn't matter if there half as bright adn ten times harder to hook up :).
rpenner54 08-29-2000, 07:56 PM Matts right. He has more lights than you so he knows more then you.
mattadams 08-29-2000, 08:00 PM LOL thanks for the support Ryan! Naw, sinjin and I are gonna get together one of these days and have a friendly competition, I can only speak from personal beliefs now, Im ready to back it up though ;)
Matt, I just finished hooking up my PIAA 80s. MAN those things are bright! So far I've only seen them on during the day. I thought they were going to burn a hole in my garage door LOL. The hookup was super easy and I love that switch, very cool!
mattadams 08-29-2000, 08:28 PM right on Rick! Can't wait to see em on the Colors run!
Sinjin 08-29-2000, 10:38 PM PIAA....BLAH BLAH BLAH.....PIAA......BLAH BLAH BLAH
mattadams 08-29-2000, 10:54 PM LOL Hey Ryan started this one just as a joke to get me up to 1000 posts, I didn't think people would respond to it :). ALthough since your looking now... i've updated the site that has the pics of the PIAA's and the wiring and fuses and relays and all that fun stuff... check it out.

rock883 08-29-2000, 11:27 PM Hey Matt, I am thinking of relocating my lights up top on the roof rack. How hard was it to run the wires inside? DId you have to cut the wiring and run longer wires to go inside? Do I only need to run the wiring from the lights to that relay all the way to the top? Will the stud that comes with the lights work with the roof rack, or will I need to go get some longer bolts? Do you know what thread size the bolts with the lights are? Mine keep on coming loose because they didn't come with lock washers, so I am gonna get some lock nuts and put them on there. Thanks
T-Bone 08-29-2000, 11:40 PM Hey Matt-
While we got you on the subject...
I'm going to get four lights for the top of the truck (maybe two more in front), how do you have those wired in? Did you mount a small fuse block off of the main fuse block? Give me the low down, my man.

mattadams 08-29-2000, 11:51 PM T-Bone - follow the link I showed earlier. http://bart.is-s.com/~explorers/madams/PIAA/piaas.html
It answers almost all of your questions. If you run wires to the roof you WILL need to cut and use wire of similar/larger guage to the roof. I had to drill a few holes, once I drilled the first one it wasn't so painful to me :). The bolts I had were long enough to go through the stock roof rack, but you may want to push washers on both sides, otherwise it'll just bend the plastic. I'm thinking there 10mm but don't quote me on that?
T-Bone 08-30-2000, 12:03 AM Thanks for the link, buddy.
HOLY SMOKES! Damn, you have got some nice candle power going on there. Enough for a large sporting event or perhaps to light up a small, third world country! That pic of the light reflecting on your garage door looks like its burning a hole thru it.
I love it! OK, time to order that 130 AMP alternator.....:)

jason 08-30-2000, 12:25 AM Ok now I know why you call it Vegas nice setup
mattadams 08-30-2000, 09:07 AM Jason - thanks
Tbone - did that answer all your questions?
rpenner54 08-30-2000, 03:24 PM Dang I had no idea I would create this much of a stir over this! LOL
BTW I had hellas and currently they are sitting in a bucket in my closet. Thats about how good I think they are. They lasted me ohh...3 months of using them once in a great while before they just stoped working all-together. So I would recomend PIAA's. :) When I get my PIAA's someday when I have money I will have to tell you all how great they are. :)
J91FORD 08-30-2000, 04:11 PM Hey Matt does PIAA have a site of a catalog thanks
mattadams 08-30-2000, 04:25 PM http://www.piaa.com... go to piaa lamps. They don't sell online though, you have to go through a seperate dealer for that. You can use the dealer locator (also on piaa.com) to find a dealer in your area.
J91FORD 08-30-2000, 04:26 PM ok thanks
EB Bauer 08-30-2000, 05:01 PM How much are the 80's? What kinda price am I looking at for 6 of them?
rpenner54 08-30-2000, 06:07 PM You can get PIAA's at just about anywhere. Here is a link to 4 Wheel Parts' web site just for the 80's.
http://www.4wheelparts.com/product2.asp?imseqn=632&occlass=PIAA&cat=LIG
mattadams 08-30-2000, 06:38 PM EB - best advise is to shop around, but everywhere that sells lights, sells PIAA's, just about, unles they only sell cheap stuff :). if you look on PIAA's web site you can get exact dimensions of teh PIAA 80 XT's as well as PIAA 80 Racing's. The PIAA 80 XT are somewhere near 6 3/4-7 inches wide. The PIAA 80 Racing are 8 5/8 inches wide.

EB Bauer 08-30-2000, 06:50 PM I love the way "Vegas" looks! My only thing is that I would love to have twice as many lights as yours. Now that may or may not happen but it is a dream.
mattadams 08-30-2000, 07:04 PM I'd like to know where the heck you'll put em all! :)
Ray Lobato 08-30-2000, 08:43 PM Hey Scott,
I will have to say that the Pro 80XT's ARE NOT CHEAP.
I see that the price went up because 4wheelparts wholesalers
had them for $280.00 a set a couple of weeks ago. I got mine for $265.00 a set and bought 2 sets, one clear fogs and the other set was clear driving. You want quality you have to pay for it. ;)
Anyone that buys some PIAA lights. Don't forget to mention Matt Adams name on the warrenty card. Matt has always contributed to the raffles at the runs by giving away PIAA lights, it's only fair to help him by showing PIAA that he is helping sell their product. You can do this by mentioning his name or "Matt Adams PIAA sponsored Explorer" when you fill out the questionaire. :)
mattadams 08-30-2000, 09:05 PM Ray - thanks for the support man :). Like Ray said, you want quality you pay for it. Recently another member shared with me a letter he got from Pro Comp (this is true but I won't post the name cause he's trying to get Pro Comp sponsorship right now). The letter was sent to Pro-Comp inquiring as to why a set of 130 watt lights from Pro Comp cost $40, while a set of 120 watt lights from PIAA was $250 give or take. Here's the response from Pro-Comp:
Hi, our 130 watt light will produce the same kind of output as a PIAA, but the reason it is so much less expensive is because of the quality of the assembly itself. The PIAA light will last longer. You could replace ours a few times for the same price as the PIAAs. Thank you Jeff B.
Besides, who else will give you a lifetime warranty on lights (minus burnt out bulbs and of course rolling on top of the lights, etc.) :).
Brian1 08-30-2000, 10:16 PM I can't justify spending $200 bucks on 2 lights. I have bought 3 quality sets of lights for $9 each set. They have lasted for 2 years now and work fine for my needs. Those of you on CCR2000 will see my "quality" lights. Now don't get me wrong, I would gladly mount up some PIAA's if they were given to me but I wont spend $100 + for some lights.
just had to put in my $.02
mattadams 08-30-2000, 11:10 PM theres no problem with that Brian :). Lots of people think about em that way. Same goes with almost all automative parts. You can spend $75 on a tire or $200 on the same size tire. One's better. YOu can spend $20 on a shock absorber or you can spend $80 on a shock absorber, ones better. You can buy a quart of generic brand oil for 78 cents or spend $5 a quart and get Mobil 1. Anything wrong with cheaper stuff? Not at all, might not do as well, might not last as long, might break sooner, but it provides the same function.
'96explorereddiebauer 08-31-2000, 03:31 PM While we are on the subject on Piaa lights, what are your thoughts about the superwhite bulbs??? Are they really better or are they trying to rip us off?? There is a web site saying that the company is basically trying to rip you off. Here's the site:
http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/info/
I'm kinda confused right now, should I spend about $80 for a pair of superwhites or should I just keep using my factory bulbs?? Thanks for all your inputs.
mattadams 08-31-2000, 03:40 PM its up to you, but I've heard of different people that get different results. I noticed a difference but others have not noticed a big difference. I have seen that site you mentioned before and I honestly don't know where they get that data. They are using a "visible light meter" well everyone sees light differently, how does this "meter" know? I thought it was much whiter and somewhat brighter then the stock bulbs and I could see more of the road because it was whiter... but everyone gives different results. Best bet might be to buy it from some place that will let you return it if you don't like it. One thing also, this site is upset because PIAA's claim of 55w=85w is untrue. PIAA never says it puts out 85 watts, it says it put out the same amount of light as an 85 watt bulb, which I think it does...

rpenner54 08-31-2000, 03:41 PM Matt says they are better. I can't honestly tell. But I don't have them on my own vehicle and the only way for me to find out is to put them on there and just drive at night and see what it looks like.
Oh yeah that site is pretty crazy if you ask me. Specially if something IS brighter and they tell you it is not.
